Dear Parents and Caregivers Hope you had a wonderful; weekend and were able to enjoy the fine weather we have been having. A little sun certainly makes watching children’s sport more pleasant than cold and rain. Our Quiz Night went off with a huge bang on Saturday night. Sherree Horton and the incredible team from the PTA created a wonderful event with lots of fun being had by everyone. This was our first time in TECT Pongakawa – THE Action Centre and I think it really suited the occasion. The transformation from gymnasium to a black and white themed night was spectacular and even though the team I was in didn’t win it was an awesome night to be a part of. Quiz Nights are more than a fundraiser (although ours is marvellous at doing this) it is a time for the community to come together, have a few laughs and let their collective hair down. Well done to all who contributed in any way whether a helper or organiser, a team member or sponsor. Thank you for being part of our annual Pongakawa event. Opting in: This is a phrase your child will hear often at school and it is one which came up in a recent conversation with a police youth aide officer. He is finding teenagers who refuse to do as they are asked by parents, the school or even the police are certainly on the rise. As a dad myself I think as parents we need to be careful allowing our children the option of not doing something because they don’t feel like it or letting them make a decision which may have a long term ramification. Letting your child not do cross country for example might not seem much but trust me it sows the seed of opting out and as a child gets older of refusing point blank to do as they are told. Cross country is a part of the physed curriculum in the same way geometry is part of the mathematics one and we don’t allow our youngsters to give that a miss. Our children won’t always agree with the choices we make for them but as parents we have the responsibility to do what we believe is right, is best for them and it is these things which will provide the grounding and guidelines for their later life. Being firm and not bowing at times to their pressure or that of others might feel tough at the time but it will make your life easier as they grow up as well as giving them backbone and boundaries. Building work: We have two projects beginning at the start of the next Holiday break. Rooms 1 – 4 will be extensively modified to create new innovative learning spaces for the Jiddles and the fencing around the school will be completely re done. Tenders for both these projects have been let and the Education Ministry has approved all funding. There will no doubt be some challenges as these things get underway but I will try to keep you updated and alert you to parking or other issues which may have an impact on you or your children. Have a fantastic week. Yours in teaching Craig Haggo, Principal

Enviro News Tip of the week:
Did you know that there are only 63 Maui Dolphins left in NZ? These precious animals are unique to New Zealand – but with only a tiny number surviving, they’re in big trouble. How can we help? Our Enviro group is holding a COIN TRAIL tomorrow Tuesday 13th June to help fund raise for WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature). We are asking for your child to donate a gold coin to help this cause. Go to www.wwf.org.nz/maui.dolphin/ for more information about The Maui Dolphin Challenge. Let's try and make a difference.
