Resource Smart Accreditation

We were delighted to learn last week that the school has now been accredited with its second star as part of the

Resource Smart Sustainability framework. The two stars have been awarded as a result of the school successfully

meeting the requirements of the Core Module and Waste Module. We are now well on our way to becoming a five

star accredited school!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Lauren McGill (Sustainability Coordinator) and the work of the

Sustainability Key Reference Group for their ongoing work in this important area.

P/T/S Conferences: - Thanks

It was terrific to see so many students and parents participating in P/T/S conferences last Monday. Over the

course of the two evenings (including Wednesday’s bookings), approximately 700 conferences will be conducted

across the school. We are very grateful for the high level of participation in these conferences. Our students are

able to sense the importance attributed to their learning when parents & teachers work closely together to support

and guide them. We hope that the conferences enabled our students to showcase aspects of their work, provide

you with greater clarity regarding the Mid-Year Report and also chart a clear direction for future Learning Goals

over the remainder of the year.

Parent Volunteers on Excursions

We didn’t seem to have a day go by last week, where year levels weren’t participating in excursions to enrich their

classroom learning. These excursions are a wonderful stimulus, particularly for our Shared Inquiry each term. We

are so fortunate to have parent helpers who generously give up their time to attend these excursions. Thank you

to all of those parents who assisted on one of our excursions last week. Without parent help, these excursions

would certainly not be viable.

In further support of parental help when on an excursion, I thought I would just take a minute in this week’s

newsletter to clarify our expectations of parents who are able to assist:

Firstly, check that your Working With Children Card is still current. (Please ensure the main office has a

copy).

Liaise with the classroom teacher prior to the excursion to clarify the level of support needed. (General

participation, in charge of a group/activity etc.).

Try to quickly learn the names of the students in the group that you have been assigned (if your child

happens to be in this same group, be conscious of sharing your support equitably with all students in the

group).

If by chance a child requires first aid or appears unwell, please liaise directly with the relevant classroom

teacher.

If possible, please try to refrain from answering mobile phone calls, which could potentially distract you from

your duty of care.

We ask that parents do not purchase food or gifts for their group, or their own child/ren. (Whilst we

understand the generous intention of this, it can create tensions with other students/groups who may feel

that they have ‘been overlooked’).

Be conscious that any photography on the day must only be of group shots. (No individual close up shots

can be taken of students as per our Privacy Policy.)

We hope this brief list helps to clarify the role of parents on excursions. The general rule of thumb however is that

if you are ever unsure about a situation when on an excursion, simply liaise with the classroom teacher so that this

matter can be discussed.

Principal Contract Renewal

Where did the last five years go? It’s hard to believe that I started my first five year contract at Willy North in mid-

2012. At the completion of a contract renewal process that unfolded last term, I was delighted to learn that my

contract had been extended for another five years. To be Principal of such a great school is certainly a privilege

and I am excited to be given the opportunity to lead the school for a further five years as we continue to forge a

learning environment characterised by innovation and excellence.

Lunch orders using the Qkr APP began today Wednesday 2nd

August.

Please note that lunch orders must be placed by 9:15am on Wednesday, Thursday or

Friday, to ensure they are included in the download each day.

Reading & Writing Together Is Magic (RWTIM)

I hope all families have Thursday 24th August (from 6:30pm – 7:15pm) marked in the calendar for the upcoming

RWTIM program. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to showcase their writing talents to the school

community. In organising the evening, all students will be clustered into multi-age groupings from Foundation to

Year 6. As a result of these Foundation to Year 6 groupings, we cannot utilise our Compass platform for the

bookings. The flyer below has all the details for how to book your child/ren’s participation in this event.

Enjoy the rest of the week,

Jim Cahill—Principal

School Banking School banking day is Wednesday.

Don’t forget to send in your child’s bank book.

Student Safety

Please take the time to regularly remind your child/ren about safety, especially when going to and from school. Here are the important points to mention:

Do not to talk to strangers and never accept a ride from a stranger, or accept lollies or gifts from a stranger.

Immediately report any issue or problem you may have when going to or from school, to your mum and dad, or to your teacher, the Principal, Assistant Principal or office staff.

Always get permission from mum or dad before going to play with a friend after school and always let mum and dad know where you will be and what time you will be home.

We advise that, wherever possible, children should travel to or from school with an adult or with their friends, rather than travel alone.

