[Glenunga news] Stella Naylor IB DUX 2010 Principal’s Report Start of Year Events Term 1 is always a very busy time beginning with students returning to school, the Year 8 camps at Mylor, the Swimming Carnival, Senior School Orientation, the Dux of School Celebration Assembly and the Year 8 Parent Information Night attended by over 300 people. Excellent planning and leadership from staff combined with our students’ exemplary behaviour meant that these events, which are an important part of our school’s culture, were very successful. Kylie Bishop Governing Council chair represented the school community at our Dux of School ceremony where Year 8 – 11 students who were Dux of their year level were presented to the school. . The SACE Dux Dylan Peukert (ATAR of 99.5) and the IB Dux Stella Naylor (ATAR of 99.7) represented the pinnacle of excellence at the event.     Principal’s Report

    Start of Year Events Term 1 is always a very busy time beginning with students returning to school, the Year 8 camps at Mylor, the Swimming Carnival, Senior School Orientation, the Dux of School Celebration Assembly and the Year 8 Parent Information Night attended by over 300 people.     Principal’s Report continued

    explicit focus on students, their learning outcomes and their wellbeing. On Monday 21 Feb GIHS hosted the IB Diploma Merit Ceremony on behalf of the seven schools that offer IB Diploma (Saints, PAC, Mercedes, Concordia, Woodcroft, Walford, and Pembroke). Jeremy Cogan Deputy Principal was MC and our Minister was the guest speaker. Kylie Bishop represented the Governing Council at this prestigious event. Our colleague schools were very complimentary about our management of the ceremony, which went off without a hitch. IT Update Over the holidays our IT Team has rebuilt our network system to address the issues that have arisen over the past decade. They worked 24/7 over 6-8 weeks to achieve the outcome we needed. Their timeline was compromised by a key air conditioning unit breaking down on New Year’s Eve and by a slow delivery of parts that needed to be sourced from Europe for our blade servers. This massive and ambitious undertaking will be completed on March 4. Unfortunately our Digital Education Revolution (DER) wireless network expansion is not yet working reliably. Our network rebuild has fixed some of the issues, but there are still challenges with the placement and load switching of the Wireless Access Points (WAPs). This is frustrating both students and staff. We are meeting with DECS and the suppliers Dimension Data to resolve the problems. We are awaiting the resolution of the wireless issues before we can bring Ausportal on line. This facility will enable senior students to bring their laptops to school and to be able to log on without having the school’s image on their machine. The trial will initially begin with Year 12 and then will involve Year 11 and 10.

    Laptop Learning Program Year 9 students are underway with their One to One Laptop Learning Program. After an initial delay, the Year 8 computers have now arrived. Our IT Team will image the machines and then we will invite the families into school for a handover. We now need to follow up with new students who missed out on the original order. In order to keep their laptops safe at school while not in use Year 8 and 9 students need a Lockwood 120/40 lock for their locker and a spare key given to their Home Group teacher. Last year when we were taking orders for the new Year 8 computers a number of families asked whether they could order a laptop for students in other year levels. At that stage we were not able to accommodate this request. Now we are able to offer families the opportunity to be part of a bulk purchase of laptops at DER prices. Information about this offer will be released in the next fortnight. Uniforms We have been asking our female students to wear their skirts and shorts at an appropriate length for a work environment. Most students complied on their return to school; some students ‘tested the waters’ but were quickly back on track; and a small handful still need to be counselled about this issue. There are also other aspects that require attention eg belts of summer dresses tied rather than buttoned, obvious eye liner/makeup, non-visible socks, and shoes untied or unbuckled. There is also the challenge of jewellery and nail polish. We have been delighted that feedback from staff and visitors indicates that our students are looking smarter this year. Staff continue to work to eliminate the need to have conversations with students about these issues. Staffing Changes Ian Hughes has joined our school community as our new Christian Pastoral Support Worker and we are pleased to have him with us.     Senior School Report

