From The Principal (continued)

Celebrations continued at our Mercy Day stalls and sideshows today. Students and their families put so much effort into preparing for this day and the funds we raise support many Mercy Works in Adelaide. The Year 12 students who attended a recent Vinnies Winter Sleepout at school were keen to support the latest project undertaken by Vinnies, a Women’s Crisis Centre. Some of the funds raised on Mercy Day will help to furnish this centre, which houses women seeking refuge in emergencies.

The recently appointed SA Commissioner for Children and Young People, Helen Connolly, met with a group of our Year 7 and Year 11 students last week as part of her Listening Tour. The letter I received after the visit captured some lovely reflections on our students: “You should be very proud of the students who attended. They were great ambassadors for the school and the Mercy tradition, displaying a commitment to justice and to making a difference. They also showed great maturity, insight and openness. The school environment plays an important role in promoting and supporting these qualities.”

A small group of old scholars gathered in the Cunningham Chapel last Sunday for a liturgy followed by afternoon tea. Many of these women had lived at Angas St as boarders, or attended as day students, in the 1940s and ‘50s, and have very fond memories of their years at the College. There was a lovely sense of friendship, fun and camaraderie that had endured through the years and they enjoyed hearing the young Primary Choir students of today sing for them.

Every teacher at SAC strives to develop the qualities of critical thinking, creativity and collaboration in their students, knowing that these capabilities underpin success in life and learning. We were all very excited to see our two Year 7 Tournament of Minds teams represent the school at Flinders University two weeks ago, where these capabilities were most evident. Both teams competed in the Engineering Mathematics category, and one team was the winner of this section and will represent SA at the Australia Pacific Tournament of Minds competition in October. Congratulations to all the students who took part, to Ms Fimiani and Ms Nuske who coordinated the teams, and to all the teachers who have nurtured the skills to solve these problems effectively over the years.

Year 12 students Clare Peterson and Imogen Lee were recognised at the Archbishop’s Awards for Excellence for Senior Students at the Cathedral last Sunday. Throughout their years at the College, Clare and Imogen have shown an outstanding commitment to our Mercy ethos through their participation in and leadership of the full spectrum of year level and whole school activities. They are wonderful role models for younger students, achieving academic excellence whilst always finding time to serve others, both at school and in the wider community. We congratulate Clare and Imogen. As Term 3 draws to a close, it is hard to believe that our Year 12 students have only two weeks of regular lessons remaining for 2017. It doesn’t seem that long ago that they were gathered for Orientation Day at the start of the year, listening to the inspiring stories of the Class of 2016. The speed with which the years pass by is a reminder to us all to cherish every moment.

JUSTICE & MERCY (JAM)Term 3 has been incredibly busy for JAM and we are not slowing down any time soon. The term started with the Hutt St Centre’s annual 'Walk a Mile in My Boots' event. A group of senior JAM members met in the Adelaide park lands on a cold and grey morning, joining thousands of walkers. The annual walk looks to raise awareness about the reality of homelessness in Adelaide, something that 6,000 people in our city experience on any given night. A highlight of the walk was hearing the Hutt St Centre band playing, just one example of the ways groups can help to provide dignity for those experiencing homelessness. From the 7th to the 19th of August, JAM celebrated Fairtrade fortnight. During this time students ran a Fairtrade Café in the morning, providing ethically sourced hot chocolates and coffees to warm students, parents and teachers. JAM was able to again help in the packing of Birthing Kits. This kits are distributed around the world to help expectant mothers have a safer birth, by providing a few of the essentials to provide a clean and sterile environment. Thank you also to the many classes who took part in packing kits, especially an incredible Year 9 class who packed well over 200 kits! The focus for the rest of the term was on the newly opened St Vincent De Paul Women’s Crisis Centre. This centre provides shelter and care for women and children seeking safety. JAM worked with the school community to collect toiletries including shampoo, conditioner, soap, tooth paste, toothbrushes and deodorant. The Year 12 students took part in the Annual Sleepout, spending the night in the very cold undercroft. This night was filled with activities and chances for reflection. We were able to hear from Penny Ogden, the director of the Vinnie’s Women’s Crisis Centre, who spoke about the impact of domestic violence and the ways that this new 24 service will be able to provide support. The sleepout also allowed our senior students to reflect on their own standing in the world and their own experiences. The night was very special for all staff and students involved.

