Finally, I received the numbers from RI for RI Foundation Annual Giving contributions. Our District contributed $65,000 last year with an average per Rotarian of approxi- mately $48 per member. While I am proud of this contribu- tion, I believe the average per Rotarian should be $100. In or- der to achieve this goal, I ask each club to institute a matching program for the first $50 of each member’s contribution to the Annual Fund. The funding for this program can come from your charitable budget/funds. A simple program such as this will literally double this District’s contribution to the RI Annual Foundation Fund. Remember Rotarians - it is not about the money; it is about what the money can do. Enjoy your summer, and I look forward to seeing you all during my official visits. What You get out of Rotary depends largely on what , and who, you put into it.

    Governor’s message

August is Membership Development Monthby ... DG Jim Gascon, Marcellus RC.

RI President Kalyan Banergie in this month’s Rotarian maga-zine reminds us that August is membership and development month. Here in District 7150 we have a jump start on member-ship development. In July, I met with your Assistant Gover-nors and asked them to go back to the clubs and make sure each club has identified a Membership Retention Chair. Any-one who has heard me speak recently would know that the se-cret to solving the membership decline in this District, and elsewhere for that matter, is retention, retention, retention.

Please, if your club does not have a Retention Chair, I ask that you appoint one for the coming year. Each club member has a responsibility to ensure that the new members to the club are treated with the respect and admiration that they deserve. After all, we fought so hard to bring them to Rotary, we need to fight just as hard to make sure we keep these precious mem-bers by allowing them to achieve their Rotary dream. Make sure to take extra care and to make an extra effort to get your new members involved in projects. Give them a leadership role. This is a sure way to keep that new member.

In my experience, most new members are lost within the first or second year of joining. This is the critical time in their Rotary development and the time we, as long-term members, must find out what will work for that new member.

I have also asked the AG’s to help the club Presidents schedule both a fall and spring event or program for member-ship recruitment. Please schedule your recruitment meetings now so that the District can help you plan and be prepared for your events.

Finally, I received the numbers from RI for RI Foundation Annual Giving contributions. Our District contributed $65,000 last year with an average per Rotarian of approxi-mately $48 per member. While I am proud of this contribu-tion, I believe the average per Rotarian should be $100. In or-der to achieve this goal, I ask each club to institute a matching program for the first $50 of each member’s contribution to the Annual Fund.

ROTARY DISTRICT 7150 MEMBERSHIP AND EXTENSION MONTH AUGUST 2011

    Building Membership

MEMBERSHIP DEVELOPMENTby … Joe McCarthy PDG, Membership Chair [email protected] Last year we asked the question. "How do we Last Year we asked the question. "How do we In-crease Membership" ? This year Rotary is em-phasizing new ways to interact and communi-cate in our communities. We have two Clubs in our District, Marcellus and Oswego who are in a "Pilot Program" for many, many, new ideas. However, MANY Clubs have been success-ful, using the 5 Step "SUGGESTED APPROACH TO RECRUITING NEW MEMBERS", I am ask-ing every Club to try it now! Print it and use it,

unless you have a better approach that is work-ing. July is alway a tough month. Member-ship drops because of inactive members who de-cide not to pay dues. Job changes etc. Now we must get going on this most important chal-lenge. Please be sure that your Membership Chair is active and positive about promoting and publi-cizing your Goal to your Club Members.

If you don't think that your Club can be suc-cessful at recruiting Members, Please take ac-tion! Contact me : [email protected] - 682-5997. or a Team Member : Don Reed - F.M.; Doug Rutan - Skaneateles; Ann Smiley - Bald-winsville. Tony Vennera - Herkimer; Roger Gates - New Hartford; Hank Leo - Oneida. We will be able to help.

    MEMBERSHIP DEVELOPMENTDISTRICT 7150

District Chair; Joe McCarthy ... [email protected] Step Approach for Recruiting New Members

    1. Look for new prospects! Community and Business Leaders, Owners, Managers, Educators, Neigh-bors who live or work in the community. Consider young, active, successful business people. also active, semi or retired men and women.

