Upper Mt Gravatt Wishart Parish

Guided by the Holy Spirit, we aim to be an evangelising, faith-filled parish whose members care for one another and are welcoming and inclusive.

A reflection on the readings by Rev Dr John Chalmers, Archdiocese of Brisbane This is a challenging set of readings, potentially dangerous in the hands of amateur commentators. Their flawed thinking would have us reject not only the practice of euthanasia but demean those who advocate it. This cannot be allowed to happen. Both pro and anti-euthanasia stances share a value: that each person deserves to be treated with respect from birth to death. The question is: how do we faithfully articulate our values in end-of-life care? One response is to take practical steps to end one’s life and suffering. An alternate response is to offer palliative care that deals with pain while also making meaning around the end of life, (indeed, to make meaning of one’s whole life).

Malachy 3.19-20: Notice the variety of images/metaphors in the first reading, most of which focus on fire: Getting fired up | Bushfires destroy | We can get more than our fingers burned | Flames can also warm the heart | The sun of justice with its healing rays shines on those who aren’t arrogant. The first part of the first reading focuses on the destructive nature of fire. Then, as the reading ends, we read that the Lord is coming to rule the world with justice. One might explore the various kinds of justice e.g. procedural justice, proactive judges; retributive justice, poetic justice, social justice, restorative justice. What does this reading have to offer the dialogue around euthanasia?

The Responsorial psalm: If the reading from Malachy tacks towards the negative, the Responsorial psalm more than fairly establishes a sense of balance. There’s mention of singing joyfully before the King. Here, in response to a dark and dismal reading from Malachy we are lifted up. As the final sentence puts it: He will rule the world with justice and give people with justice (what kind of justice is called for?) The Lord comes to rule the earth with justice! Life is a social reality. It doesn’t belong to any individual. It always involves others.

2 Thessalonians 3.7-12: Thessalonians meanders its way through toil and drudgery, night and day. Reading between the lines; we are created relational. This extract from Thessalonians gives evidence of many and various interactions.

Luke 21.5-19: A heartfelt question arises: what is the world coming to? Are we on the road, not only to perdition, but of self-destruction? Will the world end (individually and corporately) in hopelessness or will it end in fulfilment? This is a fertile image of great promise. What would it say re euthanasia? What stands behind the text? How is God calling us

to be a Christ-centred

Church … that is

Prayerful & Eucharistic?

This National Theme for Discernment is inspired by the voices of the People of God who shared how deeply they treasured the Eucharist and the sacramental and liturgical life of the Church. There was a call for stronger and more engaging preaching, with an emphasis on the Word of God and connection to daily life, some seeking a uniquely Australian expression of prayer and Eucharistic celebration, drawing from the wisdom and rituals of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and also bringing together the many migrant communities which make up the Church in Australia. There were many divergent expressions of ways in which people and communities encounter God through their experiences of prayer, music and liturgy and a desire for catechesis, training and formation for those in ministries related to these. What do you think? Have your say on Wednesday 20 November at 9.30am OR 7.00pm in St Bernard’s Community Centre.
