Principal’s PenExciting News

The Hon Peter Collier MLC, the Minister for Education, wrote us a letter last week and I delight in being

able to share the contents with you. We have been given approval by the State Government to proceed

towards the relocation of our Secondary school to Vasse and the establishment of a Primary school in

Dunsborough. This has been the result of years of planning and work, and is a huge milestone in the

College’s history.

It marks the commencement of a new era at Cornerstone Christian College. Whilst the education of

your students continues as a priority for our teaching staff, the Leadership and Board will be actively

working towards putting things into place to ensure the transition to these new campuses is as smooth

as possible. We have enormous tasks before us, from re-registration of campuses and sourcing funds,

through to the hiring of exceptional staff. Please pray for us as we seek God’s leading in each of these

areas.

When Cornerstone commenced back in 1986, it was just a single classroom in an old house. Seventeen

students and their solitary teacher, Mr Phillip Anderson, entered into history. The pioneering families of

the day would hardly dared imagine all that the College has become and the influence and contribution is

makes within our region. Our prayer and hope with the changes before us, is that the legacy these early

visionaries left us with is now one we can further grow and leave to the generations of the future. You,

as families at the College, and your children as our students, are part of something new and exciting that

will remain forever.

But this story is not just about the pioneers of the past and the leaders of the present. Each of us have a

part to play, and I very much look forward to the journey we face together in the coming years - walking

on the path that our truly faithful and loving God has laid before us.

Free Dress Day - PrimaryA small group of year 5 students are competing in The Academic All Stars Day in week 7. This is a day which involves our students competing against other schools in activities across the various disciplines. As a part of our entry we need to raise funds for Compassion. Compassion is an international Christian child development and child advocacy ministry committed to working in partnership with local churches around the world to foster the spiritual, economic, social, physical and emotional development of children living in extreme poverty in over 26 developing countries. Therefore the Primary School will be having a FREE DRESS Day on Friday the 15th of August (week 4). All funds will go directly to Compassion. If your child wishes to wear free dress they will need to donate a gold coin.

Primary AssemblyA reminder to parents that our next Primary Parent Assembly will be held this coming Thursday, 2pm in the College Auditorium.This will be hosted by Miss Durell’s Year 1 class. Please join us.

Primary Art Room The primary art room has a need for clean jars with lids. So, instead of sending your old jars to the recycling bin, you could send them to school to be recycled! Clearly we don’t need thousands of them, but for the next week or so, if you have some, please send them in.

School ProductionLast week saw the production of ‘Frankenstein, the Musical Comedy’ performed by our Secondary Students.Well done to everyone involved.Mrs Dragstra and her team of gifted students, took the audience on an enjoyable journey through a classic tale that was turned on its head to deliver a wonderful message about the ridiculousness of man attempting to play God, and contains relevant themes of the importance of family and friendship, the destroying nature of gossip and rumour, and using one’s life to serve and benefit others. Special thanks must go to Mrs Sherrine Jones and Pastor Nathan Seinemeier for their significant voluntary contributions with the event.

Iluka Visions Art Exhibition 2014Cornerstone has experienced a great deal of success in this esteemed competition, and this year, two students have been selected for their works to be displayed at the Bunbury Regional Art Gallery with the possibility of taking home a prize.Ashlyn Atkinson has an untitled watercolour that will be on display, and Ethan Ashton will see last year’s College Art Prize Diptych entitled ‘The relativity of justice’ up for an award as well. The Iluka Visions Art Exhibition will be open from Friday 29th August to 31st October.

Year 12 OnlineYear 12 Parent information – Student Declaration and Permission online.Year 12 students need to complete an online form to declare that they are aware of the requirements to achieve the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) and for sitting the WACE examinations. These requirements are listed in the Year 12 Information Handbook which is available on the Authority website at http://www.scsa.wa.edu.au/internet/Publications/year12_information_handbook. Year 12 student and parents have received information about the requirements and are asked to complete this process online by the deadline of 29 August 2014. Failure to do so may impact your ability to achieve your WACE. If you are unsure of what is required please contact Jo Needham. CanteenThe canteen is desperately in need of assistance. Volunteers parents are what makes the canteen system work, and unfortunately, the numbers of helpers have been dwindling in recent months. There have been occasions that Senior staff have been required to be making lunches. Whilst we have leaders with a servant heart, it is not the best way to utilse their skills and so we are asking for anyone, who even on odd occasions may be able to help, to come forward.Please leave your name with the ladies at the front office if you can assist.Thanks in anticipation.

Study Tips from Miss Needham’s DeskSTUDY SKILLS TIP FOR AUGUST - FINDING HELP

Where can you find help when you are struggling at school?

PERSONAL ISSUESIf things in your life are upsetting you or stressing you this will affect your ability to learn effectively. Talk to your family, talk to your friends or other people you are close to or teachers you feel comfortable sharing with. However if you need additional support, make sure you find it rather than let things get worse. Mrs Robinson, the school chaplain, is a great source of help for students who may have personal issues impacting on their learning.

SUBJECT SPECIFIC ISSUESIf you are finding a particular subject difficult, the first place you should seek help should be your classroom teacher. Firstly ask questions in class as problems arise. If you find you have too many questions to ask in class (as you’d end up disturbing the class) then ask your teacher if you can make a time to see them before or after class or during lunch or after school. Teachers are happy to help students

who do their best and are keen to improve. Other places you might be able to find help are: books or extra textbooks in the school or local library, other students in the class, students in older years, other teachers at the school, family members, family friends.

LEARNING ISSUESIf you aren’t having trouble with a specific subject, but are finding learning for school in general difficult, the first people to talk to are your parents. You might like to write down your feelings or what you are experiencing so you can explain things to them clearly. Your parents can then help you decide what steps to take next. It is probably a

good idea for them to talk to your teachers first to get their perspectives and get some recommendations of what step to take next.

SAILING SEASON STARTS SEPTEMBER

The Leeuwin Ocean Adventure Foundation will be starting its 2014-15 sailing season this September, kicking off the season with a September voyage from Fremantle and then heading to Bunbury in October. We encourage any young person keen for an adventure, looking to gain 5 WACE points, or wanting to take part in a life-changing experience that will equip them with key life skills that will be beneficial for future employment, leadership and further education, to apply today. There are scholarships available for local youth aged 14-25 and places still available on these voyages.

Primary Music AfternoonOn September 5th, the Primary school (Year 3-6) will host a French themed Musical afternoon to showcase the skills of students. We encourage parents to attend and will provide an afternoon tea at the conclusion of the concert.It will be held at 2:00pm in the Auditorium.

Library Bags for Primary StudentsA number of primary students took their library bags home at the end of Term 2. Mrs King is kindly allowing children to use school owned/plastic bags but it is important that all students have their own bag to protect their books. Please ensure your children have their library bags back at school.

Grad Student Master’s SurveyDear Parents, Thankyou for considering participating in the study titled: “The attitudes held by parents’ towards secondary students’ use of digital learning technologies in schools”This research project is being undertaken by Curtin University to better understand

parents own use of technology, your understanding of your children’s use of technology, and whether or not you feel confident to support your children in their technology use. This will give schools a better understanding about how they can support you and your child’s education. To participate in this project we need you to complete an online survey.
