Principal’s Message
MOTIVATE - EDUCATE - CELEBRATE
Welcome to Spring and at the end of the week a well-deserved break for your children and our staff.
As always this term has been jammed packed with learning. We have celebrated our love of books
through Book Week , consolidated our understanding of the Japanese culture during Japanese day
and sung our hearts out at the Massed Choir.
FAREWELL MRS BISHOP
Mrs Bishop retires at the end of this week. Ardross Primary School and every student over the last 10
years has been privileged to have Mrs Bishop drive our sustainability through many mediums. You
only need to walk through our gardens and smell the flora, listen to the birds and see our indigenous
links to have a small insight into Mrs Bishop’s impact.
During Mrs Bishop’s leave Mrs Ellery has taken on the role as Deputy Principal. I would like to thank
Mrs Ellery for her commitment to the students at our school and for developing and strengthening
our student services. A big thank you also to Mrs Klaver who has taught in tandem with Mrs Ellery in
Room 3. Your laughter and passion for teaching will be missed.
WELCOME TO MR MIRABELLA
I would like to welcome Mr Tony Mirabella who has been successful in gaining the role as Deputy
Principal at Ardross Primary School. Mr Mirabella is very excited about his appointment and will
commence on the first day back in Term 3.
ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
As a child this was my favourite day of the year and it continues to be so. For an event to run so
smoothly there has to be an enormous amount of planning. Miss Brown and her band of helpers
have worked tirelessly to ensure its success and ensure students are able to shine. Thank you to every
student, staff member and community member for your help.
MAGGIE DENT
Thank you to our wonderful P&C, and especially Alice Brennan, for organising an evening with
Maggie Dent. Maggie spoke to a large audience of parents about the importance of Calmness,
Silence and Stillness in Children’s Lives. One of Maggie’s messages was to slow down and take
one-on-one time with your children. One of the most obvious one-on-one moments is reading to your
children in their bed as they prepare to go to sleep. No matter how irritating it can be if you have to
read the same picture book 35 times – hopefully still trying to sound enthusiastic – these precious
moments are ones that nurture both parents and children.
CHILDHOOD ILLNESS
As a matter of courtesy to our students and parents can you please notify the school via reception
or your child’s classroom teacher if your child has a contagious health condition. This allows us to
alert parents so they are aware of potential symptoms. SCHOOL COMMUNITY SURVEY
I invite you to complete our School Community Survey which is accessible following the link :
https://schoolsurvey.edu.au/s/U5S6EvL2
Please complete the survey by Friday, 21 September. Your voice is very important in ensuring our
school caters for the needs of our students now and into the future. As part of our accountability
process we are also asking students from Years 4, 5 and 6 and all staff to complete their own surveys.
The results are also directly linked to the non-academic targets for our school in our Business Plan

CELEBRATING LEARNING - ROOM 8
On Tuesday, 4 September it was Room 8’s assembly. We took our audience on a journey around the word, firstly
across the Earth’s continents and oceans and secondly, to a fantasy world, to ‘where the wild things are!’
In Geography this term the Year 2s are learning about the continents and the oceans and we remembered a lot of
interesting facts through song. It was fabulous to hear many of the classes singing along with us. In class we have also
been learning how to locate the Equator and the Tropic of Cancer and Capricorn.
During assembly we performed a play based on the book ‘Where the wild things are’ by Maurice Sendak. We made
our own masks and helped to paint the props. It was a fun afternoon and an awesome way to finish a magical and
fantastical term of work.
ATHLETICS CARNIVAL 2018
After eight weeks of training, three weeks of trials, and two weeks of constantly checking the weather, it was carnival time!
All of the students worked extremely hard all term long to prepare for both the individual and team events.
Tuesday started with the jumps for the Year One and Two classes, while Years Three through Six journeyed to Applecross SHS
to run the 200 and 400 metre events. After a bit of a drizzly start to the day, everything went well and every student got the
chance to show their hard work. This saw every year level long jumping, Years Three through Six running, and throwing, while
the Year Five and Six students went off the mat again in the triple jump competition.
With most of the championship points squared away on the Tuesday, the students were ready in full faction colours to show their teamwork and team spirit! Every student raced through the finish line and we made it through the rain! The hard work
that each of the factions have been putting into their team game trainings during recess and lunch breaks was evident, as
the teams worked more like units weaving with the baton, running around their leaders, and passing back and forth with
speed and accuracy!
Taking a break during the rain, everyone ducked into the undercover area as we sat in rapture while each faction showed
us their best cheer! Wellard started it off and wowed us not only with their rhymes, but with their dance moves. We were
impressed by Waylen’s crisp and clear delivery of their chant. Butler had students of all age groups dancing as they sang us
their battle-cry! Ultimately it was Lukin who took home the Championship Cheer Trophy as all students danced and sang
their way into victory!
After the rain slowed down, we were ready for the relay events. Year One and Two students ran in a 50 meter shuttle relay,
while the Year Three through Six students ran in an adapted circular relay. The final event was the grand relay featuring the
fastest students on the day in every year level running with their faction. After Wellard sealed off the final race, the points
were tallied and Waylen claimed the 2018 Championship! Congratulations to Waylen for their win and to all of the factions
for the hard work they have put in this term. Here are the Year Level Champions:
These two brilliant days of sport could not have gone forward without all of the support from the students, staff, and the
whole community. I want to thank all of the teachers for the time they spent training during sport and their break times as
well as everyone who took on extra roles and responsibilities on carnival day.
Thank you to all of the parents who came out to support the students on their big day and the P&C for organising the cake
stall and coffee van for all of us to enjoy. I would also like to thank the P&C for their help in funding timing solutions to help
with the scoring side of the carnival. Jumps and Throws day is a particularly hectic day as we have five events running
simultaneously and it could not have progressed so smoothly without the parents working the pits and throws areas. Thank
you so much for giving up your time to come down and measure. Thank you to the parents who help with ribbon distribution
and photography on Friday. There are so many events we had to push through, and your efficiency was impressive!
Huge thank you to the faction captains for all of the hard work they put in helping to train their factions, coming up with
their chants and cheers, practising the changes between the team games, organising ribbons, and preparing for their last carnival! Of course, last but not least thank you to all the students for coming out, trying your best, and having a blast! It was
a day for the students and we as a community saw a lot of smiles running around on Friday!

