Principal’s Pen Our Community in 2015 Welcome to the 2015 College year. We are so thrilled to be back and eagerly anticipate the continued partnership with you in the education of your children. At the heart of Cornerstone is a living faith that for our Board, staff and many families is a way of life – much more than just ancient writings that centre around the coming and life of Jesus. The reality of His life and love have transformed our lives and this is the core motivation for everything we do. How we educate your children is founded upon this. The belief we have in the Christian message and the sense of family and community it brings is why we welcome a new member to the leadership team in 2015. Filip Hansen has commenced as our Community Development Officer and his role will be to draw us together and ensure that as we continue to grow, we don’t lose the family feel that the College is known for. This year sees other new developments in the areas of IT and the rollout of our new 1:1 device initiative. We will also continue to actively work towards opening up our Dunsborough campus in 2016 allowing for expanded growth and increased streaming opportunities in the Secondary school. These initiatives are essential for Cornerstone to maintain a cutting edge education that will give your child every opportunity in life beyond the classroom. Our aim is to provide an education that caters for the expectations of the community and meets the needs of our students. These expectations, coupled with a reduction in Government funding has brought about the need for us to increase fees. We recognise that for some this is a concern, and whilst the Board and Leadership stand firmly behind the decisions that led to increases, the manner with which we undertook notification requires our apology. We are very aware that the poor timing and lack of prior notification has caused some families stress. Principal’s PenOur Community in 2015Welcome to the 2015 College year. We are so thrilled to be back and eagerly anticipate the continued

partnership with you in the education of your children.

At the heart of Cornerstone is a living faith that for our Board, staff and many families is a way of life –

much more than just ancient writings that centre around the coming and life of Jesus. The reality of His

life and love have transformed our lives and this is the core motivation for everything we do. How we

educate your children is founded upon this.

The belief we have in the Christian message and the sense of family and community it brings is why

we welcome a new member to the leadership team in 2015. Filip Hansen has commenced as our

Community Development Officer and his role will be to draw us together and ensure that as we continue

to grow, we don’t lose the family feel that the College is known for.

This year sees other new developments in the areas of IT and the rollout of our new 1:1 device initiative.

We will also continue to actively work towards opening up our Dunsborough campus in 2016 allowing for

expanded growth and increased streaming opportunities in the Secondary school. These initiatives are

essential for Cornerstone to maintain a cutting edge education that will give your child every opportunity

in life beyond the classroom.

Our aim is to provide an education that caters for the expectations of the community and meets the needs

of our students. These expectations, coupled with a reduction in Government funding has brought about

the need for us to increase fees. We recognise that for some this is a concern, and whilst the Board and

Leadership stand firmly behind the decisions that led to increases, the manner with which we undertook

notification requires our apology. We are very aware that the poor timing and lack of prior notification has

caused some families stress. We are deeply sorry for this, and I ask that if you have concerns that they

be directed to the College Leadership who are very keen to walk through this adjustment, and can advise

of rebate options that are available.

2015 at Cornerstone is a year to feel excited about. We are very much looking forward to working

alongside you to see the fulfilment of our mission of ‘Education for Christ, Character, Community’.

Cleaver’s ClangersWhy do sea-gulls fly over the sea?

Because if they flew over the bay they would be bagels!

Why couldn’t the pirate play cards?

Because he was sitting on the deck!

SignmeeParents are reminded that all notes and permission documents will be sent home via the Signmee system in 2015 and that the Parent Pack is now a thing of the past. Access to Signmee requires you to access your email. If you are finding you are not getting the notes you should be, then please let the front office know immediately. Also, if your email address has changed, then this requires urgent attention as well. Thanks for your help.

AbsencesDo you have a sick child and wonder what the process of advising absenteism is?Well, it is simple. The front office is the place to contact, preferably by email. Please do not advise the class teacher as they may not have the opportunity to pass the information through to the admin team in time to fulfil our Duty of Care responsibilities. So email the ladies at [email protected], or call the front office on 9754 1144 before 9:30am.

UniformsDue to our Dunsborough campus coming on line in 2016, it is time for us to consider the uniform requirements for this new campus. As such, we are interested in the feedback from families about how we can make our uniform easier to manage as well as being more cost efficient than our current one is.Whilst no immediate changes are scheduled for the Busselton campus, what we learn from this process is sure to have beneficial results for everyone who attends the College. If we do make

any changes to our existing uniform, a transition period of 18 months to 2 years will be provided to have minimal impact on families.Consultation with families will occur as the year unfolds and random families will be selected to have their voice heard. We hope that this process will be one that shows our families that we are aiming to hear your thoughts, as well as deliver a great product and outcome for everyone.