    2. Invite them to a meeting. ( Club pays for "One Free Lunch" ) Don't ask them to join, until you think that they are a good prospect . Invite them to come to the next meeting and every week.

    3. Fill out a New Member Proposal Form. ( Do not ask them to sign ) Give to the club President or Sec-retary for board Approval.

    4. Arrange a 30 - 40 minute Rotary Information Meeting. Review Rotary Basics, Obligations, Founda-tion, Dues, etc. If they agree to join, have them sign the Proposal. Club Secretary communicate a Publication to members. After 7 days, send Dues notice. ( In the Dues Notice, include a request for a $50 Donation to the Rotary Foundation.) ( Some clubs add $50 making them a Sustaining Member )

    5. Plan a Formal Induction. Invite Spouse or Guest. Present New Member folder. Invite the District Governor and Assistant. Have all Members stand and welcome them.

My hope is that we can get aggressive at Recruiting New Members in your Club as we did in many Clubs last year. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you don't think you can do it.

    Membership Retention

Tips for member retentionby... Arnold R. Grahl Rotary International News - 26 Aug 2010

Traveling together to club pro-jects and creating a variety show as a fundraiser were just a couple of the ideas Rotarians offered during a packed work-shop on member retention at the 2010 RI Convention in Montréal, Québec, Canada.

Mike McGovern, 2009-10 Membership Development and Retention Committee chair and past RI vice president, said the workshop he moderated, "Clos-ing the Back Door," generated fantastic audience participation and produced many valuable ideas for retaining members.

"It moved so quickly, and so many people were able to share their comments, that it was like a prototype of how Rotary

functions ought to be," McGov-ern said. "It was one of those workshops where more seats were filled at the end than at the beginning."

Three panelists – Ron Beaubien, a past RI director and past RI membership com-mittee chair, and Hendreen "Dean" Rohrs and Pete Snider, 2009-10 regional Rotary Inter-national membership coordina-

It Worked for Us - by .... Don Reed, FM Rotary Club - Just wanted to let you know of the success we at the Fayetteville-Manlius Rotary Club have had with the 5-Step recruiting program. Last year we lost 1 member to a relocation and brought in 7 new members, 4 of whom are under 40. It took us awhile to practice the 5-Step and do it by not throwing up on everybody about Rotary and "Service Above Self," to just invite them to lunch, then to come back again on their own dime. Try it, you’ll like it.

tors -- each briefly shared some opening remarks about mem-ber retention. Participants were then asked to turn to a neigh-bor and discuss strategies that had worked in their clubs. Fi-nally, audience members were invited to step up to one of three microphones and share with the entire group.

"We asked them to be brief and to just give their name and club name, no titles," McGov-ern noted. "It worked out well and emphasized that clubs are where it's at. It tied into Rotary making clubs bigger, better, and bolder."

Workshop attendees scram-bled to write down all the ideas for increasing member reten-tion. Download the full list be-low. A sampling includes:• Make Rotary fun.• Travel together to club

meetings and projects – or take a club trip together.

    • Form a hiking fellowship to get active outside of weekly meetings.

    • Go out to Sunday brunch with a group of members.

    • Find out what gets a mem-ber excited about Rotary.

    • Do a hands-on project in-stead of the regular meeting once a month.

    • Identify a signature project -- one the club is known for throughout the community.

    • Create a mentor committee, and offer three-year men-toring to new members.

    • Develop a buddy system, pairing up a new member with an existing member.

    • Designate someone to round up members who haven't participated in a while and drive them to the club's meetings or events.

    • Plan outings to involve new Rotarians and their families.

    • Invite families to club meet-ings.

    • Promote the practice of younger members introduc-ing other younger members.

