Page 3 – School news Advent Mass

On Monday 2nd December Father Damian came into school to recognise the start of Advent. First, he listened to some of the children in key stage two give confession. Secondly, we celebrated a lovely advent mass. Our musicians did a fine job as usual, our altar servers are growing in confidence every time and the year 3 pupils read wonderfully. During mass the children were asked, ‘Are you ready for Jesus?’ The children reflected on how they could get ready this Advent to prepare a space in their hearts. Everyone thought about how they could be kind to others, think about people who are lonely and how they could pray more.

Page 4 – School news Science Day

On Monday 2nd December, three children from Class 3 were invited by The Ogden Trust to a Science Day held at Bidford Primary. The day started with a discussion on where light comes from and how we see the light. The second activity was to create shadow figures using tinfoil. They manipulated the foil into the shape of a figure and then shone a torch on it to create a shadow. After lunch, they got even more creative as they created kaleidoscopes with their own patterns. The main thing our pupils learned from the day was that science is all around us and the more you do and observe; the more fascinating science is.

Page 5 – School news Bingo

On the evening of Monday 2nd December FOSM held our annual festive bingo. The hall was packed with members of the local community and this year it was wonderful to see so many of our parents joining in. This year we had a new bingo caller, Finlay’s dad, proudly wearing a gold, sparkly jacket bought just for the occasion. Baz did a wonderful job all evening and hosted the evening with a perfect blend of professionalism and personality. The evening was a big success and we raised over £500 on the night. We would like to thank all of our parents who helped out either on the evening or beforehand setting up or gathering prizes. We would also like to thank so many of the wonderful local businesses and retailers who generously donate prizes. Thank you letters to everyone who donated a prize were written this week and on Friday, Head boy and girl, Alexander and Isobel hand delivered the cards on the High Street.

Page 6 – School news The aliens have landed

On Wednesday 4th and Thursday 5th December we were treated to two beautiful performances of the key stage one nativity ‘Christmas With The Aliens.’ Miss Duxbury and Mrs Wilson did an amazing job preparing the children who were brilliant remembering all of their lines and words to eight songs. Betsy welcomed the parents into the hall whilst waiting for the performances to start with Christmas carols on the keyboard. Thank you very much to the parents for providing such stunning costumes which really enhanced the performances.

Class 2 have their very own ‘Elf on the Shelf’ who they have named Felix. He is a very naughty elf and every morning when they come in they look to see what chaos he has caused overnight. His naughtiest tricks to date are changing all the children’s behaviour cards to red, playing with the remote and getting stuck on the whiteboard screen!

On Friday 6th December Class 1 walked into Henley with the small St Mary’s Christmas tree. The tree forms part of a display of Christmas trees in St John’s church for one week from the Christmas light switch on until Friday 13th December. Each child brought in a gold or blue tree decoration which they proudly displayed on the tree. Thank you to the reception parents for providing the decorations.

Page 9 – School news Saxophone Assembly

On Tuesday 10th December, Class 4 had their final music lesson of the term with Miss Caudell. At the end of the lesson, parents and the rest of the school were welcomed into the hall to watch them perform. The children confidently performed two songs they had managed to learn in just one term, an impressive achievement as the saxophone is a difficult instrument to master. They ended the assembly by singing a wonderful rendition of The 12 Days of Christmas. Next term, it’s the turn of Class 2 to have weekly music lessons with Miss Caudell and they will be learning the recorder.

Page 10 – Pupil achievements Carol Service

On Tuesday 10th December, parents and grandparents were treated to a beautiful Carol Service from the pupils in key stage two. The service was held in church, as it is a wonderful venue and means we don’t have to restrict numbers. This year’s service was very special and personalised. As well as carols and bible readings, some pupils told us about how Christmas is celebrated in other cultures. We learned about Christmas traditions in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Mauritius, Poland and Uganda. Their singing was stunning and many children rose to the challenge of a singing solo or in a small group. Joshua very bravely played Silent Night on the keyboard before the start of the service to a very attentive audience!

Page 11 – Pupil achievements Big Climate Fightback

Well done and thank you to Alexander, Hugo and Dylan who represented the school by planting a Silver Birch Tree in Jubilee Park on Saturday 30th November. We later received this message: “On behalf of the Maintenance Working Party of

the JPC I would like to thank you for taking part in Henley's contribution to the Big Climate Fightback. Please thank

all your children who took part. Trees play a huge role in absorbing the carbon emissions that threaten to destroy the planet as well as working wonders for biodiversity and preventing flooding. Henley did its bit helped by all of you.” Christmas Lights Congratulations to Dylan who helped turn on the Henley Christmas Lights on Saturday 7th December. The big switch on was preceded by a community carol service and afterwards we were all treated to a fabulous firework display.

Dance Award Evie recently took park in the IDTA Freestyle Silver Medal exam. She has just received her results and learned that she got 94% across all three areas, which gives her an honours certificate. Fantastic!

Up until 17th December, Hugo is collecting items to support SIFA Fireside and hopefully make Christmas better for the homeless and vulnerable in Birmingham.

Items that we CAN accept: Sleeping bags, men’s practical clothing and winter accessories, women’s practical clothing and winter accessories, tinned food, tea and coffee, chocolates, biscuits and men’s toiletries. Items that we CANNOT accept Fresh/perishable food, home-made food, any food items that contain alcohol, suits, duvets or throws, pillows, curtains, electrical items, children’s clothes, toys, books, mugs.