SEEKING DONATIONS - OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD
We're doing 'the shoeboxes' again!
The Ardross PS P&C has again put their support behind Operation Christmas Child. Operation Christmas
Child fills shoeboxes with small yet meaningful gifts for children in desperate situations, many of who haven't received gifts
before.
We are seeking donations of gifts from the school community. We are collecting gifts for female and male children aged
2 to 14 years old to wear, to play with, for school, to love or for personal hygiene.
Each class will fill two shoeboxes, with excess donations filling a few extra boxes.
How do you get involved? Easy!
Each class will have a list pinned up next to the class where you can volunteer to bring certain items. Pop your family
name next to the items you'll bring (so that we don't end up with 400 yo-yo's and no soap), and then just bring your dona-
tion to your class and the students will pack the boxes early next term. We'll send out a list on Connect too.
Some items are prohibited to protect children or to comply with overseas government and customs restraints. These in-
clude any food or lollies, items that could break or melt, any used or damaged items, items that could scare or harm a
child (including any war or pirate related toys) and any gambling related items.
For gift ideas or for more information, head to operationchristmaschild.org.au. Nathan Hoyle

LOST PROPERTY
Please stop by and look through the lost property. There are lots of jackets, hats and drink bottles, many of which were
left in the faction bays at the Athletics Carnival. Items which were named have already been returned to their owners.
BOOK FAIR THANKYOU
The Book Fair we held on Friday, 7 September was once again a wonderful success and we would like thank all the
parents, grandparents and children who purchased books on the day. A special thankyou to our dedicated library staff plus Mrs Stenton, who despite being a parent of a former student, still volunteered her time to help make this a great
school event.
We sold $3,953.20 worth of books and the library receives 20% of this in cash to go towards purchasing new books and
literacy events throughout the year.
What a fantastic effort - your generosity is very much appreciated! Natalie Jones & Lois Bowden

P&C NEWS
A big thank you to Alice Brennan for organising a fantastic evening with Maggie Dent on 5 September. The evening was
well attended by Ardross Primary School parents, teachers and friends with Maggie offering her practical and common
sense parenting tips. Everyone that I spoke to learnt something new and walked away knowing that they could put these
new tips into practice straight away. Also thank you to Coffee Club Garden City, Woolworths Garden City, Dinner Twist
and Alice Brennan for organising wonderful Raffle prizes.
COFFEE CLUB GARDEN CITY
We have been lucky enough to secure a donation from Coffee Club Garden City. Every time you purchase a full price
item they will give Ardross P&C 10% cash back.
Ask for your receipt to be placed in the special ‘Ardross Primary School’ tin and every 3 months we will receive 10% of the
total sales. This is a special agreement with Coffee Club Garden City and will not be available at any other Coffee Club.
SPORTS DAY CARNIVAL CAKE STALL
A big THANKYOU to all the gorgeous parents who baked and cooked the scrumptious goodies we had for sale at our
cake stall. We were a complete sell out this year and we raised well over $1,000.00. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
to the amazing parents and grand-parents that came along and help set-up, sell everything then pack up afterwards.
A great day spent with wonderful people who love to help and make every event amazing to be a part of.