    • Organize a New Generations club to target younger pro-fessionals.Improving member recruit-

ment and retention is one of the goals outlined in the RI Strategic Plan.

    Moravia Website Greeting

    A New Year - A New Faceby ... Valerie Collins, Presidenthttp://www.moraviarotary.org/

Every year in the Rotary world, we have a new theme. This

year's theme, "Reach within to embrace humanity", was cho-sen by Rotary Internation-al President, Kalyan Banerjee, to be our focus for the 2011-2012 Rotary year, beginning 1 July 2011.

This theme calls us as Ro-tarians and citizens of our communities, our nation, and our world, to find the strength within ourselves to help us "en-circle the world and embrace humanity". Embracing human-ity may be as simple as planting vegetables to feed a hungry neighbor or as ambitious as drilling a well in Nigeria to pro-vide a village with clean water.

The beauty of Rotary lies in the ability of each member to get involved in making their world a better place. Even the smallest Rotary club can make a large impact locally and globally. With 1.2 million Ro-tarians around the world work-ing together to improve their world, magnificent things can happen!

The 'new face' of Rotary adds an avenue of service called "New Generations Service". Moravia Rotary has embraced this new face of Rotary by the addition of several young pro-fessionals to our club in the last year. Our club has been ener-gized by the enthusiasm and new perspective these members have brought to us.

If you have ever wondered what Rotary is about, please take a few minutes to look over our site. Browse our photo al-b u m s a n d r e a d o u r newsletters. See for yourself how much fun and fellowship we have as we work to live out Rotary's motto of Service Above Self. If you like what you see, drop us a line on the contact form or feel free to attend a meeting as our guest.

    A New Rotary Year

Changes you should knowRotary International News -- 29 June 2011

A new Rotary year is set to be-gin, and with it several pro-grams aimed at supporting and strengthening clubs and dis-tricts. In addition, a fresh slate of leaders will take over at the club, district, and international level.

Kalyan Banerjee, of the Ro-tary Club of Vapi, Gujarat, In-dia, will become Rotary's 101st president, and the third from India, on 1 July. Read a profile of Banerjee from The Rotarian. William B. Boyd, of the Rotary Club of Pakuranga, Auckland, New Zealand, will take over as Rotary Foundation trustee chair.

John Hewko will become Rotary International’s 12th general secretary on 1 July. He has said his priorities include improving Rotarians’ connec-tions with the Secretariat and increasing awareness about what the Secretariat can offer. Download Hewko's speech from the 2011 RI Convention. Other changes include: • Four pilot programs will be-

gin 1 July, designed to im-prove recruitment and reten-tion, allow for flexibility in club operations and structure,

and give clubs an opportunity to explore new and innova-tive ways to promote member diversity -- all goals of the RI Strategic Plan. For each of three pilot programs – corpo-rate member, associate member, and innovative and flexible Rotary club -- 200 clubs have been selected to participate, and about 125 will take part in a satellite club pilot program. Learn more.

    • The Changemaker Award will accompany the Presidential Citation during the 2011-12 Rotary year. The award will encourage Rotarians to focus on change and will recognize clubs that make an extraordi-nary impact through their work in the Avenues of Serv-ice. Learn more.

    • The World Community Serv-ice and Rotary Volunteers programs will be phased out as of 30 June, replaced by a new model designed to ex-pand the resources available to clubs for connecting and partnering with one another. The RI Board approved a shift to a resource and sup-port model for RI programs to reinforce the priorities and goals of the RI Strategic Plan.

    • Efforts to enhance Rotary’s public image will be under-taken by 49 Rotary public image coordinators (RPICs) working in partnership with their zone’s RI director, re-gional Rotary Foundation coordinator, Rotary coordi-nator, and district governors. RPICs, who are selected by the RI president or Rotary Foundation trustee chair, have professional expertise in public relations, journalism, or communications and will help support the RI Strategic Plan by conveying effective public relations practices to district leaders.

