TFHS NEWSLETTER WEEK 5 TERM 3 2020 COVID 19 UPDATE The Department has released updated COVID-19 guidelines https://education.nsw.gov.au/covid- 19/advice-for-families which were emailed to all parents on this week. There are a number of changes that will impact on students, parents and teachers. The most significant for families is that students with any flu like symptoms are asked to remain home and have a COVID test. It will be important that parents let us know if their children have any COVID symptoms when they notify us that their child is unwell. Any student exhibiting symptoms whilst at school will be sent home and will also be asked to have a test. Before students return to school, the Department of Education now requires that we see the documentation advising of the negative result and record the testing centre the student attended. Students cannot return to school until we have the negative test results, are feeling well and free of symptoms. This can be emailed to the school at: [email protected] NEWSLETTER WEEK 5 TERM 3 2020 PRINCIPAL'S REPORT Rosemary McDowall Another significant change for families is that all non-essential visitors are asked to reframe from entering the school site. Parents can still make appointments for high level welfare and behavioural issues; however, for most concerns, parents are encouraged to phone us or arrange a Zoom interview. We can respond to parents who need to drop off items or pick up their students, but they should call the school and we will meet them in the school car park in order to assist. CONGRATULATIONS YEAR 12 Year 12 students have just finished their Trial HSC Examinations. They are to be congratulated for the mature, responsible way they have approached their studies and their examinations this year. COVID 19 has presented so many challenges for this Year 12 cohort. I am incredibly proud of the way they have responded and sought to solve each problem or barrier as it has arisen. I realise they have faced many disappointments, but in each instance, they have demonstrated strong problem-solving skills, independence and huge resilience. In spite of a very difficult final year at school, they have all the skills and personal qualities to achieve their future goals.

We are committed todoing everything we possibly can to celebrate Year12's completion of school in ways that aremeaningful and memorable for each of them.

SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN 2021-2024We have commenced an evaluation of our 2017 –2020 School Plan and a situational analysis toinform the development of our next four-yearSchool Improvement Plan. Executive and classroomteachers have been analysing relevant data todetermine our strategic directions. The Departmenthas determined several targets for the school innumeracy, reading and wellbeing and one strategicdirection that will focus on student growth andattainment.

The school will determine two strategic directions inconsultation with the community, which will be the

next step in our planning process. We will bepresenting the findings of our situational analysisand a draft of our strategic directions to studentsand parents next term. I encourage parents toattend the P&C meetings and get involved in thediscussions. We are keen to capture the views ofparents, students and the community during ourplanning process.

We are absolutely delighted that ShaheenaAnwar in the English Faculty has beenpermanently appointed to The Forest HighSchool. Shaheena has been a valued member ofthe teaching staff for five years.

National Aboriginal and Torres Strait IslanderChildren's Day (Children's Day) is our national daydedicated to celebrating our children. The Welcome Poles have significant meaningsincorporated in their designs for each of the children.

"These poles are special to us. It is an expression ofour culture and individuality. They show that theschool is a place that accepts our culture and it is ourhonour to be a part of it" - Bailey and Finn

"The Welcome Pole is very special to me because it isour culture. The emu on the black one represents MrPitt, Keeley B. and my totem, so it means a lot to us.We are from Walgett which is the Gamilaroi Tribe" -Georgia

"The colours red and green on my pole representtracks that I have used for the different groupscoming together. The dots on the pole are meetingtracks. the flags in the design are my favourite asthey represent our people" - Paige

"I would like to acknowledge the hardwork and effort that all our students haveput into these Welcome Poles. They havegained a greater understanding of cultureand identity and as a group become closerbecause of it. They are our elders of thetomorrow and are the holders of new andold knowledge that has been passed downfor over 60,000 years! Hold this knowledgeclose to you and don't ever be afraid ofwho you are, seek understanding andspeak up for yourself and our mob.

I would also like to thank Miss Chalonerwho organised this special afternoon andhelped the students put the finishingtouches on the poles along with MrsWalsh. Society By Dashiell Keane

I will not let society place me where it wants to,I live between the cracks, I will not slip through,

I choose my own destiny,The one I want, due to my ability,

If I want to be a mathematician or a lawyer,Who says I have to be an actor and act as Tom Sawyer?

If I’m Irish does that mean I’m drunk? If I’m Christian does that mean I’m a Monk?

If I’m Black does this mean I’m a thug?If I have bad habits does this mean I’m into drugs? If I’m white does this mean I look down on others?

I don’t want by life based on another’s,I choose my own destiny, due to my ability,

On my own accord,Not in society’s discord,

Plucking you of choices,Silencing the outstanding voices,

Life is too short to question,Each and every suggestion,

Don’t become another salmon in the river,Another arrow in the quiver,

Stand out and shineDon’t wait for your stars to alignIf you suddenly get that feeling,

Become the one in a million

You choose what you want to be,You’re not locked down, you’re still free,

Go on and enjoy your life,Don’t get stuck in society’s strife,

So if you ever question what is accepted,Just remember, ignore society,Use and do what you elected.

Life Of Our SurroundingBy Chansatha Chor

The wind blow, the sun glow in the solar system.

The stars shine at night, the moon was so bright in its highest peak.It was unique to see the solar eclipse and lunar eclipse.

In the deep forests, human camping in a circle. There are animals drinking water from waterfalls.

While the fireball shines bright,And at midnight wolves start howling and growling.

The sound of the wind whistling and communicating with the tree leaves.Swans as white as snowflakes swimming in the lakes.

Some people play sport, maybe at the basketball court, soccer field or even board. Some people work in banks who have no time to play pranks.

Being a doctor at hotels, curing patients without racism about religions or skin tones.Being a teacher at school, individuals need educations to secure their reputation no matter what region.

Students walking to school or taking buses every day,Buddhist and Christian pray, potters make pots and pans out of clay,

Going shopping with trays and then pays.Builders working hard with all their might from their heart.

Testing chemical with test tubes and beaker, that is what scientist do.Trying to find clues for treasures without pressure.

Spending their life drinking beers,Superstars and Models with fans to cheer.

“How popular, they are! I’m so jealous.”,That’s what people keep on gossip.

“Are you free tonight”, asked your friends.“Of course, I’m free”, but your parents disagree.

Children were used as labour because of poverty. While some children eating spaghetti and their parents have Lamborghini.

Our surrounding is very different and not everyone wants to be independent,Which mean life is unfair, but if it fair then life has no meaning and bring people to become boring.

I will notBy Saige Bombardiero

I will not let the colour of skin define a person, Everyday there are comments made,

People left afraid, Human rights betrayed,

Over the fact of one’s pigmentation, Can’t we see that we are all from the same nation?

For generation upon generation hate has bred down the line,

It continues to grow behind the public eye like a repulsive tick sucking up innocent lives,Leaving behind an empty shell of where humanity and dignity use to thrive within this world.

But we can be a new generation of seeds that can sprout out love and acceptance,

No matter of anyone’s appearance,Together we can change the world and make it equal,

So join me when I say,I will not let the colour of skin define people.
