STOP THE BACK PAIN!

The weather is warming up,which means you’re likelyteeing it up once again! Ifyou took the winter monthsoff, you may experiencelow, middle or upper back

pain from golf-related injuries when you return tothe tee box.

Golf, like other sports, is a game of muscle mem-ory. The repetitive motions of the golf swing cansometimes lead to strains, inflammation and oth-er injuries of the muscles and discs of the spine, which can throw you off your game.

I’m not your expert in golf mechanics, but ifyou’re experiencing any type of back pain after around of golf, there are a few things you can doto alleviate the pain and inflammation:

Before you tee-off, be sure togently stretch your lower, middle, and up-per back, as well as your shoulders andneck. After stretching, take time for a fewpractice swings, making sure to focus onform and biomechanics. With each prac-tice swing, slowly increase the range andspeed until you get to a full extension.

I’ve said it before, but CORESTRENGTH is huge for spine health. Keep-ing those muscles strong reduces the riskof injury as you swing and bend. Pilatescan be particularly effective for corestrengthening at any age or fitness level! It’s also important to remember to do oth-er activities besides golf to avoid the re-petitive injuries from the golf swing. Tryother activities such as walking, running, swimming, cycling, weightlifting, Pilates, yoga, etc.

As youage, you may not be able to put the powerbehind your swing like you once did. Al-tering your swing mechanics and possiblyequipment may also help you alleviateyour pain.

Some back pain needsmedical attention, so always be sure toconsult your physician if you experiencecontinual back pain.

If you need help in the core strengthening de-partment, come try a group or private Pilates ses-sion at The Studio. Start working on your corestrength, flexibility and mobility to improve yourgame and alleviate your pain.

Dave Harmon’s Monthly TipDave Harmon, PGA Professional

Since visualization is an important part of the game, especially near and on the green, and reading theground on the greens is important, standing in thebest place will give the best information on speedand line. Since we are trying to match speed with di-rection in putting and speed is the most importantfactor, standing to the side of the putt will help to seethe pace needed. On an uphill or downhill putt, al-ways look up the slope to the cup not down to give agood view of the break involved.

Choose a spot at the apex of where you think thebreak will happen and aim your putter face to thatmark. When I watch golfers putt, I often see putterfaces aiming at the hole and swinging toward theapex of the putt resulting in poor contact.

Remember, we play to pictures so to help visualizethe correct path that the ball will take, take a few sec-onds to stand in a couple of places to get enough in-formation to make a good decision.

Greens are doing well, and we have been removingBermuda encroachment and replacing with bentgrass sod and or plugs as needed. We continue todeep needle tine and top-dress w/ sand through thewinter months on a monthly basis and this was done2/24/2020, along with a granular fertilizerapplication. All greenside Bunkers have been sifted of pebblesnow for a third time using a smaller screen on theGreenway sand sifter we have borrowed over the lastmonth. Remember when raking, never rake down onthe edges or faces, always rake up so as not to losethe sand on the faces. We have been raising/ leveling all the spray headsaround the bunker complexes. When completed wewill raise/ level irrigation hardware like valve boxes, sprinkler heads, quick couplers and complete somelarger mainline and lateral valve repairs. We had started to paint all the golf courseaccessories on the course. This was slowed waydown due to bunker sand sifting. Now that this iscompleted, we will be picking back up with thesetasks. Another area of winter work will be trimmingas much of the oleander hedges as time allows. Thispast Monday we started on #1 tees. Recently theones left of back tee and behind #11 green werecompleted. Next in line is #12 tees.Getting the pump stations preventativemaintenance accomplished and ready for the newgolfing season, is also scheduled to be completed inFebruary.Next month will be the start of aerification season aswe get the golf course ready for play during thewarm season. We will start with the tees, collars, approaches then greens, fairways & rough to finish itout.

Thank you all for your patience during theseprocesses.

Happy Golfing and see you on the course,

Handicap CommitteeBy Ken Rivera

Remember Equitable Stroke Control or ESC, the systemof posting proper scores based on your handicap? This isa key concept to preserve fairness in all of our competi-tions and even your friendly weekly play with your play-ing partners. The concept remains the same but theprocedure has now changed. The question sometimes arises “What do I post if I don’tfinish a hole?” If you don’t finish a hole because it isembarrassingly high, we fall back to the ESC rules. Butwhat about conceded holes such as in match play?Let’s assume on a specific hole your opponent makes a20 ft birdie putt and you have a 15 footer left for par. Ormaybe your opponent is on the green in regulation on apar five with a one foot putt for birdie and you’re hittingfive from the greenside bunker. In either case, youwould concede the hole to your opponent or, as in thefirst case, the hole is over. What do you mark on yourcard? From the USGA:“If a player starts but does not complete a hole or is

conceded a stroke, he shall record for handicap purpos-es the score he most likely would have made. The mostlikely score consists of the number of strokes alreadytaken, plus, in his best judgment, the number of strokes

that the player would need to complete the hole fromthat position more than half the time.”The key here is “more than half the time”. For many, more than 50% of the time you’ll two putt once on thegreen. For some, you’ll make a 15 foot putt more than50% of the time. This is where “in his best judgment”and the spirit of proper handicap maintenance comesinto play. You are the only one who can make this call asyou know your game better than anyone else. Becauseyou have to concede the hole when someone makes along birdie doesn’t necessarily mean you take an auto-matic par. With this in mind, match play scores can berecorded as if a stroke play round was played. Also, rounds with incomplete holes can be recorded properly. When done, the handicap system will reflect your properindex. The difference is now in the way we calculate the ESChole score. With the foregoing paragraph in mind, themaximum score on any hole is now a “net double bo-gey” for any player of any course handicap. If you arean 18 course handicap and are allow one stroke perhole, your maximum hole score would be a triple bogeyon every hole.Should you have any questions concerning this proce-dure, please feel free to contact me or the pro shop forclarification. Hit ‘em straight!.
