NEWSLETTER July 2015 Woodie of the year Martin Horevoorts Workshop extension Our workshop extension was officially opened on Monday June 29 and a very successful day it was. The Opening was the culmination of a tremendous effort by the Woodies to raise funds, plan the extension, supervise the work and then devote many hours to working bees to fit out the shed to make it a great workshop for all the wood groups in our club. Attending the opening were Amanda Miggins, Community Participation Officer from the Department of Human Services Geelong, Kim Walker representing Lisa Neville Member for Bellarine and Minister for Environment and Climate Change in the Victorian Government, Craig Taylor Branch Manager Bendigo Bank and Councillor Rod McDonald from the City of Greater Geelong and many members of the Bellarine Woodworkers. The extension was financed from the clubs own funds and grants from the Bendigo Bank, the State Government through the Strengthening Mens Sheds Program and the City of Greater Geelong It’s a great facility for Woodworkers on the Bellarine. At our BBQ for the opening of our workshop extensions I had the opportunity to act as guide to several of our visitors from local and state government. When I told them that our woodies pre-date the "Mens Shed Movement" by nearly 20 years, they were amazed at the foresight and continuity of our club. When viewing the quality of the fixtures and fittings and machinery in the workshop they were most complimentary about the quality and the amount of work done by members. They were impressed by the clearly labeled storage facilities and the notices encouraging safe use of the machines. The concrete path to the toilets and disability access to the building got a big tick. Two of the visiting ladies felt that the kitchen area was functional but primitive and typically male (whatever that means, sounds sexist to me), One of them had the temerity to suggest that our increase in female members might cause an upgrade in that area (can't think what they mean). But all told our visitors from the Bendigo bank, State and local Govt., Colac Woodies, were all very complimentary. Well Done, All Denis Plant Denis Plant records his observations

Workshop extension

Our workshop extension was officially opened on Monday June 29 and a very successful day it was. The Opening was the culmination of a tremendous effort by the Woodies to raise funds, plan the extension, supervise the work and then devote many hours to working bees to fit out the shed to make it a great workshop for all the wood groups in our club.

The extension was financed from the clubs own funds and grants from the Bendigo Bank, the State Government through the Strengthening Mens Sheds Program and the City of Greater Geelong

It’s a great facility for Woodworkers on the Bellarine.

Welcome to new members

Tony East

Thanks for the welcome. My name is Tony East. I am retired and live in Drysdale. In my working life I worked for Huntsman Chemicals in West Footscray for 33 years in their Utilities Dept . I also served in the RAN for nine years prior to that. I enjoy caravaning with my wife Julie. I love sport, cricket in particular and music. I joined the club to learn more about woodwork and meet new people.

Merrilyn Lloyd (right)I was born in 1947 at South Camberwell.

I went to school at the South Camberwell Primary School, Canterbury Girls’ High School (as it then was), Stott’s Business College, The Gordon Institute of TAFE and the London College of Music (in Melbourne). I have worked all my working life (except for one day in the travel industry) in legal offices as a secretary.

My husband and I have lived in Clifton Springs for approximately 15 years. We had over the years had holiday homes in Point

Lonsdale and later at Ocean Grove. We just gradually retired here. I do have roots in the area generally as my Great Grandfather, Thomas Henry Widdicombe, had the mill at Portarlington and is buried in the cemetery at Port. My interest in woodworking came from a general interest in everything. I don’t have any previous knowledge of it. When I found that my friend Gil was involved in the group I thought it was a good time to join.

I have a husband who is ill with Multiple Myeloma (a form of blood cancer) and Parkinson’s Disease. Since he became ill I have to do everything around the house and the more I can learn about tools and things, the better. He is also interested in woodworking and I hope that vicariously I can involve him in my woodworking endeavours. He is very incapacitated and can’t move very well. He doesn’t go out unless he really has to.

I am also interested in Gardening, Photography, and Oil Painting but have little time for it at the moment. I am a member of Drysdale Uniting Church.

I would like to thank all the people at the Woodworking Group in the Box Making session who have spent their time helping me.  I am conscious of the fact that they are giving up their time in being able to do their “thing” and I appreciate all their help and friendship. I hope to learn much and contribute to the group.