    Senior School Orientation Day On February 14 Year 11 and 12 students attended an Orientation Day to prepare them for the demands of senior study. The focus for the day was on developing successful study skills and positive student well being. Year 11 students attended sessions on Pathways through Senior School and SACE and IB Diploma requirements. They also attended a session with a guest speaker from SAPOL who talked about the importance of safe driving habits. The emphasis for our Year 12 students has been to ensure that they have well developed study skills and plan effectively to meet the challenges of Year 12. They attended two sessions presented by Dr Kirrilie Smout, a prominent educational psychologist who spoke about practical strategies for successful study and how to remain positive and healthy under the pressure of study. Students were also asked to develop their own Attributes of Successful Students and to commit to implementing these this year. Year 12 Student Advisers will be meeting with students this term to provide them with support and guidance. Year 12 students are required to provide evidence to their Student Advisers at these meetings that they are progressing well in their studies. Celebration Assembly The Celebration Assembly where we highlight outstanding student achievement from the previous year was held on Thursday 24 February. At this assembly House Captains were presented to the school and were awarded their official badges. Awards for the Best All Rounders in Years 8 to 11 (2010) were presented by Year Level Leaders. These awards

    go to students who have contributed positively to school life and have participated in many of the activities that the school has to offer. They must also perform well in their academic studies. Congratulations to the winners of these awards:

    The Dux of each Year Level was also presented at this assembly. Students who win this award have achieved the highest academic results in their year level in 2010. In some cases we had to give two awards because the students achieved identical results. Congratulations to the following students:

He scored a 20 for Geography, 19s for Maths Specialist, Physics and Chemistry. He also received an 18 for Maths Studies. He achieved an Australian Tertiary Admissions Score or an ATAR of 99.7. The Dux of Year 12 IB was Stella Naylor. Stella achieved perfect scores in every subject: German, Maths, Biology, Chemistry, English and Geography. She achieved a perfect 45 out of 45 points. This puts her in the top 1% of students worldwide and gives her a perfect ATAR of 99.95. Congratulations to all these students and a special thank you to Harry Postema and Tim Jones (assisted by a crew of enthusiastic students) that were responsible for much of the setting up of the assembly. The music performances by Nick Vasiliou and Ella Smith were outstanding. Thank you also to Amanda Walsh (Assistant Principal) and Heather Makris (Assistant Principal) for their work in organising the assembly.

    Prefect Report

    This is the first Prefect report for 2011! Just a quick update on what we’ve accomplished so far and what we intend to start developing. So far this year we have established the Year 12 kitchen and implemented a cleaning roster system which rewards IB students with their much desired CAS hours while keeping the kitchen clean and hygienic! This is our first accomplishment for the year, and was driven by the high demand for kitchen access by the Year 12 students. This demonstrates how the students can utilise us as a medium for getting things done in the way that they want them to be done! We encourage all students to express their opinions on any issues that they have regarding the school.

    We are approachable and friendly so students shouldn’t hesitate to let us know. Also, we encourage them to add the Glenunga Voice Facebook page, which they can use to get updates on our work as prefects, and also express their opinions! Currently, the prefects are having regular meetings regarding the development of the school and our leadership skills and will be working with the new Assistant Principal, Ms Walsh, to redevelop and improve the leadership system at Glenunga. We hope you all enjoyed your holidays and have had a great start to the year.

    IB Diploma Report

    I am very happy to report that our results in 2010 were very strong and maintained our long term average score of 34 despite a very significant increase in student numbers from 34 to 52.

    The top scorer was Stella Naylor with 45. This is a rare and outstanding achievement so well done to Stella and her teachers. I am also really proud of the fact that we had a record ten students score 40 or more and overall Glenunga students scored 52 merits for their individual subjects. This is 50% of the cohort. A merit equates to a high A grade. The average ATAR score for our 2010 graduates was 95. At the end of 2010 IB teachers spent some time talking together about our organization of the IB program. We know that we have a model that works, but there are always things that can be improved. We have revised our calendar of due dates for student work. This calendar is really important because we know that if students are well organized then they can achieve a higher standard more consistently and with less stress. Students need help from their parents and teachers if they are to achieve their potential. One important change for 2011 is the timeline for the Extended Essay. We have brought this forward so that students should already have organized a supervisor and they should be working on this important task now. As a school we have made a big commitment to Moodle. This is a modular online learning environment. We are working towards all subjects having a Moodle subject page. Some subjects are very well advanced on this and others are in development. I have created a simple page which can be located on the GIHS moodle menu and this can be reached from the school website www.gihs.sa.edu.au It is titled IB Diploma Home Page. This page contains a number of key documents that parents sometimes ask to see. It has a copy of the calendar as well as information on: Creativity, Action, Service; Extended Essay; and Theory of Knowledge. I need to draw your attention also to the General Regulations for Students

