Attendance for 23rd March to 2nd April 2015

28 April 2015

Hello everyone and welcome back, a particularly warm welcome to new families who have joined our school community.

Once again the term has commenced racing with the marking of the 100th anniversary since the

landing at ANZAC Cove on the Gallipoli Peninsular in Turkey of Australian and New Zealand troops. One hundred students participated in the Combined Schools ANZAC service on Friday 24 April followed by five students representing the school at the official service Saturday 25 April.

I trust you were able to access and participate in some of the events organised by the City providing opportunity to pay our respects and remember the sacrifices made by the men and women who lay down their lives for their country.

As you are all no doubt aware the building in progress on the bottom oval of the school is the Lockyer Child and Parent Centre. It is very exciting to see they have laid the concrete pad and the services are now being put in.

Although the building is not complete we have had the Child Parent Centre (CPC) in operation since last year. The CPC is currently housed in Room 25 – the transportable building as you enter the school gate from South Coast Highway. Sarah Pegden is the Coordinator and she has a number of programs running including a Play Group. Sarah offers a variety of services inclusive of a wealth of information supporting families of children 0-8 years. If you have any questions, require support, information or just to meet other parents this is the place to go. A one-stop shop for all your parenting needs; pop in and meet Sarah, she is available every morning Monday to Friday. Additionally Sarah puts a flag out to indicate she is in the centre; so flag up, Sarah is home.

ATTENDANCE All absences from school must be explained. You can do so by email to [email protected], in per-son, by phone, by text to 0418 950 867 or with a note. The Department of Education states that students must at-tend school on a regular basis to gain the maximum benefit from schooling and optimise their life opportunities. Research has established that every day counts and that there is no safe level of absence from school.

Being half an hour late to school each day from Year 1 to Year 10 is approximately equivalent to missing one year of schooling.

A student who is absent 1 day a fortnight will, by Year 9, have missed 1 year of schooling.

NEWSLETTER QUIZ Q: What room number is the Child and Parent Centre? A: _____________________________________________________ Name _________________________________________________________ Room ____________________________________

MANAGING STUDENT BEHAVIOUR

The key to this approach is that the child is given a choice at each step to follow directions or face increased consequences. Students making GOOD CHOICES are acknowledged for their efforts. For students making POOR CHOICES the following consequences apply ~

STEP 1 Student refuses to follow directions. Verbal warning.

STEP 2 Student still refuses to follow directions-In-class consequence e.g. Time Out

STEP 3 Student still refuses to follow directions-Out-of-class consequence e.g. Buddy Class.

STEP 4 Student still refuses to follow directions- RED CARD is sent to the office. Parents will be requested to attend school.

SUSPENSION Students will be immediately suspended for verbal abuse of staff and/or violence towards staff or students.

RE-ENTRY FOLLOWING SUSPENSION

Students returning from suspension must be accompanied by an adult and will attend the Intervention Centre (Room 20) where an Individual Behaviour Management Plan will be developed and implemented.

WHAT IS BULLYING? Bullying is when a student or group keep picking on another student. They try to hurt them physically or emotionally. The behaviour is deliberate and repeated.

A fight or disagreement between equal students is not bullying.

HOW TO STOP BULLYING

Tell an adult, it is not dobbing to ask for help. Both victim and those bullying will be counselled and supported.

Do not be a by-stander; if you witness bullying try to stop it or report it.

IF YOU ARE BULLYING

Step 1: Warning Step 2: In school isolation and counselling at recess and lunch, parents will be notified Step 3: For continued breaches students will be suspended.
