NEWSLETTER 2 – SEPTEMBER 2017Boondall WetlandsEnvironment CentreKeeping Brisbane clean, green and sustainableI am pleased to release the draft concept plan for the New Boondall Wetlands Environment Centre.

The new centre will be positioned alongside the existing building which has served the community faithfully for more than 20 years.

This centre is part of my commitment to keep Brisbane clean, green and sustainable for our children, and their children to follow.

We now need your input to ensure we create a facility that reflects the values of our community, and one that residents and visitors can be proud of. I encourage you to have your say on this exciting project.

VisionThe goal of this project is to establish a new environmental learning centre to showcase the ecological significance and values of Brisbane’s Boondall Wetlands, and its connection with Moreton Bay.

The new centre will be built at the site of Brisbane City Council’s existing Boondall Wetlands Environment Centre and aims to teach people about the ecological significance of the surrounding wetlands.

Visitors to the new environment centre will be able to:Relax in a natural setting with family and friendsDiscover fascinating insights about the wetlandsLearn about the wetlands in playful and interactive waysBe inspired to explore the wetland trailsCome away with a special appreciation of the wetlands.

Have your say on the draft concept plan at information sessions on Wednesday 4 October and Saturday 7 October 2017.

Share your story

Do you have a story to share about the Boondall Wetlands? Were you at the opening of the existing Boondall Wetlands Environment Centre in 1996? Do you remember walking through the wetlands as a child? Do you have a favourite place to visit or way to enjoy the wetlands?

Send us your memories and photos, which could be included in a display at the new centre.

Access improvements

The existing access road and car park will be upgraded to improve safety and access to the centre. This will include a small increase in car parking spaces and the addition of a dedicated bus drop-off zone and turnaround area.

Keeping Brisbane clean, green and sustainable

Keeping Brisbane clean and green is all about making our city liveable and sustainable for our children, and their children to follow.Remaining Australia’s largest 100% carbon-neutral organisation.Protecting enough bushland and parks to fill more than 13,000 Suncorp Stadiums.Maintaining more than 2000 parks, with more created all the time.Named Australia’s Most Sustainable City 2016.Ensuring Brisbane’s 35% natural habitat stays on track for 40% by 2031.

Draft concept plan

Design requirements

During the concept design phase, the project team has been investigating the technical requirements for the development of the centre to ensure it complies with relevant standards for environmental protection and public safety.

To ensure the least possible impact on vegetation, the new building will be located in the existing cleared area to the north of the existing building.

Given the risk of bushfire in the area, a key focus is to design the centre to ensure public safety and to reduce the risk of damage from bushfire. To achieve this, the density of the vegetation surrounding the new building will need to be reduced with some clearing required. Council will ensure that this is minimised as much as possible.

How to have your say

Community engagement is an important element of this project as it will help guide how the new environment centre is developed. Council would like your feedback on the draft concept plan, particularly around the following topics.Inspiring the community about the ecological significance of the area is an important part of this project. What would you like to learn about our wetlands? Some possible topics of interest include birdlife, animals, different ecosystems, plant species, seasonal changes and Aboriginal use of the area. The new environment centre building provides an opportunity for secure indoor spaces that can incorporate a range of displays, facilities and technologies. What features and amenities would you like to see included? We want to ensure the new environment centre is a place both local residents and visitors to Brisbane can enjoy. What would encourage you to keep coming back to experience the environment centre and wetlands reserves?

There are a number of ways to have your say and provide feedback on the draft concept plan. To find out more or to submit your feedback on the project, you can:
