India one short of winning maximum golds in Commonwealth Games

• INDIAN COMMONWEALTH contingent is just one gold away to break their record of maximum golds ever won by India in the Commonwealth Games. India had won 30 golds in Commonwealth Games 2002, held in Manchester in England. However, India has already crossed the mark of maximum 69 medals which were also won in Manchester eight years back.

• India won their 13th gold in shooting as shooter Harpreet Singh won gold medal in Men's 25m centre fire pistol Individual event. In the Archery event Indian archers Deepika Kumari and Rahul Banerjee won golds in Women's recurve individual and Men's recurve individual event on Sunday October 10.

India launches IX round of oil, gas assets auction

The New Exploration licensing Policy round IX is being launched in the background of positive economic conditions, including revision of the administered price mechanism (APM) gas price and market determination for price of petrol,'' Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Murli Deora told reporters at the launch programme here. The 34 blocks, which include 15 re-cycled blocks, cover a sedimentary basin area of 88,807 sq. km. The deadline for making a bid for the blocks is March 18, 2011. The previous eight rounds of NELP in 235 blocks have fetched an investment of around $14 billion.

State govts fail to get cracking on cyber crime

• Even as hackers attacked more than 5,500 websites in the first six months this year, security agencies are groping in the dark to find a way to tackle the problem. Interestingly, though the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the nodal agency to deal with cybercrime in India, trains 30 police officials every year, it says most state police units are ill-equipped to deal with the problem.

White House to honour Intel researchers

• Researchers from three companies and a team from Intel are being awarded the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, the White House announced. Harry W Coover of Eastman Chemical in Kingsport, Tennessee; Helen M Free of Elkhart, Indiana-based Miles Laboratories, now part of Bayer; and Steven J Sasson of Eastman Kodak, in Rochester, New York, are being singled out for the honour. They are joined by a team of researchers from Santa Clara, California-based Intel — Federico Faggin, Marcian E Hoff Jr, and Stanley Mazor.

• “The extraordinary accomplishments of these scientists, engineers, and inventors are a testament to American industry and ingenuity,” President Barack Obama said in a statement. “Their achievements have redrawn the frontiers of human knowledge while enhancing American prosperity, and it is my tremendous pleasure to honour them for their important contributions.” The technology and innovation medal is the highest US award given to scientists, engineers and inventors, recognising contributions “to America’s competitiveness and quality of life” that help strengthen the US technological workforce, the White House said in a statement.
