Newsletter 13/2016 Week 3 Term 3 9 August 2016 Dear Parents and Caregivers of Baverstock Oaks School Winter is definitely here, I hope you are able to snuggle up at home in the evening and keep cosy. A great time for family reading. When children see parents enjoying reading they sometimes get the bug also, or maybe read a book together as a family. So much fun when we have so much screen time these days. I hope you have checked out our new school website. It is AWESOME. A HUGE thank you must go to Genee Crowley and \Helen De Leeuw who spent many days getting materials ready to be uploaded. It is a credit to you both. The top right corner has a ‘choose a language’ function which will turn the whole website into the language of your choice. There are so many new functions, it is a great place to explore with your child or alone. Take a look… http://www.baverstock.school.nz/ Fun Friday electives have proven to be another very popular innovation this year. All children across the school select what they want to be involved in between morning tea and lunch. These activities vary from art, walking, martial arts, dance, reading and so many more. Have a chat with your child/children about what they are doing for Fun Friday activities. This week is the annual Howick and Pakuranga Dance Festival at Elim College on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. I am really looking forward to attending and seeing our two groups perform. I am so proud of the groups that represent our school and the teachers who put in many hours working with our students so they are prepared. We welcomed a group of Korean students last week with an official assembly. They are with us until week 4 and in the Tall Oaks classrooms. This is a great mutual learning experience for these students and our Baverstock Oaks students as they share and compare life and learning and learn together. Parent Corner – Helping your children deal with frustration When our children face something they don’t want to do, they experience frustration. They then express their emotion in lots of different ways. They may negotiate, yell, cry, refuse and occasionally (thankfully), calmly get on with it. As parents, it's tricky to hold back our own frustration in these moments. One mindful parenting technique you can try is simply noticing your child's struggle and empathising with them - “Turning the iPad off is so frustrating, it’s a great game you’re playing”, or “You both want the same toy, that’s tough for you guys.” It is amazing how often we don’t need any more parenting than this. It’s simple, respectful and often enables kids to move on swiftly. If they need some more help with problem- solving, reflecting what you see and empathising is the best way to start. I hope you find these parenting corner tips useful. Often the simple little things can help the big things diminish. I hope you are having a great week. Mary Wilson PRINCIPAL

Parent Corner – Helping your children deal with frustration

When our children face something they don’t want to do, they experience frustration.

Valderama Tree Planting On Thursday, 28TH of July 2016, a group of Enviro monitors from Baverstock Oaks School went tree planting at Valderama Reserve. It was a wet and mucky day. Anna,Talia and Louis who are Park Rangers, taught us how to plant the trees properly. We had to be careful and not step in the sticky mud. But I did anyway. I got stuck and it was like

quicksand on my gumboots. We planted over 300 trees and shrubs. They were all different kinds of native New Zealand trees, shrubs and grasses. We used sharp spades, so we needed to be careful not to hit anyone accidently. To plant the tree, we had to make a square large enough for the plant to fit in. We also needed to make sure that the plant was a little bit below ground level, so the pukekos couldn’t eat the plant roots. It was a steep hill we were planting on. So we needed to make sure where we were stepping was not slippery. Near the top it was mainly rocky. It was a great opportunity to get involved with the environment and make a difference. The best part of the whole experience was knowing that in 3 to 5 years time all of the trees and shrubs we have planted will have grown. They may even be taller than me. We all need to look after our environment and I am proud that we played a

small part in doing this. By Yaseen Karimi

LOWER C LEARNING Lower C loved celebrating and being part of the opening ceremony. We dressed in clothes that represented our culture or the colours of our countries flag. We had made flags in class to wave in the parade. After the parade, we invited our families to come and read stories from around the world with us and then we shared food from different cultures. It was a great day and we had lots of fun.

The truth about too much screen time for your child Why setting technology boundaries is essential for your child’s brain development. Technology has transformed the way we live, work, shop and travel. But it has also changed the way our children play…and that’s not necessarily a good thing! Unless parents keep screen time in check, today’s technology overload could impede brain development in young children and hinder their growth into happy and healthy adults………….

If you are interested in finding out more, please to to our website - Parent Info - Digital Citizenship – How much screen time should your child be having?

The Panther Lightning flashes across the sky. The trees are dancing with the wind. Blue wavy water splashes down from the rocky mountains into a beautiful waterfall. The panther lives in this South American Rainforest. The rainforest is filled with twirly vines twisted around the branches of the trees. Hollow logs covered in green moss lay on the leaf covered ground. Sun-beams shine upon the jungle. The sun shines and the games begin. The black panther was camouflaged by the shadows in the jungle as he slowly walked towards the starting line. The panther’s eyes blinked, his eyes were as yellow as the sun and sparkled like the stars above. He rolled his shoulders like an Olympic runner. His shoulders blades popped up like a jack in the box. He pulls his back hindquarters up like a runner at the starting block. The panther’s eyes flash like lightning. His black fur flattens as he speeds through the jungle. He ran as fast as a Lamborghini. He ran so fast like an arrow from a bow. As the light shines on him the panther transforms into Usain Bolt. The panther dislikes the flashing dazzling stadium lights shining upon him. He is from the dark jungle and he prefers to remain a panther. The lights make him transform into a human, but not any human - but the fastest man on earth, Usain Bolt. It is hard to become a famous human being because all the other humans want to touch him, race him, take his photo or get an autograph. All a panther wants is to run fast, hunt for prey and sleep.

Room 31 Writing The creature used his great biceps to lift himself up into an extreme handstand. The scaly green creature jumped off the gigantic cliff into an amazing synchronised dive. The slim body soared away from the blue sky at high speeds; his sharp tail not moving one bit. SPLASH! His cautious yellow eyes watched as he sunk into the deep blue lake. The fearful fish dash away as the dangerous spikes of the creature enter the deep blue. The alligator's golden eyes popped out of the blue watching and seeing everything. It swam like Michael Phelps to the shallows. On land it sprinted to the top of the cliff in just a matter of seconds just like Usain Bolt in his big moment. His long snout sniffing up the beautiful air. By Lucas Sue Room 31

Baverstock Oaks Rugby team Last week the Baverstock Oaks rugby team played two very tough games. On Wednesday 3 August the boys played against Pigeon Mountain Primary. Baverstock went into half time with a 7-point lead. After a quick pep talk with coach Phil Baverstock secured the lead with an end result of 24-0. On Friday 5 August the boys played against Mellons Bay Primary. It was a tough game but with great team work Baverstock Oaks came away with a 29-0 win.

Great work boys!!!

Netball The J2 Netball team had a very close home game against Star of the Sea last week. The girls worked together ensuring they used the space on the court. They displayed good sportsman ship amongst their team and towards the other team. The final result was 4-3 to Star of the Sea. Saturday Netball On Saturday 6th of August J2 braved the cold and windy elements

to play an amazing game of netball. All of the players worked as a team to come away with a 19-7 win. Coach Alicia said it was very hard to choose a player of the day as they all worked so hard. Christina, a new player to the team, was player of the day. Well done!
