I want to be one of the first to wish you all a Happy New Year.
2019 has been a very fulfilling year for BEFA.
We expect by January 1, 2020 to have flown 6000+
flying hours at BEFA.
We have conducted TBO’s on four aircraft during
2019. This is also a record for us.
Overall our fleet has been well maintained
accumulating all these hours, including a fleet wide
ADS-B compliance upgrade.
Our float plane repairs and TBO are in the final
phase and should be back on line in January.
Our membership has been steady all year.
As we continue to work with the City of Renton, we are
hoping to complete a new long term lease in 2020. In the interim we are finalizing a ten year addendum to our
current lease which allows for continuous operation at
RNT.
A big thank you goes to our BEFA team - Wes, Diana,
Millicent, and Yvonne - for helping to make 2019 one of the best years at BEFA. The Board and I look forward to
2020 to make it an even better year for all you BEFA
pilots.
BEFA Events & Activities
As your new Vice President I am beginning to plan for the coming year. Please bring any BEFA event or activity

Volunteer Request
BEFA Booth at the Northwest Aviation
Conference February 22nd & 23rd
This year’s annual Northwest Aviation Conference will
be held on February 22nd and 23rd at the Puyallup Fairgrounds. We are looking for volunteers to staff
the BEFA booth, meet and greet fellow aviators.
Please sign up at the office. Thank you!
Ask and ye shall receive. Last month I stated I had
not been able to figure out how to pick up Seattle
Approach/Departure while on the ground. I got an e-mail from Joe Edwards describing an app called
“LiveAtc.net”. The app does cost $3.99 to download to your iPad, but once installed, you can listen to a
number of live ATC communications, Seattle included.
Now you can practice your radio calls in the comfort of your own home. Thanks Joe.
It’s interactions like the one above which have made the last four years so much fun and highly educational.
The diversity of the BEFA membership is special. We’ve got Boeing test pilots, engineers and
machinists, an astronaut, an FAA DPE, airline pilots,
and many other highly knowledgeable people as members. To take advantage of that accumulated
wisdom, all you have to do is ask. Everyone I have met is thrilled to be asked to offer their expertise. I
have received a number of e-mails from members
after some articles I wrote. That’s special. Being a pilot is a learning experience, and being a member of
BEFA is about the relationships that develop from a shared passion.
This is my last article as Safety Officer. Four years
ago, Bob Guthrie called me and asked me to run for the position. I told him no, I wasn’t qualified. That
didn’t deter Bob. He insisted I could learn what I needed to know, and could lean on others within
BEFA. This turned out to be wise advice. Today, I’m a better person and pilot for having done this. It’s
been a pleasure to serve the organization.
Mike Sievers is the new Safety Officer. He’s held the position before. I’ve worked with Mike on the Board,
and have been part of Safety Boards he’s presided over. I leave you in good hands.
Thank you for your support over the last four years. I
look forward to seeing you on the flight line.
We’ll talk again. Until then, be safe out there.

Requirement to obtain and use a FAA Tracking Number (FTN) prior to taking a FAA Knowledge Test goes into
effect on January 13, 2020.
What is the FTN?
The FTN is a number assigned to you by the FAA that
stays with you throughout the course of your aviation career. Your FTN is assigned to you by the FAA after you
complete your registration in IACRA or will already exist if
you have a previous airman certificate.
What is Changing?
Beginning January 13, 2020, all applicants must establish an FAA Tracking Number (FTN) within IACRA
before taking any FAA airman knowledge test. This
identification number will be printed on the applicant’s Airman Knowledge Test Report (AKTR) in replacement
of the Applicant ID number
How does the FTN process work? What are the
steps?
1. To register for your FTN in IACRA beginning January
13th, applicants will need to visit the IACRA website
https://iacra.faa.gov/IACRA and click the 'Register' link near the top right of IACRA home page.
2. Check the 'Applicant' box, then agree to the Terms of Service and continue.
3. On the IACRA User Profile Information page, enter all
the information.

Changes to FAA Knowledge Testing
From your Operations Manager,
Wes McKechnie
He was a great BEFA
member, CFI, VP on the
BEFA Board of Directors,
and such a good friend to
us all.
It is an understatement
to say he will be dearly
missed personally, and
also professionally.

4. IACRA will display your FTN. Please record your
FTN (it will also be emailed to you) as it will be required later by your instructor and/or certifying
officer.
To read frequently asked questions, go to
https://iacra.faa.gov/IACRA/FAQ.aspx.
5. Once you have your FTN, you will be able to schedule your knowledge test with BEFA by calling
the BEFA office.
FAA Exam Fee
For BEFA members, the exam fee is $130, and will be added to your BEFA account.
Note: As of December 31, 2019, PSI will no longer
honor AOPA Discounts for tests.
Your fellow members continue to pitch in to keep us running smoothly, often saving money in the process.
We thank the following for their recent contribution.
Gary Pipkin for fixing the preheat carts
trickle-charge extensions
Paul Vahey for cleaning the hanger and parts
room, and organizing parts
Gary Pipkin for rigging the planes for the
wind storm
Kevin Chaney for repositioning aircraft
