November 10, 2016 Happy November Warren! We have officially hit the holiday season! This can be an exciting time of year for some and an emotional and exhausting time of year for others. As a result, we typically see an uptick in student behavior. As such, I thought it would be an appropriate time to talk a little about behavior here at Warren Community School this week! What does it look like, how is it approached from a philosophical standpoint, etc.? There was a time when I grew up where the common approach to behavior was to simply slap a consequence on a student and hope they didn't do it again. This fear based tactic definitely can have an impact on some, but for many it can have the opposite effect than we intend it to have, especially when it is your sole strategy for getting a student to meet expectations. It can result in rebellion, depression, a negative sense of self, or even encourage a student to simply become more clever in their deceit and mischievousness. Students (really people in general) who are "acting out" typically have a problem they are wrestling with and the behavior is their effort to solve or avoid this problem. This is what we call the "function" of the behavior. When a student comes into my office, I don't simply slap a consequence on them. Consequences are important as they help relay the message that our actions have real consequences. However, they are only a piece of the puzzle. I approach behavior from a teaching standpoint. Behavior is complex and our students need help understanding their actions, why they are doing the things they do (the function of their behavior), how these actions impact others, the importance of honesty, and effective and appropriate problem solving techniques to help them change their behavior and manage their emotions. The goal of the work I do is to help these students learn from their mistakes (we all make mistakes) and to grow into responsible, empathetic members of our community. Most student conflict stems from a need being unmet. Sometimes this need is physical (a sensitivity to sound, a need for deep pressure stimulation, a need to get their energy out), sometimes emotional (past trauma, current trauma, anger management, relationship conflict, a death in the family etc) and other times a lack of social conflict resolution skills that they need help learning. Given how complex these situations can be, I tend to give a lot of time to investigating each situation very thoroughly. It is important that the students see how seriously I take their concerns and how much I care about them, and their futures. As such, over the years my office has become a place to solve problems and that starts with telling the truth. Students see my office as a resource rather than a dungeon. A place to take accountability and resolve conflict. Every student has a story and I hope we all can keep that in mind when our children are experiencing conflict. The goal is not to humiliate, label and degrade "bad" students, but to help children understand their actions, develop new strategies to get their needs met and realize that we all (even adults) make mistakes and that is okay, we just need to actively try to learn from those mistakes.