    • The Rotar ian magazine launches its digital edition with the July issue. Subscrib-ers can now choose to receive either the print or digital edi-tion, or both. This would be a good time to buy a subscrip-tion for your Interact or Ro-taract club, to inspire them with Rotary’s breadth. Learn more.

    • Rotary clubs’ annual per cap-ita dues to Rotary Interna-tional will increase to US$51 in 2011-12. The 2010 Council on Legislation also set dues at $52 for 2012-13 and $53 for 2013-14.

Sea Scouts Ship 23by ... John Paddock

As the proud BSA Chartered Organization for Skaneateles Area Sea Scouts Ship 23, Skaneateles Sunrise Rotary Club congratulates the Ship for its successful completion of its boat-building project. The pro-j e c t c u l m i n a t e d i n t h e "Builder's Sea Trials" held July 25th and 26th on Skaneateles Lake despite threatening clouds and a challenging sea state. See picture below (cour-tesy of John Paddock).

Sea Scouts Gary Mucci (at the helm) and Greg Huba underway on a gray morning and choppy Skaneateles Lake.

SSS 23's replica 1950's era Chris Craft Racing Pram, con-structed from a James Craft kit provided through the auspices of the Antique & Classic Boat Society - Finger Lakes Chapter, was a focal point of the Skaneateles Sea Scouts Ship 23 display during the Skaneateles Antique & Classic Boat Show on July 29-31st.

ACBS-FLC proposed SSS-23's wooden boat-building pro-ject several years ago through its Youth Development Pro-gram chaired by Arnold Ru-benstein. FLC graciously do-nated the James Craft kit, i.e. the basic materials and instruc-tions, and helped SSS 23 initi-ate the pram construction by the Sea Scouts. Work began during the 2008 Skaneateles Antique & Classic Boat Show show in an intense two-day kickoff under the guidance of ACBS Youth Development Pro-

gram Chair and mentor Cap-tain Jim Shotwell.

The pram project proved to be a significant instructional boat-building experience for the teenage Sea Scouts, guided by SSS 23 Adult Advisor Chris Legg, a retired Navy Com-mander. SSS 23 is appreciative and indebted to many for sup-port. Of special note, John Menapace provided storage space dur ing the winter months and a work area in the spring. John Jablonski, The Sailboat Shop staff, and David Couch provided stain, paint, varnish and expertise. Arnold Rubenstein located the 1955 Evinrude 7.5 HP outboard mo-tor and associated fuel tank; Brad Wirth, Wirth Automotive, repaired the outboard and en-sured it runs smoothly for the Sea Scouts.

Thanks to such essential contributions and its own hands-on efforts, Sea Scouts Ship 23 looks forward to oper-ating its racing pram, a unique resource for motor-boating complementing its sailboating and other activities, safely and responsibly on the Lake this summer.

She garnered one of the top prizes from the event : a Sammy Sailfish given to the participant who showed great leadership. Kaleigh told the club that the RYLA partici-pants were challenged mentally and physically. Kaleigh said they were given challenges that tested their ability to rise above divergent strong opinions, find

common ground, and thus a workable solution. Washing-ton D.C. : take note!! Kaleigh will be the Oswego Interact in-coming President. Sara Gosek the previous President was also a RYLA graduate. The weekend of July 29-30 three of your Foundation committee, Ward Vuillemot, Major Donor chair, PJ Scott, District Simplified Grant chair

and myself attended a Zone Leadership Assembly in Syra-cuse for our four UpState New York Districts. The assembly was led by our Rotary Interna-tional Director, Betsy Demaray and included presenters/facilitators from Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York. We were updated on our eradicate Polio campaign, which will conclude when polio is eradicated. The good news is the outbreak in the Congo dur-ing 2010 of 441 cases had their last reported case January 22, 2011 and Tajikistan that had an outbreak of 457 cases in 2010 has had no new reported cases in over one year (July 4, 2010 last reported case).

