Round 7: UNSW vs Hunters Hill @ DP 21/5/11Last week saw UNSW head north to Newport where mixed results saw the bus head back with 3 wins out of 5 games. In 1st Grade Uni went down by just 2 points despite Hazo crossing for what was possibly his first try ever, unfortunately it was just a liJle too late.
The Boss’ 2nd Grade conNnued their undefeated season with a clinical 38-‐0 victory. In a top of the table clash against Hunters Hill the Twos will have revenge on their minds facing the team that only just beat them in 2010’s Grand Final.
Hunters Hill are the Club Championship leaders and UNSW are only a few hundred points in arrears. Good results all round will quickly close the gap. Every game is important in what could be a season defining round for all grades. Game Nmes are below with duty Nme also shown.

Results vs. Newport: Round 6 14 May 2011
1st Grade UNSW 14 Newport 16Tries : A Hazleton, L WebbCons : L Hinchcliffe 2
3 – Lachie Webb, 2 – Dave Davis, 1 – Liam Hinchcliffe
With memory addled by the bus trip, Ned dropping me on my head mulNple Nmes and the possible rage stroke I had at being disallowed a try, this is what I reckon happened.
Under beauNful condiNons in what must be almost Queensland, Uni found themselves their own worst enemy in a game of almosts.
StarNng slowly is a habit that first grade have to break, with a number of lucky passes going to hand to allow Newport an early lead. Dominance in the scrum and a 25m rolling maul should have handed the advantage to the Uni forwards, but some sloppy ruck defence led to another Newport try. 10-‐0. It wasn't all bad news, with good go-‐forward from the pigs and centers, and the outside backs making meters. So it was an opNmisNc Uni that went to get the half Nme grilling
from Dags.
Full of vim and vigour the second half started with some resolute defence by the Uni boys, under the pump but able to frustrate and shut down the opposiNon so that they resorted to penalNes. In an excellent aJempt to get out of fitness training, Adam decided that 70 minutes was about the right amount of Nme for a rugby game and promptly got carded again. But the fitness of the remaining team members was starNng to come to the fore, with Lachie scoring on what has to be his 112th birthday. The referee was unable to give a try to the rampaging Uni No.4, possibly because he was moving too fast for the human eye to follow. Thanks to all the members of the “Andrew Hazelton Suicide Watch” that banded
together in the afermath to that spectacular bit of ass-‐haJery.
Uni was pressing so strongly that Newport was reduced to Nme stalling tacNcs. Inroads were being made, and Hazo got to clear his 2 ½ year try-‐scoring drought, but as it happened on the last play of the game, the clock defeated the gold comeback. Tommy Watson was so distraught that he tackled a bin...several Nmes.
Huge game against top of the table Hunters Hills on Saturday, so get down and support, as it has been greatly appreciated by all players.

The UNSW 2nd grade side was greeted, at Porter Reserve, with what turned out to be great, dry playing condiNons. A perfect compliment the UNSW 2nd grade sides’ expansive style of play. With a strong contest expected around the breakdown, the coach decided to sNck with the strong pack which had dominated the previous weeks opposiNon St Ives. The decision paid off with dividends, the Nght five dominaNng at both scrum and line out , and the back row covering the first phase well and constantly pressuring Newport’s play makers. In the first half Newport proved that they were no push overs and put up some stern resistance to the UNSW aJack. The UNSW loose forwards were busy around the park providing bone crunching defence
and severely limiNng the opposiNons opNons in aJack. This reduced Newport to a kicking game which only served to provided UNSW’s strong counter aJack with plenty of opportuniNes. And run amuck they did the back 3 of Dobs, Muz and Damo all turning in strong performances. If Newport weren’t being tested out wide they were being cut up in the middle by the inside backs, The Boss leading from the front with a number incisive runs. New halves combinaNon of Dew and Shark have gelled quickly and controlled the game impressively. By the half Nme whistle UNSW were looking the goods using flare and muscle in the first half to go to the break leading 19-‐0.
The first half performance had proved so impressive to the spectators that, Tab sports bemng were offering $18 for anyone looking to back Newport 2nd grade. It wasn’t generous enough, in the second half UNSW conNnued in a similar vein, outplaying them in the middle and outwimng them out
wide. All the while maintaining the brick wall defence which has been the corner stone of their great start to the season, sNll only conceding 11 points in 5 games. Midway through the second half the bonus point was secured this paved the way for the coach to make a number of replacements . The replacements proved to be a valuable aid helping UNSW to run away with the match against an opposiNon who were a lot tougher then the final score of 38-‐0 suggested. The replacement of Dewey allowed Muz to kick what must surely be two of the flukiest sideline conversions ever.
Next week the 2s have their biggest test of the season to date against Hunters Hill in a top of the table clash. Revenge will firmly be on their minds with memories of 2010‘s 6 point Grand Final defeat at the hands of Hunters sNll painfully fresh. JK’s men are hoping for a vocal crowd to support them in a season-‐defining encounter.

As per usual spirits were highamongst the colts on this fine Saturday morning. The boys were excited and keen to make up for a very disappoinNng loss to St Ives the week before.
This intent was evident from kick-‐off with Uni applying the early pressure on the surfies from Newport. It was unlucky that the score was not Npped even further in Uni’s favour afer much Nme spent camped deep in Newport’s territory.
Uni’s set pieces were parNcularly dominant. Line-‐outs were strong afer some good pracNce against 2nd Grade on Thursday night, securing consistent ball on our own throw while also causing significant disrupNon to the home team’s ball on their throws. The scrums were completely one-‐sided with the Uni pack completely humiliaNng the opposiNon. So much so that Newport elected to drop to 14 men on the field and have uncontested scrums rather than face any more insecure scrum ball.
Once the boys from Newport began to get some consistent scrum ball they aJempted a late resurgence with some of their lankier troops breaking some tackles out in the backline. Much to their dismay, the Uni defence held strong, with parNcular thanks to MaJy Lo who had yet another chance to show off his excellent tackling.
Hopefully we can carry this good form back across the bridge to DP for a big match-‐up this weekend against table topping Hunters Hill.