    and Their Legal Guardians document which is a formal statement of rules and regulations for the IB. All students need to have read this document. This Moodle page has an enrolment key that you need to use to register. The key is ibagihs. You will not find any teaching materials on this Moodle page. These materials are located on the various subject Moodles. One of the important parts of the IB Diploma is the Creativity, Action, Service or CAS Program. All of the Year 12 students are well under way on this program which runs through both Year 11 and Year 12. At the end of each year I hold a pre IB workshop in December. At this workshop I spend time introducing CAS and the management program that we use called managebac. Some Year 11 students have started recording CAS as they are required to do. A significant number have not. They need to start now. If students don’t know how they need to see me personally. At the moment I am managing CAS. We hope to appoint a CAS Coordinator during term one.

    IB Diploma Award Ceremony

    Each year the International Baccalaureate Schools in Adelaide hold a ceremony in the Adelaide Town Hall to celebrate the achievements of students who win Merit Certificates. The other IB schools are Mercedes College, Pembroke School, Prince Alfred College, Saint Peter’s College, Walford Anglican School and Woodcroft College. All students who achieve the maximum score of seven in one or more of their subjects are awarded a Certificate of Merit. Students who achieve an aggregate score of 40 or more out of 45 are awarded a Certificate of Distinction. Glenunga students were very well represented. Twenty six of our 52 students achieved at least one Merit in 2010. Ten of our students achieved a Certificate of Distinction. This ceremony is a very important celebration of achievement. The Minister for Education, Hon Jay Weatherill gave the keynote Diana Medlin Memorial Lecture. The organization of the ceremony was a group effort and it was done in a very professional way. Special thanks to Helen Redmond and Jodie Brogan. Two senior IB students Matthew Chu (piano) and Anna Hartley (flute) gave superb musical performances. Thanks to you both. Overall the evening was an outstanding success and I would like to thank all of the Glenunga staff who made it possible.

    Student Life Report Student Life activities and clubs are an integral part of Glenunga. Involvement greatly contributes to students’ positive experiences and a sense of belonging at the school. We encourage all of our students to participate in as many of the activities as they would like. Here is a list of clubs that have started already, with more to follow shortly.     Swimming Carnival Report

    On Monday 14 February Year 8, 9 and 10 students competed in the annual Swimming Carnival at Adelaide Aquatic Centre. Over 600 students were present to compete and support their houses (Air, Earth, Fire and Water) in very competitive and fun events. Swimming races (freestyle, breaststroke and backstroke) were keenly contested with points contributing towards Year Level Champions. The following students were outstanding. Yr 8 Champions: Lizzy Neate (Earth) and Vlad Sutorin (Water) Runners Up: Olga Kouchinsky (Water) and Joshua Yates (Fire) Yr 9 Champions: Sofia Valero (Water) and Conor Fletcher (Fire) Runners Up: Emily Bliss (Air) and Stevan Blagojevic (Water) Yr 10 Champions: Caludia Prosdocimo (Air) and Boris Blagojevic (Fire) Runners Up: Rhona Hamilton (Fire) and Joshua Collins (Air) The House trophy was also a very close contest with only four points separating first from second. Fire House was declared the champions followed very closely by Air, Water and Earth. The Physical Education Staff also introduced two new novelty events (Slam Dunk and Rope Rescue) which all students enjoyed. We are looking forward to introducing more events next year to further enhance the opportunities for students to compete. Thank you to the Physical Education staff for all their guidance and assistance. Thank you to all the other staff members who assisted in a variety of capacities on the day. Every one’s efforts were much appreciated. Congratulations to all students and House Leaders who were involved with the Swimming Carnival. Your behavior was excellent throughout the day. A school team has been selected to compete at the Secondary Schools Swimming Carnival on Thursday 3 March. Best of luck everybody! Looking forward to a bigger and better Swimming Carnival in 2012.

