Dear CIS Community,
We hope you had a wonderful Christmas with your families and friends, and wish you all a Happy New
Year!
I am delighted to inform you all that, following our
accreditation visit in Sept. 2017, we have now
received confirmation that Cebu International School
has been approved for re-accreditation by the
Council of International Schools (CIS), and the
Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).
I want to congratulate you all, as it is the school
community that makes the school what it is!
What is an International Accreditation?
The Council of International School is a leader in the field of school evaluation and accreditation
worldwide. They provide a unique international accreditation with a focus on high quality student
learning and global citizenship. The quality and rigor of a CIS International Accreditation is recognized
by Ministries and Departments of Education around the world as the demonstration of a school’s
commitment to high quality international education. Universities all over world recognize and value
the status of a CIS International Accreditation, as they have the assurance students who graduate
from CIS-accredited schools have received a high quality education and are ready for admission to
their institutions.
Western Association of Schools and Colleges is one of seven regional commissions made responsible
for the accreditation of roughly 3,000 of the nation’s colleges and universities by the US Department of
Education. Like CIS, a WASC accreditation is an indicator of a school that has satisfied all standards
set by the commission, and demonstrates that the Cebu International School High School Diploma is
acceptable as being equivalent to US HS Diplomas, and so provide CIS HS Diploma-holders smooth
access into US Universities if they so desire, as well as being recognized in many universities around the
world.
What do we do now?
The CIS International Accreditation is an evaluation process
that drives a school’s continuous improvement, through:
• rigorous evaluation against internationally-agreed
standards
• a blend of support and challenge, focused on a
school’s development
• a peer-based model that brings together international
educators from across the world of CIS-accredited
schools.
We now move to the Follow-up stage (ref. WASC Cycle of Quality diagram above), where over the
next few years, we implement the improvements to our program identified in the self-study and school
visit. This process is managed and monitored by the admin team, who ensure accountability by
periodically reporting progress to the Board of Trustees and school community, as well as CIS and
WASC.

Hello All,
Welcome back and Happy New Year!
One of the things I do each Christmas break is read teachers’ comments for report cards to
get a better idea about how each student is doing and to help unify comments. One of the
side benefits is that I get to hear directly from a number of students through their reflections
they have written about the prior quarter.
Many students across several middle and high school grade levels cited that in the new year,
and the new semester, that they want to get more sleep and saying they want to limit cell
usage at night and get to bed by 10-10:30 pm! What wonderful news! I hope you as parents
will help support your children in achieving their goals. This means taking a bit more action in
terms of limiting cell and device usage. This mean limiting or foregoing “academy” time. You
have heard me speak about, and write about, that sleep is the most important things students
can do after school. Cramming for an additional 3-5 hours of school does not help students
internalize learning from the day. More studying does not equal more learning after school.
We hope that in 2018, our students will come to school more rested!
Another point for the semester is the continuation of our active reporting process. Please read
through your child’s emails every second week highlighting their work from Day A/C classes
and then two weeks later, their learning from Day B/D days. We have had some lovely
responses from parents to students about their effort and growth!
Please remember to set aside Saturday January 20th from 7:20-12:30 pm for Sinulog Family
Day. This is a school day for all students and all parents are highly encouraged to join in the
fun! This year’s event promises to be more interactive and includes all family members in the
fun and food. Talk to our awesome PTA about how you can help! ([email protected])
A final announcement: On Thursday January 18 at 3:30 pm, there will be a Parent Information
Meeting in the library about the upcoming BeiMUN trip to Beijing running from March 14-18,
2018. Please plan on attending if your child is interested in participating in this year’s BeiMUN
conference.
Have a wonderful weekend with family and friends!

This week the Grade 4 students welcomed in a very special guest from the United States,
conservationist biologist Samuel W. Berg. In alignment with our new unit, Sharing the Planet,
Mr. Sam answered questions that the students had about how human's demand for energy
affects animal populations and habitats. He also shared information about his research with
wood turtles and shared his experiences.

Greetings parents, and Happy New Year!
We would like to welcome all the new families who have enrolled this semester. We hope you
settle in quickly and find CIS to be a welcoming community. As parents, you are already part
of the Parent Teacher Association here and we want to tell you from the beginning that we
value your ideas, experiences, traditions and concerns. If you would like to contact the PTA
Board officers, you can send an email to [email protected]. Watch this section of the
Newsflash for updates on PTA projects and meetings.
We will see you all on January 20 at Sinulog Family Day! Homeroom parents, please note that
this year the food will be ordered by the PTA Board using the homeroom funds designated for
this event. You DO NOT need to get the funds from the cashier. Dan Keller, our teacher liaison,
will handle the payment of the food vendors. All we ask from you is your help in decorating
tables on Friday afternoon, January 19, and help serving the food and/or manning snack
stations on the day of the event. Please send us an email if you are available to help in one
of those ways.
In order to save plastic, we encourage everyone to bring their own water bottles to use for
water and other drinks. We will also have drinks in glass bottles and paper cups.
Thank you for the many ways you serve.
Welcome back everyone!
