This year, the traditional update on North
Sea Exploration & Production is chaired by
Lennert Koch, Senior Analyst Europe with
Wood Mackenzie. The session offers an
overview of E&P activities of North Sea O&G
producers, puts results and expectations in a
historic perspective and discusses objectives
and results of the small fields policy. Hans
Ryckborst, Country Manager Netherlands of
Van Dyke Energy Company will talk about
how the Fallow Acreage Covenant has
been instrumental in Van Dyke Energy’s
development plans.
For the first time, Offshore Energy
looks at developments in East Africa.
The region holds great promise for natural
gas production. In little time, interest in
the region has grown as seismic data,
infrastructure and the political environment
are improving. Organized in cooperation
with the Netherlands Africa Business
Council, this session discusses East Africa’s
potential, business opportunities as well
as lessons learned by first movers.
A recurring conference theme is wave and
tidal energy. Chaired by Allard van Hoeken
of Bluewater Energy Services and with
contributions from Ferdinand Dees, Director
Offshore Operations of Mojo Maritime and
Niels Lange of SCHOTTEL the wave and tidal
session offers a quick scan of developments
in marine renewable energy, from advances
in turbines and generators to installation
vessels and operations.
Other technical sessions address innovations
in diver-less subsea installations and the
latest in shipbuilding and marine engineering
for the offshore industry.
Masterclasses:Beyondtechnicalskills
A new feature at Offshore Energy is
the Masterclass. The “Personal Effective
Engineers Masterclasses: Beyond technical
skills” are designed for students and young
professionals who want to develop their
skills and achieve their full potential. They
are offered the opportunity to learn from
Masters in the industry in an interactive
setting. The Masterclasses are organized in
cooperation with de Baak, the institute for
leadership and entrepreneurship.
This year, Offshore Energy also incorporates
the fourth edition of Offshore WIND
Installation and Maintenance. Sessions in
this full day conference program focus
on cost reductions, transport and access
systems and designing for low maintenance.
Confirmed speakers include Martin Degen
of Fred. Olsen United, Jan van der Tempel
of Ampelmann Operations and Sander
Lensink of the Energy Research Centre
of the Netherlands.

Economic mission to Texas: Oil & Gas remains very important, Worldwide opportunities for Dutch Suppliers
This economic mission was headed by
Prime Ministers Mark Rutte (NL) and Kris
Peeters (BE), along with Melanie Schultz
van Haegen, Minister of Infrastructure and
Environment (NL) and Hilde Crevits, Minister
for Mobility and Public Works (BE).
Commonly known as “The Lone Star State”,
Texas is a key economic partner for both
the Netherlands and Flanders because of
its strong ties with the Oil, Gas, chemical
and petrochemical clusters in and around
Rotterdam, Antwerp and Houston. The group
of delegates was divided into 4 parties:
Oil & Gas, Ports, Chemical and Smart Grids.
With 55 companies the Oil & Gas group
was by far the largest delegation.
The Oil & Gas delegation visited Shell,
ExxonMobil, BP, Total USA, Halliburton and
Schlumberger. Next to these company visits
there were several networking events and
presentations from General Electric Oil &
Gas and Price Waterhouse Coopers.
In separate sessions, the very clear message
that emerged from all major players was
that shale oil and gas is creating a different
playing field. The worldwide demand will
grow, creating dependency on fossil sources
for the supply of energy.
Renewable energy is estimated to have
a share of 5% max in the total energy mix.
The market leaders in the oil and gas
industry also made it very clear that they
are investing tremendous amounts of
money in R&D programs and innovations
to make operations and products as safe
and environmentally friendly as possible.
For Dutch suppliers in the oil and gas
industry, these messages were more of a
confirmation of what they see happening
around the world. They know there are
lots of opportunities in countries outside
Europe like Australia, the Middle East,
Indonesia, Singapore, Mozambique,
Russia, Norway, Brazil, and Mexico.
It was good to have the government leaders
of The Netherlands and Flanders present
in Houston. They could then hear directly
what the fact based situation is with regards
to international energy supply and demand –
from some of the world’s largest companies.
This information, combined with the
capabilities of the Dutch, should help us as
suppliers in approaching those countries
outside Europe together with high profile
government representatives in future Oil
& Gas related trade missions.
The price difference for gas in the United
States, compared to the price in Europe
or Japan for instance, is leading to extra
progress in several energy consuming
industries in de US. They are starting
to compete with countries like China,
generating economic spin-off in several
parts of the country as well as setbacks
in other parts of the world. Truly a game
changer that brings a lot of opportunities
for Dutch suppliers, and probably food
for thought for politicians.
Column by Sander Vergroesen
Next to the unique setting of two high profile delegations from two
neighboring countries visiting Houston together at the same time,
the received information itself made this mission a great success
and was for many of the participants an eye opener. From July 7th
to the 9th more than 100 companies from The Netherlands and
Flanders (Belgium) visited the Capital of the Oil and Gas industry:
Houston, Texas. SanderVergroesenManaging Director
at IRO (The Association of Dutch Suppliers
in the Oil and Gas Industry)