Changes to the Secondary Discipline Process in 2015Some changes have been put in place for both the Primary and Secondary Discipline process in 2015 full details of which will be included in the Parent Handbooks which parents will access in the next few days. In summary of the changes to the Secondary process is as follows:1. 8 Steps over a year not 5 over a semester.2. No infringements but teachers will tally “concerns” and report 3 similar issues to Mr van der Tang.3. All “concerns” will be communicated home.4. Incomplete or unsubmitted assessments worth 10% or more (over a semester) are considered an immediate concern and reported to Mr van der Tang and home. Students who accumulate 3 in

a term will receive a step.5. Students will be sent to the office if major or continuous breach of classroom rules occurs.6. Each student’s behaviour record is available upon request.

Student Management System - PrimaryThe Primary school’s Student Management System is undergoing a few adjustments in 2015. The greatest change is that infringements and offences will not just accumulate over the Semester, but remain in place for the entire year.If you have any questions, please direct them to our Primary Administration team, Judy Nolan and Tina King.

ICT Frequently Asked QuestionsPlease keep an eye out for the ICT Frequently Asked Questions sheet that will be relevant for all students across the College. Students in Years 5-8 particularly need to be aware of the contents of this document. It is aimed that iPad’s will head home within the first three weeks with students.

Court OrdersThe Court Orders that some people have in place that relate to their children are documents that the College needs to have on file. If you have previously provided us with copies of Court Orders, AVOs or VROs, please ensure that the College is advised of ANY changes. We are reviewing our documents and note that some are needing updating. Please contact us as a matter of urgency if this is a situation that you need to address.

Taste and see that the Lord is good;

blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.

Parent RepresentativesOver the past few years to have had representative parents for each class who have acted as a point of contact. This system is currently being reviewed, so at the commencement of this year it will not be in place. Stay tuned for new initiatives instead.

Prayer LaunchWe have a wonderful tradition that will continue in 2015, and which you are invited to. Early in the

year, staff, members of the Christian community and families gather together to commit the coming year to God.This year’s prayer launch will be held on February 22nd, 6:30pm in the College Quadrangle. Please join us on this special night of commissioning.

Welcome!Welcome to Cornerstone in 2015!This year, as a new service for parents, Cornerstone introduced a COFFEE POINT that operated on the first day of school. This was an initiative of our newly appointed Community Development Officer, Filip Hansen, The COFFEE POINT was a place where parents enjoyed the chance to share a cuppa and catch up, we well as access information and place online uniform orders. Thanks Filip for your organisation....but thanks parents for making use of the opportunity to get together.

Introducing a new member of the team.As the new community development officer, Filip Hansen has been tasked with the job, as the college continues to grow, of maintaining and growing the strong sense of community we currently enjoy at Cornerstone as well as ensure that we stay true to the Christian ethos and vision upon which the college was originally founded. Filip brings to his new role a wealth of experience from the youth and community services sector including church ministry. He holds a certificate in training and assessment, diplomas in ministry, youth and community services work as well as a bachelor in organisational leadership.Filip also brings to the job a sound understanding of the education system, having studied secondary education as well as having worked as a high school chaplain, youth worker and manager of an educational program for at risk young people. Filip is married to Louise and has three daughters all of which are attending Cornerstone. He loves all things Apple as well as the outdoors including camping and fishing… and let’s not forget the fact that he is a self-proclaimed coffee snob.

Top result in Western AustraliaWe are delighted with the achievements of our graduates, and can advise that Eilidh Lucas, our College DUX, has obtained a score of 98.25, with a UMAT adjusted score of 99.95. Consequently she has her pathway towards Medicine at UWA secured. Eilidh has completed her entire education at Cornerstone and we are incredibly proud of her.Further congratulations are due as Eilidh was also announced as the top Outdoor Education student in Western Australia and has won a Course Exhibition for this subject. According to the documentation in the West Australian this is ‘awarded to the top eligible student obtaining the highest combined mark in a WACE course’. She also has been named as earning a Certificate of Commendation, which acknowledges her academic excellence in her WACE results. Well done Eilidh. Yet another very deserved honour.

,

Class of 2014Whilst we commence a new school year, the journey and successes of our graduates still remains of great interest to us.We have delight in advising that with our class of 17 graduates, 11 of them are commencing with University after being offered a range of different opportunities. Curtin University has offered places to students in Physiotherapy, Natural and Physical Sciences, Studies in Human Society and Communication and Media Studies. Edith Cowan University has offered one of our graduates a position in their Psychology course, and the University of Western Australia has offered positions in Medicine and Natural and Physical Sciences. Congratulations to the recipients.

,

We are the best in the state!

Once again many of our primary school classrooms have embraced “Crunch and Sip” time. The aim of “Crunch and Sip” is to encourage students to snack on fresh fruit and vegetables and sip on water throughout the day. Research shows that children concentrate for longer periods of time if they are well hydrated and consume nutrient dense foods. Nutrient dense foods such as fruits and vegetables provide a constant supply of energy compared to sugary, fatty and salty snacks which cause highs and lows in energy levels. This year we are encouraging all students to bring fruits and vegetables for their snacks and keep lollies, chocolate, sweet biscuits, chips, cool drink, boxed fruit juices and cakes high in sugar and white flour at home.

Looking back........