Early Release

All children collected from school before 3.30pm must be signed out at the Office. Parents will be handed an ‘Early Release Pass’ to hand to the supervising teacher. If a child is signed out at Recess or Lunch time, the Office staff will call the child to the Office and then ensure the Early Release Pass is given to the supervising teacher.

Bikes & Scooters Many children ride bikes and scooters to school each day. All bikes and scooters must be locked up in either the Bike or Scooter Enclosure to prevent theft. Please ensure your child has a chain and a lock.

All children who ride a bike or scooter must wear a helmet which is a requirement by the Government. The school regularly reminds all children about wearing helmets for their safety.

All bikes, scooters, skateboards, ribstic and helmets must be labelled, with your child’s name and class. Children are reminded they must walk their bike, scooter, skateboard or ribstic to and from the school gates. No bikes are to be brought through the school buildings and we request, where possible, that scooters are also not walked through the building.

Working With Children Cards Cardholders who are required to renew their WWCC will no longer need to go to Australia Post to lodge a paper form and present their current card. Cardholders will go to the WWCC website to complete their renewal application online and, if applying for an Employee Check, pay the fee using a credit card when using the online renewal process, cardholders will be notified by SMS, letter or email 28 days before their WWCC is due to expire. It is important for cardholders to keep their contact details up to date so that they receive this important reminder.

After receiving a notification, individuals continuing to do child-related work should go to MyCheck on the WWCC website and apply to renew their check. Cardholders will be asked to register with MyCheck if they have not already done so. Once logged in to MyCheck, cardholders will be prompted to confirm or update their personal contact and work details, complete the online form and, if applying for an Employee Check, pay the non-refundable $102.70 fee. More information: an FAQ guide to online renewals will be

available in 'Publications' under 'Resources' on the WWC website,

or contact the Customer Support Line on 1300 652 879 8.30am –

Dad’s Footy Carnival

One of the Foundation A dads (Scott) is looking to coordinate a Willy North PS team to compete in the Dad’s Footy Carnival – if you’re keen, read on!

I'm keen to get a Williamstown North PS (WNPS) Footy Team together, to take part in the 2017 Dad’s Footy Carnival to be held on Saturday, 2nd September at Murphy Reserve in Port Melbourne. More information is below, otherwise check out the website with images of a recent "friendly" match between Port Melbourne PS and Brighton PS. http://dadsfooty.com.au

This is a great initiative for the WNPS Dads and families to get to know each other, and for the schools involved.

Footy Format:

The day will comprise a lightning-premiership style comp between the Dads of 12 schools.

Games will start from around midday with the footy concluding with a final around 5.00pm.

Games will be a total of 2 x 10 minute halves with each team playing around 4 or 5 games (precise fixture to be locked down), culminating in a final between the two best teams in the comp.

Each team will field 16 on the field so to field a team confidently, you’ll need around 20+ interested Dads

Games are played according to modified Masters Rules, which eliminates many of the injuries that might come from playing normal rules

Organising your own trainers and supplying a few volunteer goal umpires / boundary umpires if possible

Family friendly Format

Following the awards (including the award of the prestigious Sculley Cup to the winning team), there will be a range of entertainment, including multiple local bands and an impressive fireworks display.

On the day, food and drinks (including alcohol) are available for purchase as well as a kids play area coordinated by an accredited child minding service (like Camp Australia). There’s lot of things for the Mums and kids to do during the day, including a couple of champagne bars for the Mums.

Cost—$0 charge for teams entry and there’s also no gate entry. Port Melbourne PS organise the day and pay the costs, with those costs paid out of funds raised for the day (which come from food and drink sales). Any profit PMPS make on that day goes towards the school with support for local programs such as an anti-bullying program for the community (which they are supporting this year).

Fundraising (for WNPS) - Each school will have an opportunity to run a raffle etc. on the day

Confirmed Teams

How to get involved

If you are ready to sign up straight away, email Scott at [email protected]

WNPS Dads can get together one Sunday for a quick training session (followed by a beer for anyone interested) - Date to be confirmed.

Prior to the Carnival, there's an all-schools training event so we get to know the Dads from other schools.

Please let me know if you have any questions or are otherwise happy to share some of this in the newsletter.

Many thanks

Scott (Oscar from Foundation A Dad)
