VocationalEducationandTraininginSchools(VETiS)isagreatwayforyoungpeopletogetnationallyrecognisedqualifications.Over300studentsattendedthe2016TryVETDayinlateJulyallowingthemtosampletwooftheircoursepreferencesfor2017.
Studentsfrom14WimmeraandSouthernMalleeschools,stretchingfromEdenhopetoBirchipweretreatedtoafreeBBQlunchprovidedbytheWimmeraSouthernMalleeLLEN.
Thedayprovidedhands-onactivitiesandasnapshotofcoursesandcareerpathways.EighteencourseswereonofferatHorshamCollege,FederationUniversity,LongerenongCollege,SkillinvestandWimmeraHUB,rangingfromEngineeringtoSalonAssistant.Twonewcourseswillbeonofferin2017.CivilConstructionisbeingofferedbySkillinvestandBusinessbyWimmeraHUB.
VETClusterCoordinatorMelissaPowellcommented,“Thestudentshadafantasticday.Itwasallveryhands-onwhichreallyappealedtothem.Thereweresomeveryexcitedfacesattheendoftheday,whowerekeentosignupfortheirVETiSCoursefornextyear.”
FollowingonfromthesuccessfulCareersAdvisorscareersdayheldatGrainsInnovationPark,acareersdayforstudentsfromacrosstheregionwasheldonthe16thAugusttocoincidewith2016Scienceweek.Studentsparticipatedinhands-onactivitiesatGrainsInnovationParkaswellastourstoanumberoftheprivateresearchanddevelopmentfacilitiesinHorsham.ThetwodayswereacollaborationbetweenWDA,WSMLLEN,AgVicandtheVictorianWheatResearchFoundation.StudentsattendingweregivensnapshotsintoAgriculturalSciencerelatedcareersandexposedtoanumberofleadingresearchanddevelopmentfacilitiesbasedinHorsham.Futuresessionswillbeplannedtohighlightgeneralagriculturalpathwaysthatareavailable.

Let’sReadisanearlyyear’sliteracyprogramaimedatpromotingtheimportanceofreadingwithyoungchildrenfrombirthto5years.Let’sReadwasdevelopedbytheCentreforCommunityChildHealthattheRoyalChildren’sHospitalMelbourne.TheMurdochChildren’sResearchInstituteandTheSmithFamilyhavepartneredwithWimmeraSouthernMalleeLLENandlocalorganisationstoimplementLet’sReadacrossourregion.
Theprogramdeliverssupport,booksandresourcestofamiliesat4differentchildagepoints.Familiesreceivetheresourcesandsupportfortheirbabiesat4months,12months,18monthsand3½yearsfromMaternalandChildHealthNursesduringthechild’shealthcheck.
Wewouldliketoacknowledgeandthankschoolsandkeystakeholdersfortheirongoingsupportofthisprogram.Theprogramisfinanciallysupportedbyourlocalshirecouncils,WimmeraUnitingCare,HorshamSportsandCommunityClub,RupanyupandMinyipCommunityBank,HorshamApexClub15,EdenhopeandDistrictMemorialHospitalandFederationUniversity.Thesecontributionstowardsliteracydevelopmentaretremendouslyvaluableanddemonstrateourcommunity’scommitmenttosupportingourchildrenandourschools.
Minilibrarieshavebeen‘poppingup’allaroundtheWimmeraandSouthernMalleeregion.Thefirstpop-uplibrarieswereestablishedbytheWarracknabealWORDSProgramaspartofaninitiativetoimproveliteracyacrosstheregion.Sincethen,Let’sReadprogramsinHindmarshShire,WestWimmeraShireandHorshamRuralCityhavetakenupthechallengetomakebooksavailableinplaceswherechildrenandfamiliesgather.
Communitiesandschoolshaveworkedtogethertocollectsecond-handchildren’sbooksandrecyclethemintopop-uplibraries.Therearenow88pop-uplibrarytubswithmorethan3,400booksacrosstheregion.Familiescanborrowabook,keepitaslongastheylikeandreturnittoanypop-uplibrarytubintheregion.WethankWimmeraRegionalLibraryCorporationforthedonationofover300pre-lovedbooksforthepop-uplibraries.

Mentors,menteesandprogramcoordinatorsfromacrosstheregionareinvitedtojoininthefunwithagameoften-pinbowlingandalightlunch,followedbypresentations.Thepresentationsacknowledgethegreatworkdonebyindividualmentorsandschools.Thisyear,therearetwonewawards.TheinauguralCommunityChampionAwardwillbepresentedtooneofthebusinessesthatsupporttheMATESprogrambyallowingflexibleworkinghoursforstafftomentorstudentsduringschoolhours.TheSchoolMentoringTeamoftheYearAwardwillrecogniseschoolswhohaveastrongteamofvolunteerssupportingtheirprogramAwardswillbepresentedfor:
• MentoroftheYear• MentorSchoolteamoftheYear• MentorCommunityChampionBusinessoftheYear.

TheLibraryrunsRhymetime/Storytimesessionsacrossourbranches,eitherweeklyormonthly.Sessionsrunfromaround30-45minutes,andfeaturerhymes,songs,bookreadingsandactivitiessuitablefortheagegrouppresent.Everyoneiswelcome-socontactyourlocalbranchfordetails.
AnothersuccessfulWesternVictorianCareersExpowasheldinJunewithover2,000peopleattendingfromacrosstheWimmeraSouthernMalleeandbeyond.WSMLLENisaproudsponsorofthiskeyevent.Fromsmallbeginningsin1986,theWesternVictorianCareersExpohasgrowntobelargesteventofitskindheldincountryVictoria.
ExpoCoordinator,PaulineBarnesisretiringfromherpositionandanewCoordinator,AnnieMinternwilltakeoverthecoordinationoftheExpofor2017.MrChrisWalliswhowasafoundingmemberoftheCareersExpoCommittee,isalsoretiringfromhisroleafter30yearsofinvolvementwiththeExpo.

This program explores the Social Sciences and their impact in the real world. You willgain a deeper understanding of history, society and the global environment with anemphasis on the unique issues and context of Regional Victoria. Subjects are arrangedthematically to ensure you develop a broad set of transferable skills.
This program is flexible and convenient – you can study in-community or on-campusand full time is condensed to 2 days of classes per week. The small class sizes ensureyou have the chance to participate, debate and collaborate with your fellow studentsand the academics, business and community leaders who shape the course. You canchoose to learn on the road through optional travel subjects to Gallipoli or the outback.
At every stage of the course you will tackle real-life problems, often on-site at partnerorganizations, businesses and community groups. You will explore solutions to thecomplex public policy and business issues facing the leaders of our community.
Career opportunities
You will develop professional skills in critical thinking, problem solving, research, writing,presenting, teamwork and leadership. The practical experience embedded in the degreewill provide concrete experience in a range of industries. Opportunities are endless, but itmay lead to careers in the following fields:
