Responsibility This term our value and self-directed learning focus is on Responsibility. Our aim is to help develop children who take responsibility for their actions and for their learning. Children may be at different stages of growth at any age. For example, some children may be a Seedling (Tupu) because “I can be trusted to make good choices about my learning” and they may also be a Sapling (Whanake) I can usually work independently within set time limits”. We have attached an A4 size copy of our poster (to the email that this newsletter came with), so that you can print it off and discuss with your child or maybe even have a copy on the fridge.

Music Festival Last Friday night our choir took part in the annual Christchurch Primary Schools’ Music Festival. As part of the massed choir our students represented us well and entertained and amused the audience. Thanks to Mr Nick Grant for working so hard with our choir and preparing them for this event. Every year students audition to be part of the Special Choir. This special choir sings particular pieces on each night of the 3 night festival. This year we congratulate our 3 special choir children Eva, Sophie and Lucy. Special congratulations to Lucy who has been selected for the special choir for four years running. A very special achievement.

Swimming for Years 0-4 Our Year 0-4 children have started swimming lessons at Wharenui Pool this week and these lessons will continue for another week. Following this our Year 5-8 students will have 2 weeks of swimming. These lessons are taken by qualified swimming instructors from Wharenui Pool. Thanks to the parents and caregivers who assist the junior children changing after swimming.

Athletics Day

What an amazing day we had for athletics! Our children gave of their best as they ran, jumped and threw throughout the day. Thanks to the parents who assisted with events and groups, to the staff who ran events and many thanks to Mrs Emma Maslen and Mrs Amanda Campbell who were responsible for the organisation and smooth running of the day. 63 of our children qualified for zones – congratulations to you all! Please see the notice below.

Zone Athletics The South West Zone Athletics day is on Tuesday 6th November, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Hillmorton High

School. The postponement day is Thursday 8th November. We need help from parents to set up on the day. If you can help, please email Emma Maslen at [email protected]

Weetbix TRYathlon 2019

Registrations are now open for the Weetbix TRYathlon 2019. It was a great success last year so why not give it a go! The TRYathlon will be held on Sunday 24th February 2019. Remember to link your entry form with the OLA School Group for a special entry price and a chance to win prizes. As part of this we also get a group photo taken on the day (just like this photo of last years participants)! Sign up now at try.weetbix.co.nz

Mountain Biking This year the Hillary Hub students have had the opportunity to experience mountain biking for the first time or to further develop their skills in this area. For many students this has been an opportunity to challenge themselves physically in a new sport and we are very impressed with the way they have done this. They will be having another session next week and I understand that Fr Chris is joining them for the afternoon!

OLA Prayer Space – Update Thank you to everyone for all your ideas and input into our proposed Outdoor Prayer Space – we really appreciate the effort that you all put in. Just to let you know that we are working behind the scenes combining all the amazing, creative, innovative ideas from our school families. Ideas included seating, planting, stones, crosses, statues, trees, Jesus and Mary to name but a few. We have work to do to pull all this together and get a plan in place. Good things take time so if we go quite for a while please know that a plan is being hatched for this special space within our school. We will keep you posted!

Helping Hands Thank you to those who support our OLA Helping Hands initiative of providing meals and baking throughout the year to families who need a helping hand. If you would like to support this school community initiative or just find out more information on what it involves please email [email protected] and we will be in contact with you to get included in this fantastic programme.

School Closed 14th November The Board of Trustees has made the decision to close our school on the 14th November due to Health and Safety reasons while our teaching staff are on strike. This means that there will be no staff on site and all the buildings will be closed. An email with further details will be sent out today. We understand that this may create some difficulties for you and thank you for your understanding.

Each entry increases your school’s chance of winning. Currently only 30% of school age children participate in swimming lessons and the Christchurch City Council’s Swimsmart team are keen to understand parents and caregivers views around water safety and learning to swim.