    LOTE News

    SUCCESS IN SCHÜTZENFEST GERMAN LANGUAGE COMPETITION Two students have excelled in the 2011 SA Schützenfest German Language Competition. The topic of the competition was Getting to Know Thüringen and students were required to design a poster dealing with this theme. Year 8 students were required to design a poster depicting a famous person from Thüringen and Year 9 students had to design a poster advertising a city in Thüringen. The criteria for judging the entries included content, accuracy of German language, level of difficulty of language and presentation. In the Year 8 Section Sherilyn Wang gained second prize and in the Year 9 Section Caoimhe Halpin-Bassham gained third prize. The entries from these students were outstanding, displaying creativity, originality, excellent knowledge of the topic and excellent German language skills. The students will be presented with their prizes at a special ceremony held at the German Club of SA on Saturday 5 March. I would like to congratulate these students in particular as well as all the other students who entered the competition. Gratuliere!

    Due to the demand shown by some techie orientated students, we are going to

    running the CISCO IT Essentials course as a Student Life activity on Thursday afternoons in Line 0, from 15:30 to

    17:10.

    CISCO is the leading company in the world for networking equipment – much of which manages the internet - and they

    provide an industry recognised standard in IT training.

    This course will give the participants a Stage 1 VET qualification and 15 SACE

    Units.

    The cost of the course will be $264.00 which will cover materials and fees.

    The course trains students in both the

    Hardware and Software configuration of a Microsoft PC and incorporates both hands

    on practical tasks and on line learning material too.

    G’day, Salut, Hallo, Cześć, Γιάσου, ا ,Hola, 你好, привет, 안녕하세요 ,������ ,مرحبสว สด ั ี, こんにちは!

    Firstly, introductions are in order… I’m Ian Hughes, the new CPS Worker (Christian Pastoral Support Worker). Secondly, apologies if the spelling or grammar is not correct for the non-English versions of ‘Hello’. Unfortunately, I do not speak many of these languages, but who knows, with a

    school like Glenunga, it may not be such a pipeline dream.

    In case you are new to the school the role of the CPS Worker within the school community is to pastorally support students, staff and families, and to be a resource and referral role to different

    services within the school and larger community.

    This term I am involved in running several student-based and run groups such as the World Vision group, aimed at growing global cultural, social and

    economic awareness encouraging the students to keep their eyes focused on our school value of

    international thinking. I also help co-ordinate and run the Christian group called Vertical Self.

    I am available throughout the week for anyone in the school community from the staff and students to the

    parents for a chat about anything even if you just need a place to safely ‘vent’ (venting is, I think, a non-technical word that I use to portray the action and

    feeling of getting those pressures and stresses off your chest).

    It has been a blast so far this term getting to know all the students. Over 1300 students names to remember though...hmm, anyone got any suggestions for memory retention please feel free to

    forward any good ideas to me at the school email address; [email protected]

    Oh, and I almost forgot the most important thing…I’m a nice and friendly guy, so don’t hesitate or be afraid to give us a call either at school on (08) 8379 5629 and ask to speak to Ian Hughes.

    I’m looking forward to seeing the students grow in their academic and social lives throughout both this term/year and hopefully in the years to come.

    The Year Eight Camps again proved to be a remarkable success. The venue was the Mylor Baptist Camp and included a mixture of challenging, fun and competitive activities. With Year 8’s, 11’s and some daring teachers immersed in the activities it was a real recipe for success.

    Students within and across home groups met and formed friendships seamlessly. The high ropes again proved to be the highlight with some students taking to them as if they were born on them

    and others showing tremendous courage and growth in front of our very eyes. With every person present showing full support and genuine encouragement it was truly inspiring to witness.