We were updated on the Fu-ture Vision program for our Foundation that will be effec-tive in our District July 1, 2013. This will be an exciting time and you Foundation Commit-tee is getting prepared to im-plement.

The RLI Philosophy isby ... PJ Scott, PDG, RLI Faculty

    “Having leadership skills does not a lone assure good Ro-tary leadership. An effective Ro-t a r y l e a d e r m u s t A L S O h a v e R o t a r y knowledge, perspective about where Rotary has been, where it is now going and a vision of what Rotary can be.”

The Rotary Leadership In-stitute (RLI) is a series of fast-paced, interactive, one-day courses offered to improve a Rotarian's leadership skills and increase their base of knowl-edge in Rotary.

Courses are fun, topical, in-teractive, and geared toward active business and profes-sional persons who want to be

more effectual leaders in their vocation and club and become more knowledgeable Rotari-ans.

Rotary Clubs are encour-aged to select and sponsor at least two candidates for RLI annually. RLI students will return to their club with en-thusiasm, new contacts, fresh ideas, an increased under-standing of their potential as Rotarians, and valuable skills impacting their potential lead-ership in their club or district.

RLI of Northeast America includes the northeastern part of the USA and Bermuda. Lo-cations and Dates for upcom-ing RLI events are conven-iently planned throughout this area on various dates through-out the 2011-2012 Rotary year and are encouraged to attend RLI events at any of these lo-cations. The Calendar of Courses, Registration and Payment Methods can be found at http://www.rlinea.com/Calendar.htm (also see page 17 below)

Sending Rotarians to these courses is an investment in the future of your club. The re-sponses of Rotarians in our district who have completed the Institute’s study have been nothing but positive. The benefits to our clubs and dis-trict have been many.

There are space limitations for the Institute, so please reg-ister early.

    Paul Harris said

1946 on World Peace"The Rotary way works! But Rotary has no patent on it, for it is but the Golden Rule in ac-tion. Any person, any nation, can apply it by displacing negative hatred and fear with goodwill based upon under-standing. Peace among nations is not impossible of attain-ment; they can find peace if they will."

James Kiki from Sudan (one of the Lost Boys) brought the ex-citement and celebration of the new South Sudan to the Oswego Rotary club. However, it was his true story, told in the most sincere manner that ab-solutely touched the hearts of the Oswego Rotarians. James is sponsored by the Oswego Rotary club to help in his at-tendance at SUNY Oswego. The Oswego club was referred to James through the ONPoint program run by Ginny Dona-

hue. The program assists col-lege students with basic neces-sities to make their academic year successful. Oswego Ro-tarians went over and above with items and funds collected for James-without meeting him first. Upon meeting James, Oswego Rotarians have taken him into our hearts and welcomed him into our Rotary family.

    Polio Eradication

Polio D7150 Update - July 28, 2011by ... Michael Occhipinti PDG 1985-1986, Rome RC, D7150 Polio Eradication Char,

I would like to thank the clubs for reaching and surpassing our goal of $50,000 for our 2010-2011 year. We now need to raise $45,078.82 to meet our challenging goal of $200,000.00. We can’t let our guard down as we need to complete our 2011-20012 goal of $50,000 which will end on June 30th 2012. Let’s make this a banner year where we can complete and eradicate polio forever. Rotary International so far has reported $177 million dollars as of July 28, 2011 towards the $200 million dollar challenge given us by the Bill and Malinda Gates Foundation.

Polio this week—Friday July 29th 20111. On Friday one year will have passed since the last case in Kenya, making the end of polio outbreak in the

Horn of Africa which lasted from 2008 to 2009 and paralysed 101 children.2. Outbreaks following importation account for 503 cases to date this year, whereas endemic countries report

73 cases.3. Over 75% of global cases this year are as a result of the outbreak in Tajikistan following importation of

virus of Indian orign, foreshadowing the impact of not stopping polio in the endemic areas.
