NEWSLETTER #10

October 2016

Dearest Member,

The year is speeding to an end and there is only 2 months of club activities

left this year.

We have had some positive feedback on the last couple of monthly

newsletters. It is the intention to broaden the scope of the newsletter to be a

form of community communication, not only giving news of the Golf Club to

its members, but more communication between members and residents in

Bankenveld. As part of the broaden perspective, we wish to include two

“advertorials” of members and/or residents in Bankenveld every month.

Members and residents are hereby invited to share personal events e.g.

anniversaries, weddings, births, accolades received, etc. with us via the

newsletter.

Please send all information or news snippets to Lindiwe at

[email protected]

We wish to remind all members of Week of Champions (Bankenveld Open)

from November, 27th to December 3

rd. This is definitely one of the club’s

highlights on the calendar. Please make sure you enter ASAP. Details will

follow in the November newsletter.

1. OKTOBER MAAND

(C. Louis Leipoldt)

Viooltjies in die voorhuis - Viooltjies blou en rooi! Viooltjies orals op die veld, En orals, ai, so mooi! Dit is die maand Oktober, die mooiste, mooiste maand!

2. EDWIN’S TIP OF THE MONTH: Chipping Like a Champion

Here I am chipping with a less- lofted club, in this case my 7-iron. As with

all chip shots, I need a slightly descending blow into the back of the ball.

If I make the same stroke as when I putt – a level, brushing- type stroke

– I run the risk of hitting the ball with the leading edge of the iron

and that would cause the ball to scurry over the green. To ensure a

descending stroke on the ball, I set up with my weight favouring my left

and keep it there throughout the backswing.

The backswing does not need to be long, as the length of the 7-iron,

couple with the minimum loft, will bump the ball forward with very little

effort.

As I hit the shot, I allow my weight to move even more onto the left foot,

to further ensure the downward strike. I also let my body turn towards the

target, so that I can follow through positively towards the target. I would

rather be slightly too long on the putting surface than leaving the ball

short and still in the longer grass short of the green, as that shot would

be harder than a putt.

3. BIRDS OF A FEATHER ....

Our feature local bird of the month is the common African Jacana – spotted at hole nr 7 pond (Oom Lappies se dammetjie)

The African Jacana (Actophilornis africanus) is a wader in the family

Jacanidae, identifiable by long toes and long claws that enable them to

walk on floating vegetation in shallow lakes, their preferred habitat.

Jacanas are found worldwide within the tropical zone, and this species is

found in sub-Saharan Africa. For the origin and pronunciation of the

name, see jacana.

African Jacanas are conspicuous and unmistakable birds. They are

about 30 cm long, but females are larger than males. They have chestnut

upperparts with black wingtips, rear neck, and eyestripe. The underparts

are also chestnut in the adults, only in juveniles they are white with a

chestnut belly patch. The blue bill extends up as a coot-like head shield,

and the legs and long toes are grey.

Page 4: NEWSLETTER #10 October 2016 - Bankenveld Golf …bankenveld.co.za/golf/documents/Club Newsletter 2016-10.pdfNEWSLETTER #10 October 2016 ... Secondly the Jacana, as a bird, lays eggs

African Jacanas feed on insects and other invertebrates picked from the

floating vegetation or the surface of the water.

They breed throughout sub-Saharan Africa. It is sedentary apart from

seasonal dispersion. It lays four black-marked brown eggs in a floating

nest.

The Jacana has evolved a highly unusually polyandrous mating system,

meaning that one female mates with multiple males and the male alone

cares for the chicks. Such a system has evolved due to a combination of

two factors: firstly, the lakes that the Jacana lives on are so resource-rich

that the relative energy expended by the female in producing each egg is

effectively negligible. Secondly the Jacana, as a bird, lays eggs and eggs

can be equally well incubated and cared for by a parent bird of either

gender. This means that the rate-limiting factor of the Jacana's breeding

is the rate at which the males can raise and care for the chicks. Such a

system of females forming harems of males is in direct contrast to the

more usual system of leks seen in animals such as stags and grouse,

where the males compete and display in order to gain harems of

females.

The parent that forms part of the harem is almost always the one that

ends up caring for the offspring; in this case, each male Jacana

incubates and rears a nest of chicks. The male African Jacana has

therefore evolved some remarkable adaptations for parental care, such

as the ability to pick up and carry chicks underneath its wings.