The heavy-lift jack-up vessel INNOVATION
is operating with great success in the
North Sea wind farm “Global Tech I”.
It was developed for multifunctional
offshore operations. Apart from working
around offshore wind farms, this vessel
can also be deployed to optimum effect
in the offshore gas and oil sector.
The highly sophisticated INNOVATION,
built in the CRIST shipyard in Poland,
was commissioned in August 2012.
An important contribution is made by the
four SCHOTTEL Rudder propellers, type SRP
3030 (3,500 kW each), and three SCHOTTEL
transverse thrusters, type STT 3030
(2,800 kW each). They move the vessel
at a speed of up to 12 knots and enable
dynamic positioning in accordance with
DP 2 requirements.
With a high-performance 1,500 ton crane
and a loading capacity of up to 8,000 tons,
the vessel enables the safe loading and
installation of wind turbines with a rated
capacity of 6 MW and more at heights
exceeding 120 m, as well as heavy
foundations at water depths up to 65 m.
Cabins for up to 100 persons, extendable
up to 180 persons, provide the living space
required for a working ship of this size.
With this all-in-one solution – from loading
to transport to installation – the 147.50 m
long and 42 m wide INNOVATION is capable
of operating flexibly and independently.

Since I joined DylanGroup as CEO, just over two years ago,
it has been my privilege to be part of an organization that
has come through the past years alive and kicking, and ready
for the future. Our employees are justifiably proud of the
products they manufacture and supply. Every day, they use
their specialist knowledge of sourcing, project management,
logistics and stock planning on behalf of our customers.
Together they deliver the results.
There is future in the offshore business too. In previous
companies, I have experienced the challenges of the steel
market and the offshore industry. DylanGroup has always
been active within the offshore and energy business, as one
of the major industries using steel piping. In the North Sea,
but also far beyond, in Singapore and Brasil.
One of our key values is transparency. In other words,
together with our customers, in an atmosphere of openness
and honesty, identifying a permanent or temporary solution.
Our attitude in such activities is extremely flexible. That is the
only way to truly assist a customer. He is looking for a partner
capable of supplying the total package, as well as offering
the necessary specialist advice and expert support. In other
words, “one-stop shopping” at the highest level.
I am looking forward to meeting new contacts and welcoming
them with a positive outlook, to finding new opportunities and
solutions for growth in the offshore and energy industries.”

Advancedknowledgeisthereforeprogressivelyimportant
inourwork.Itisreflectedinourprojects.
In 2012 we were involved in the construction of a pipe layer,
a drilling platform, an FPSO, a platform for wind energy and
a semi-submersible transport ship. Diverse projects that kept
us busy with engineering, installation, system integration
and maintenance. Currently, we are focusing mainly on oil,
and gas and wind energy, with an emphasis on maintenance,
repair, conversion and new construction. We distinguish
ourselves from our competitors by combining high performance
capacity with far-reaching expertise.
Much of our expertise can be found in-house. It’s just a
matter of singling it out. At Croon, we pay a lot of attention
to the knowledge sharing between the four business groups
operating within Croon (buildings, industry, infrastructure
and marine & offshore). We also invest in the knowledge
of our people. Last year alone we logged more than 66,000
hours of training for over 2,000 employees.
Looking out for our people is part of our corporate culture.
Safety could well be our highest priority. For contracts abroad
we always add security into our price. We are still fairly
unique in this, but I suspect that just about everyone will be
doing things this way in a few years. In the Marine & Offshore
world Corporate Social Responsibility is also slowly becoming
more important. Oil companies are making increasing demands
on their suppliers and at trade shows, like the Offshore Energy
2013, this subject is sure to get attention. This puts Croon in a
good position. Corporate Social Responsibility is in our DNA.
In a market where the hourly rates are severely stressed,
companies are taking on projects at too low a price and
competition is increasing, we remain relatively steady.
The future for Croon is looking very positive indeed.”
