An American Indian Standing Rock Sioux Tribe succeeded Tuesday in getting U.S. District Judge James Boasberg to temporarily stop construction on some, but not all, of the $3.8 billion Dakota Access Pipeline oil pipeline which will cross North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa and Illinois.

He also said he will rule by the end of Friday on the Tribe's challenge of federal regulators' decision to grant permits to the Dallas, Texas-based operators of the Dakota Access Pipeline, A weekend confrontation between protesters and construction workers near Lake Oahe prompted the tribe to ask Sunday for a temporary stop of construction. Four private security guards and two guard dogs received medical treatment, officials said, while a tribal spokesman noted that six people — including a child — were bitten by the dogs and at least 30 people were

pepper-sprayed. Dakota Access attorney Bill Leone said during Tuesday's hearing that if it weren't for the stoppages, the section in question would be finished by the end of this week.

The Camp of the Sacred Stones and Red Warrior Camp, currently defending against the Dakota Pipeline, are calling on allies across the world to take action from September 3rd to 17th on the pipeline companies and financial institutions working to build the pipeline in ND.

In Asheville there will be a meeting Friday the 9th at 3pm at Pritchard Park to rally and march to TD Bank.

Headline 3:

NC News: The Macon County school board has decided to end a corporal punishment policy, making paddling a thing of the past. This policy change leaves Graham County as the only Western North Carolina county to still use paddling in high schools and middle schools. Paddlings were not a frequently used punishment in Macon, seeing only 14 uses in the 2015-2016 school year.

Macon County Superintendent Chris Baldwin said that paddling was used (quote) “so minimally” that the board felt it was no longer needed, adding (quote) “It’s just not something that our schools are comfortable doing anymore.”

Macon County’s change shows a progressive trend in corporal punishment in schools. A study by NC Child reported corporal punishment being used 71 times among three counties; down from 891 times in 17 counties in the 2010-2011 school year.

Headline 2:

Despite the July court decision to overrule NC Voter Suppression Laws, Election boards in 23 of the state’s 100 counties have reduced early voting hours, in some cases to a small fraction of what they were in the 2012 presidential election, according to an analysis by The Raleigh News & Observer. Boards in nine counties voted to eliminate Sunday voting. Both early voting and Sunday voting are used disproportionately by black voters.

While boards in 70 counties voted to expand the number of early-voting hours, the counties that moved to cut hours back account for half of the state’s registered voters. In heavily Democratic Mecklenburg County — the state’s largest, with about one million residents — Republican board members voted to eliminate 238 early-voting hours despite near-unanimous appeals from the public to add more. In 2012, African-Americans in Mecklenburg used early voting at a far higher rate than whites.

In Local News:

Headline 1: On Monday night, Cherrell Mooney posted a nine-second phone video she captured of 16-year-old Kacee Fleming in an altercation with Officer Shalin Oza on her Facebook page. Witnesses say the officer used excessive force. The Asheville Police Department released a statement saying, (quote) “The nine second video is only a small portion of a much longer

incident. The Asheville Police Department is in the process of conducting a full administrative investigation that will review all evidence, including the video circulating on social media and body worn camera footage, in our review.”(end quote) Despite requests, the APD has not released the body cam footage from Monday night. On Tuesday evening APD held a moderated discussion with community members at the First Congregation United Church of Christ. Headline 2:

Chad Campbell, 46, of West Asheville and a former professional cyclist, remains in the intensive care unit at Mission Hospital after being struck by a pickup truck on Newfound Road, off Leicester Highway. According to Trooper Brandon Miller of the N.C. State Highway Patrol, a pickup truck driven by Jerry Plemmons, who lives on Newfound Road, hit Campbell at a speed of 55 mph. Campbell was hit from behind on a slight curve, Miller said. Miller charged Plemmons with reckless driving, which requires a mandatory court hearing. Campbell’s injuries are very serious.

Headline 3:

It was announced today that Donald Trump will host a public rally at Asheville's U.S. Cellular Center on Monday Sept. 12. Doors open at 3 p.m., and the event begins at 6 p.m. Tickets are available free of charge on Mr. Trump’s campaign website and there are already plans for local protests.