    The Peer Support Leaders capped off each day by leading the evening activities with great gusto, receiving admiration from the teachers present. Well done to all involved.

    Jane  Norman  was  an  IB  student  at  GIHS finishing  in  2006  &  then  attended  The Australian  National  University  in  Canberra studying  combined  Law/Arts  (Languages).  She has  just  graduated  at  the  end  of  2010.  All graduates  were  asked  if  they  would  like  to nominate  a  secondary  teacher  who  had  a strong influence over the direction their life has subsequently  taken.  If students decide  there  is such  a  person  then  they  can  nominate  them and  then  they  write  a  submission  explaining why.  Once  all  the  submissions  are  written,  a university  committee  considers  them  and selects the  five that they consider are the best ones  to  receive  an  award.  The  award  is  the national  excellence  in  Secondary  Teaching Award as per the photographed certificate.   

    The  nominated  teachers  are  asked  to  attend the  relevant  student’s graduation ceremony  to see them graduate. As part of the process, the teachers are also presented at the ceremony to the  Vice  Chancellor  on  stage  in  front  of  the audience &  a  part  of  the  citation  is  read  out.  The teachers are dressed in the colours of their own university degrees & wear mortar boards (which  I  think  is  a  peculiarity  of  all  ANU graduates  as  I  think  that  head‐gear  is  usually reserved  for  higher  level  degrees  in  other universities).  

    As  part  of  the  presentation  the  teachers  are given the framed certificate, a copy of the part of  the  citation  that  was  read  out  &  have  an official  photo  taken  with  their  nominating student. Also, the teacher and the school where they  taught  the  student  both  receive  prize money. The university pays for return flights to Canberra  &  accommodation  to  attend  the ceremony.  The  whole  process  was  quite overwhelming  and  a  huge  honour  to  be  told you have  influenced a person’s  life  to  such an extent.  

    Jane is currently working as a research assistant in the ANU Centre for Law and Economics ‐ ANU Officer  Grade  5/6  (Research),  Executive  ‐ Administration.  She  will  be  commencing  her Graduate  Diploma  of  Legal  Practice  in March, which are the qualifications required to practice law.   

    She  is  currently applying  for  the  JET  (Japanese Exchange and Teaching) Programme, run by the Japanese  Embassy which  if  successful, will  see her working in Japan for a year, before applying for  a  Judge's  Associate‐ship,  to  enable  her  to practise law in the private sector.  

    At ANU,  Jane  came  top of one of her German courses and two of her law courses ‐ succession law and family law.

    Term one has seen strong interest shown by students by way of participation in the summer sport program.     For parents new to the school please be advised the Sports Department has its own detailed page on the GIHS website. This is the best way to access up to date information on the sports program (such as expressions of interest for knockout sport & seasonal competitions, change to game time, venues for teams etc).

    Term 2/3 Knockout Sport

    The Term 2/3 signup for knockout sport (high school equivalent of SAPSASA) is now open. To register interest for any of the sports available students must sign up in the red folder outside the Sports Office advising of their name and home group. From there tryouts will be held to pick the strongest team possible. There will be more knockout sports available for participation within the term 3/4 period. The Term 2/3 knockout sports are:

    Ultimate Frisbee Competition

    Ultimate Frisbee is a developing sport within Australia. It has similar rules to Touch Football where one team must run (in this case) a Frisbee over an opponent's goal line. Several coaching clinics will be run by the SAFDA (South Australian Flying Disc Association) on Wednesday afternoons starting 23 February to 13 April from 4:30pm to 6:30pm.

    Andre Ortiz - Athletics

    Special congratulations go out to Year 11 student Andre Ortiz who has gained selection for South Australia at the National Junior Athletics Championships. The event will be held at Sydney Olympic Stadium from 10 to 14 March. Andre gained selection for the team by winning the U18 boys 100m event at the South Australian Athletics Championships that were held recently. Andre will also be a part of the U18 boys’ 4 x 100m relay team. Well Done Andre!
