School Assembly

Due to Gala Sport Friday assembly will be

held in the a5ernoon commencing at

2.20pm.

Gala sport is for all children in years 3 to 6.

Teams play against other Catholic schools in

our Zone and learn the rudiments of team

sports. Yr 3 will par+cipate in AFL at Mo9

Street, Yr 4 Soccer - venue tba, Yr 5 Netball

at Downey Park, Yr 6 Touch Football at West

Mitchelton Ruby League Grounds. The

children play team sports for the next 6

weeks on Friday mornings.

Choir News

Yesterday some children from our choirs

sang the Na+onal Anthem at the opening

ceremony of the new Everton Park

Woolworths. The choir sang beau+fully and

were a real credit to themselves and our

school.

All choir notes are now available on the

Parent Portal. This means that if a child

misses out on a

note or loses

one, the

informa+on is

always readily

available.

Yr 6 Snippets

This week in year 6 we’ve been doing a few

tests and working on our skills in Japanese.

We’ve been looking at safety power points.

This week and the rest of the year you’ll see

the year 6’s in senior shirts as we received

them this week.

Parents are reminded that the Parent Portal

has a facility where you can update your

personal informa+on. The informa+on is

then forwarded to the school to make the

necessary changes.

New parents received their login and passwords at the

beginning of school year. When the parent portal was

launched in 2014 parents received an email with their

login in password. Unfortunately only 20% of parents are

using the parent portal. We encourage parents to login

and familiarise themselves with the portal and this

technology will gradually provide parents with more

informa+on which they can access 24/7. Teachers

endeavour to upload homework and notes to the portal

to ensure parents have access to these as we appreciate

notes etc do not always make their way home.

School Photos

These will be sent home with your child today. If you

have any ques+ons please contact Advanced Life

Photography directly on 1300 728 972.

Defence New

As a school community we would like to send care

packages to our Defence Parents serving overseas. In

order to do this we need dona+ons and we are asking for

your assistance. Items that can be sent: toiletries,

sunscreen,chap s+ck, lo+ons, kleenex, magazines, word/

math puzzle books, hard candy, gatorade powder, instant

oatmeal in single serve packets, trail mix, dried fruit,

coffees, teas, microwave popcorn, jelly, chewing gum,

salsa, nuts peanut bu9er, beef jerky, milo, iced tea mix,

small ba9ery operated desk fan, tennis balls, hacky sacks,

card games, book light, newspapers, co9on socks, nerf

balls, frisbees, vegemite, comic books and cough drops.

Please do not send in aerosol items. All food must be in

sealed packets. I hope these sugges+ons help. Families

are welcome to write a le9er of support and

encouragement to our soldiers. I will include these in the

packages. Please leave these at the office in a plas+c bag

labelled 'Defence'. Friendship, Walking and Games Club

are in full swing. It’s nice to see so many of your

beau+ful children par+cipa+ng. Un+l next, week take

care. Janet Dyer DSTA

Worm Farm by Ava Cooper

Year 4 sells worm juice at Assembly each week. The cost

for 2 litres is $1. We donate the money collected to

Caritas. Worm juice is very good for your garden.

We feed the worms twice a week and they are fed

blended fruit and veggies. Some foods they don’t like are

citrus, onions and garlic. We have a roster to

feed, flush and pour the juice. The worm

farm is kept under the Year 6 staircase.

Mothers’ Day Stall 2015

What a great result for the Mothers’ Day Stall. It was

lovely to see the looks on the children’s faces as they

chose a gi5 for mum – some knew exactly what they

wanted, others were more discerning and others were

just excited to be choosing something on their very

own. We made a profit of $2,300 which I’m sure the P&F

will put to good use. Thank you to all those who so

generously gave dona+ons, there was a wonderful

selec+on for the children. Thank you to the ladies who

helped on the day – they made it run seamlessly and to

Gretchen Doolan who did such a wonderful job with the

newsle9er ads. Also thank you to the staff and teachers

for their assistance. Congratula+ons to the following

winners of the raffle which was drawn on Thursday

a5ernoon (the year 3s took it out!):

1. Jackson Regal 3H

2. Ma+lda White 3F

3. Chloe Bingley 3M

Thank you once again and I hope you enjoyed your

Mother’s Day.

Mother’s Day Classic

A huge congratula+ons to all the members of the ‘OLA MUMS’ team that par+cipated in the Mother’s Day Classic event at South-

bank on Sunday. We had a team of 17 in the end, including not only Mums, but families too. Everyone completed their events and

it was a great day had by all. A special thanks to all those that helped fundraise for the team including family, friends and fellow

members of the school community. We loved the messages of support on our fundraising page. A massive ‘well done!’ as we have

so far managed to raise a whopping $655 (more than twice our target!) to go towards breast cancer research. The fundraising con-

+nues un+l May 15 so there’s a smidge more +me if you s+ll wish to make a dona+on. Just go to the link for the team:

Parents are reminded that all sold and unsold +ck-

ets must be returned to the office by the 23nd

May.

Volunteers are desperately needed and the

spreadsheet for you to volunteer will be a9ached

you can spare any +me nominate a +me and re-

turn the spreadsheet to the office.

As a busy parent it’s easy to give your voice a work out when you don’t get the coopera+on you want from your chil-

dren.

You know how it goes.

You want your son or daughter to give you some help and they don’t respond.

Perhaps, you want a child to stop annoying his or her sibling.

Or you simply want your kids to QUIETEN DOWN inside.

When your request for coopera+on is ignored.

So you do what over 90% of parents do. That is, you repeat yourself. Then if that’s s+ll ignored you RAISE the volume.

‘I’ll yell at them. That should work!’

Hmm, I’m not so sure.

Usually yelling only succeeds in producing parent-deaf kids.

If yelling, shou+ng or raising your voice is a habit you’ve developed to get coopera+on then here’s a great strategy to

use instead.

Next +me your kids ignore a reasonable request move close to them and quietly repeat your request once.

No aggression, just expecta+on.

It means you may need to stop what you are doing. So be it.

Proximity is a powerful influencer. Great teachers know this. That’s why they move around in class so much: to teach

and also to manage.

So save your voice for conversa+on, encouragement and affec+on.

Use your body effec-vely to manage kids.

The key, of course, is to do it.

My challenge for you is to bite your tongue when you want to yell. Take a deep breath (as the Mood Meter teaches

you) and move into your child’s proximity. Don’t stare him down. Just be close to him or her.

Keep doing it and the coopera+on levels you get from your kids will increase astronomically over +me.

But you’ve got to do it.

In future don’t yell, move closer.