INDONESIAN IDOL CONCERTOn Wednesday 30 August, the Year 6 students of 6MP along with the Stage 1 and 2 Indonesian students were given the opportunity to attend an Indonesian concert starring Miki J. Michael Jakarimilena was a finalist on Indonesian Idol in 2004. He is currently undertaking an Australian Tour and visiting schools around Australia, where students learn about Indonesian language and culture and sing a range of songs including pop, rock, reggae and hip-hop styled music. During the concert, Michael sang and taught us several popular Indonesian songs and put a traditional twist on them. We were also able to see some of the dances that coincided with the songs. He interacted with the audience and got members of the audience to sing along with him and this was assisted by displaying the lyrics for us to sing along. He approached certain members of the audience and encouraged them to sing and invited the audience to dance along to the final two songs. It was a great opportunity to put our knowledge of the language from our lessons into practice when singing to the music. This performance was an amazing insight into the cultural aspect of Indonesia and we are all very grateful for the opportunity. Lauren Elborough 10LT & Olivia Burgess 10JB

During the second half of Term 3, the Reception classes have been participating in a dance unit where they have been learning about space, timing, rhythm and dance sequences. The focus has been on building confidence and expressing themselves through movement using a variety of body parts. Locomotion across the dance floor has also been a major focus. Students have enjoyed participating in themed lessons, character performances, partner dancing and group dancing. For the remainder of the term, students will concentrate on line dances and creating their own basic choreography. MERCY IN ACTIONOn Wednesday of Week 8, 11TC decided to hold a fundraising day for beyondblue, a website that equips everyone in Australia with the knowledge and skills to protect their own mental health. Anxiety and depression are such a big issue with the youth of today and the class felt that this would be an excellent organisation to raise awareness for and to support. Not only did they cook and supply a large portion of the school with a perfectly cooked sausage or veggie patty, they also created a banner to which students could attach a butterfly to show support for those with anxiety or depression. It was such a team effort and the class should be very proud of their achievements, raising over $800 for beyondblue. Well done 11TC; this is showing Mercy In Action.

CHOOSEMATHS GEM DayA group of Year 10 girls attended a Girls Enjoy Maths Day (GEM) at the Adelaide University. The day consisted of a mixture of workshops and listening to guest speakers who were either studying maths at the university or who were in the work force in maths-based careers. One of the speakers works as a Bioinormatician at the centre for Cancer biology. She has worked in a variety of fields incorporating maths such as digital marketing, string theory and ecology. Another speaker works as a meteorologist at the Bureau of Meteorology and previously she worked as a cryptographer, involved in code breaking. One of the speakers who is currently studying at the University spoke about statistics in social media looking at 'Big Data' which seems to be a growth area. The workshops involved 3D and 4D geometry, working with Pythagoras theorem, Pascal’s triangle and looking at water gauges. The girls thoroughly enjoyed the day and found inspiration in listening to women who use maths in their work.

The GEM day event was an eye-opening and inspirational experience. It allowed myself along with several other Year 10 students to shift our minds in order to think critically. We had the opportunity to develop our confidence to enable us to ask questions, participate in workshops and provide input when solving challenging problems.I enjoyed learning about the endless careers that involve mathematics. The presentations and workshops emphasised the importance of mathematics in our everyday lives, especially as we are developing new technologies for future generations. The experience has enabled me to acknowledge that humans are still continuing to discover new mind blowing aspects of the subject. Overall, the GEM day event has greatly enhanced my love for the subject. Maya Murali 10LT

STUDENT REFLECTION

MUSIC NEWS!

The Catholic Schools Music Festival supports music arts education in our schools providing an outlet for young people to perform in a professional setting. 2017 was a year like no other. This year the Catholic Schools Music Festival was held over two nights at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre on Tuesday 19 September and Wednesday 20 September. During the festival, over 2000 students from Catholic schools around the state performed to create this wonderful event. This year at the Festival, St Aloysius College had 39 students representing our school in the Festival Choir. The journey to the stage started in term one with an audition process. Then came the learning, the focus, the lunchtime practices, the personal effort, the teamwork, the excitement of the combined rehearsals and the exhilaration of performing as part of a 700 student choir on the stage of the Entertainment Centre. In addition to the choir, Emily Crocker 7SS was successful in her audition and performed a solo on both nights of the festival.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS MUSIC FESTIVAL 2017

As well as the magnificent performance by the CSMF Choir, students Rachel Nicholson 10SB (cello) and Kirsty Rivera 8SP (violin) performed with the Festival string ensemble. This ensembles consisted of selected students from Catholic schools all around South Australia. The girls attended multiple rehearsals, sound checks and performed on both evenings. The St Aloysius College’s Stage Band also had the pleasure of entertaining audience members as they arrived at the Centre. The girls thoroughly enjoyed the experience and appreciated the support from families and friends on the night. It was so great to see so many St Aloysius students involved in this year’s Catholic Schools Music, a credit to all their hard work and dedication.

SECONDARY SPORT CHANCERY LANE - MONTESSORI PRE-SCHOOL

Recently, a group of Chancery Lane children went on an excursion to Kuitpo Forest as an extension from our camp fire experience and fire safety education at Preschool. They enjoyed the exploration of the forest and nature play, navigating the streams as they balanced on the logs and rocks, climbing the trees, exploring the root systems of fallen trees and the many muddy puddles. The children also had a great time working as a team to search for tree branches to build their very own hut and of course, roast some marshmallows by the campfire! All these wonderful experiences have provided the children with opportunities to develop life-long skills such as team work, risk taking and problem solving in a natural environment.
