Liston College’s Special Character Statement

This is what the Lord asks of you

“Act justly, love tenderly and to walk humbly with your God” Micah 6:8

Dear Parents and Caregivers Term Break Tutoring Programme:

This is another reminder of the tutoring programme which is available during the term break. Included in this newsletter is a schedule of the subjects and times for this programme. Once again I thank the staff that willingly make this time available to help the students achieve success at NCEA.

Special Character Review:

We have received the final report from the recent Special Character Review. It is a very positive report and I have included the executive summary below.

Liston College Catholic Special Character Review Executive Summary

To the Parents and Community of Liston College

These are the findings of the external review of the Catholic Special Character of Liston College.

Liston College is a Year 7 to 13 state-integrated Catholic school for boys whose Catholic Special Character was reviewed under the three headings: Catholic Community, Pastoral Care and Religious Education.

A key provision of spiritual nourishment for staff is the annual retreat that begins the year which all staff attend. It is not only a time of spiritual nourishment but also helps to build relationships among staff. The staff retreat reiterates that education at Liston College is Catholic expressed through the Charism of Edmund Rice.

The prominence of the Chapel at the entranceway to the College alongside the large and distinctive Crucifix emphasizes the importance of the spiritual life to students and staff. The Mass held weekly in the Chapel is well attended.

School Newsletters begin with a Scripture quote and the front page includes the school’s Special Character statement. The chaplain writes an inspiring column for each edition of the newsletter. These features result in a vibrant Catholic branded newsletter.

There is a strong partnership between the Edmund Rice network of schools and Liston College. The network provides a series of professional development opportunities which the school is involved in. School documentation reflects this relationship by acknowledging that the College is an Edmund Rice school, talking about the Charism of Edmund Rice and prominently displaying in classrooms and documentation the thrust of the network to meet the challenge of Micah to “act justly, to love tenderly and to walk humbly with their God”.

Parent, staff and students all commented on the positive role-model presented by the Principal of a person full of faith. The DRS compliments the Senior Leadership Team playing a pivotal role in ensuring the Catholic Special Character is maintained and enhanced through the establishment of respectful relationship and expressions of Catholic life including liturgical events.

Liston College offers its students many opportunities to be of service to their peers and the wider community. Peer mentoring is one example of this. Forty year 12 students are trained by the school to mentor children in local primary schools.

The quality of its Pastoral Care is a strength of Liston College. It came through from parents and students that the college provides a very nurturing environment where students feel cared for. Students are also challenged to work to the best of their ability and to try new things; they are given opportunities to grow in confidence. Care for each student as an individual is at the heart of Pastoral Care at the College.

Students spoke of the teachers at Liston College in positive terms. Parents described the teachers as “wonderful”. The care given to the students by teachers impresses parents and students alike. They gave many examples of teachers going the extra mile outside normal school hours, of being approachable and willing to give extra support and of being passionate about student success in all fields of endeavour.

OLD BOYS ASSOCIATION

OLD BOY NEWS:

Tom Hendriks Liston College 1975 - 1981 Tom spent two years at Auckland University studying property valuation, whilst working part time at Air New Zealand. He then decided on a career in sales for a major hospitality equipment provider, working up to National Sales Manager over 7 years before leaving to pursue a restaurant and food production business career. After one year of hard work in the restaurant business without significant gain, real estate opportunities presented themselves and with Tom’s father having had his own successful real estate business, Tom started real estate in March 1993. After 10 years selling and 4 years auctioneering, the decision was made to start a Ray White office in Glen Eden and to continue selling. The office now has 23 employees and is in top 10% for the Ray White Group. Tom's son Jason has just finished his last year at Liston College achieving great results and is now at Auckland University in a pre law year. Both Tom and Jason are very complimentary about their experience at Liston College and are committed to playing a big part in the 40th Jubilee Celebration and the Old Boys Association.

Basketball PREM A 2014.

Congratulations to the Basketball boys and Mr Lord. WELL DONE LISTON!

Liston College Annual Year 7 & 8 Football Trip to Rotorua Tour Party: Ian (Cuz), Jeremiah (Jerry), Mr James, Michael Butler (Old Boy), Matt Smith (1st XI), 3 x Yr9’s, 8 x Yr8’s and 10 x Yr7’s. Games: vs Ngongotaha 12th Grade vs Ngongotaha 13th Grade vs Kaitao Middle School vs Rotorua Boys Yr9/10’s vs Western Heights High School Yr9/10’s Due to the AIMS Tournament (Tauranga) taking place in the same week, Liston was unable to play John Paul College and Rotorua Intermediate, but the Year 7’s who played and beat Kaitao 4-2 were ecstatic and well deserved the win. Goal scorers for Liston were Michael Walters (2), George Smith and Nikhil Prasad. The group visited Skyline Skyrides – each player had a sky swing and 2 luge rides. We also visited Rainbow Springs - toured the Kiwi Encounter and the park, finally spending time on the Big Splash. Altogether it was an excellent trip! Thank you to Mr James, Jerry, Michael and Matt for assisting with supervision and the coaching of the players.

SPORTS NEWS

Ji Hoon Sung has been accepted for a place at the University of Auckland's Piano Academy series. There were only 16 places for all of New Zealand high schools. Congratulations Ji Hoon.

Old Boy, Andrew Greenwood has received his PhD from Curtin University in Perth, Australia. Andrew is a Geo Physicist. We will profile Andrew in a future newsletter.

Connor Moors received Player of the Day at the recent Western Zone Rugby tournament. Well done Connor.

Continued from page 1

Positive relationships were observed throughout the school in the respectful staff/student and student/student interactions. These relationships were friendly, courteous and genuine.

The Director of Pastoral Care and Deans can be justifiably proud of their efforts to achieve this positive environment. The Pastoral Care team meets regularly and work hard to consider and respond to the needs of any boy not managing any aspects of his study or relationships.

Liston College takes great pride in the hospitality it offers students of different cultures; full time students, short-term visiting students and foreign fee paying students. This is reflected in the display of flags in the Chapel and the interest students show in ensuring every boy’s ethnic identity is recognised.

Religious Education lessons observed were well focused and meaningful. Students were engaged with learning. Classes with the Assistant to the DRS included an impressive range of learning activities and a strong use of higher order questioning. All Religious Education lessons observed incorporated clear learning intentions.

Liston College is a College justifiably proud of its Edmund Rice Charism which permeates the life of students and staff. It is a College educating young Catholic men in a spirit which remains both true to Edmund Rice’s vision and relevant to the world of today. The incorporation of Edmund Rice values into the understanding and implementation of the Restorative Justice process is an example of this pride’s practical implementation. The students’ understanding of the relationship between values and the Restorative Justice process is supported by the impressive units of work at Year 7 and 8 developed by the Director of Religious Studies that introduces the Behaviour Management System in accessible ways within the framework of Special Character principles.

Liston College is to be congratulated on a strong commitment to its Catholic Special Character through a devoted staff and Board ably led by a faith-filled Principal.

We are trialling a Summer Reading Programme from December 2013 to January 2014. We would like to see our library books being read over the summer break, instead of sitting on our library shelves. In the last week of school, Year 7-10 students who are returning to Liston in 2014 are able to borrow up to 10 library books to read over the summer holidays. Boys are welcome to come to the library for a permission slip and draw up a wish list of the books they would like to borrow. These books will need to be returned in the first week of school in 2014. Any losses or damages will need to be paid for as per usual. If you need further clarification, please see me at the Performing Arts Evening on Thursday 26 September, or phone me during school hours.
