With the impending Musical Performance forefront in my mind, I started to reflect on the reasons why a small group of adults have volunteered 100’s of hours of their spare time to invest in such a project.

Of course I came up with the very important response of doing God’s work, serving students and their families, using God given gifts and talents and because it is so much fun!

Volunteering also helps build community and transform lives. Whether a volunteer is mentoring a child, painting a backdrop or simply being there for someone to say their lines to, they make a real difference to the community they are serving.

By volunteering a person gets to work alongside people from all walks of life with different personalities, skill sets, backgrounds, interests, careers and stories - all united by the desire to do all the good they can! Connecting with people who share the same passion for a cause, a project or social issue creates a path to developing strong relationships with others.

Volunteering can take a person outside their comfort zone, unveiling strengths they never knew existed and boosting their confidence and self-esteem. Having new experiences can help a person discover a new passion, and working alongside experts in the field will help a person gain the skills and contacts to pursue that passion.

Volunteering exposes a person to a variety of skill sets and experiences that they can turn into transferable skills, making them a more versatile, attractive employee.

There are many opportunities at Marrara Christian College to which the wider Marrara Community can volunteer their time and skills. The Musical is one opportunity. During Term 2, 3 and 4 many more will be evident. I encourage you to be alert, step out of your comfort zone and volunteer. You will be blessed.

Thank you to all the staff, parents, grandparents and carers who have become involved with the musical. You are greatly needed and appreciated.

Please scroll down to see photos of our students preparing for the Musical performance tomorrow.

Friday 19th May: Keep the date free!

Please keep the date clear in your diaries so you too can be involved in this great College community event. The Carnival, for all students from Years 1 to 12, is held at Casuarina Swimming Pool. Parents are very welcome and encouraged to attend.

Please note:

• Some assistance may be needed for our Year 1/2 Carnival that is happening in the Learner’s Pool.• Primary students in Years 3 to 6 will be receiving an information letter. Please complete the return slip and return it to your child’s

teacher.• As this is a normal school day, attendance at our Carnival is compulsory for all students (with the exception of Preschool and

Transition).• There will be no supervision available at school.

Kirsty Wall (Year 9) & Amanda Johnson (Year 9) were selected to represent Northern Territory State Hockey under 15 girls team this year.

They have been selected for the last 4 years to play state hockey.

This year they played in Sydney. They lost 2 games, drew 2 games and won one game and it was a great effort by all the NT girls.

Well done girls!

Hannah Nawirridj (Year 5) has qualified for the Australian Team Future Squad (Gymnastics). The training camp is held in Canberra at the AIS.

It is an exciting achievement because Hannah attended the TF Camp in November 2016 as an “extra”. Since then she has qualified in her own right to earn a place on the Squad.

She is the first gymnast from the NT to achieve this placement. Well done Hannah!

MCC Swimming Carnival is coming soon...

Congratulations Hannah!

Congratulations Kirsty & Amanda!

Every year, each student in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 sit a NAPLAN test. These tests go over three days; Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of next week. By the time you get to the end of Year 9, most of you would have done this test 4 times over the years.

The four tests are:

Language Conventions (spelling, punctuation, grammar)

Writing

Reading

Numeracy/Mathematics

Before you take this test, it is really important for parents and students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 to consider and remember the following points:

This test collects data from students in your year level all across the country. Among other things, it helps us to see how children in WA and Tasmania are going compared to how children in NT, QLD and other states are travelling in their education. It also helps us see how you continue to grow from the last time you did the test.

Because of this, it is important that everyone has the same conditions to do these tests. This is why the tables are changed around and your teacher has to read from a book to give you the instructions.

It’s important that you give each of the tests a good go. That means making sure you have a good night’s sleep and a good breakfast. But these tests don’t test everything about you. They don’t test how kind you are or how generous or considerate you are to your classmates. They don’t show how you like to serve others and show compassion towards those around you. And they don’t test how talented you are at sport, music, dance or art. All of these things are important and we do all of these things at Marrara because we know that each of you has God-given gifts and abilities and we love to give you opportunities to shine in these.

Your teachers know and care for who you are. They watch you grow and continue to guide you.

So when you do your NAPLAN test, come prepared to do your best, but remember this is just a little glimpse into a bit about what you can do in those areas. And before, during and after NAPLAN, we will continue to learn and grow and explore the gifts God has given us - across all areas of our learning!

NAPLAN Testing

Hi, my name is Nat Dungey.

I have the privilege of being a Year 10 PCG, English, HaSS and PLP teacher as well as teaching the brand new Stage 2 subject of Society and Culture.

I am so excited about joining the Marrara Christian College team and particularly journeying with the Senior School students in their final years! I have been living and working on Groote Eylandt for the past 2 years where I enjoyed the wonderful island lifestyle of fishing and four-wheel driving.

I have 3 busy boys who also started at Marrara this year and we are all amazed at the kindness and warmth of the Marrara College community in welcoming us here.

Introducing Mrs Nat Dungey
