Éditorial de M. ThézéJe vous écris ces quelques lignes alors que nous venonsd’atteindre la moitié de cette année scolaire et que nouscommençons à mettre en perspective les différentsévènements : examens, graduations, galas, semaine de lalecture, … qui vont ponctuer cette seconde partie de l’annéescolaire.
Je voudrais commencer ce message en souhaitant la bienvenueà toutes les nouvelles familles, au total 24, soit 31 enfants quiont rejoint les bancs du Collège à la rentrée de janvier. Cesfamilles ont été accueillies chaleureusement par les membresde l’association des parents d’élèves lors de la galette des roisle 8 janvier et l’atmosphère dans notre auditorium nousmontrait combien les mots solidarité et soutien étaient mis enpratique au sein de notre communauté.

I am writing these few lines to you as we reach the middle ofthe school year and begin to put into perspective variousimportant events (exams, graduations, galas, reading week…),which will punctuate the second part of the school year. I would like to start this message by welcoming our 24 newfamilies, which represents 31 new children joining our school inJanuary. These families were warmly welcomed by PFAmembers at the New Year’s Coffee Morning on the 8th ofJanuary and the atmosphere in the auditorium showed us howthe words ‘solidarity’ and ‘support’ are put into practice withinour community.

Anne Fine has written books for both adults and children. Herbooks raise serious social issues and tricky family situations,but she does so through comedy and heart-warmingcharacters. Her novel Google-Eyes won her the GuardianChildren's Fiction Prize, as well as Britain's most coveted awardfor children's literature, the Carnegie Medal. She also won twicethe Whitbread Children's Book of the Year for her books FlourBabies and The Tulip Touch. Having written over fifty books for children of all ages that havebeen translated into thirty languages, she became a Children'sLaureate in 2001. Furthermore, her novel Madame Doubtfire was made into a filmby Twenty Century Fox, starring Robin Williams; and her booksGoogle-Eyes and Bill's New Frock have been adapted andscreened by the BBC.

Anne Fine a écrit de nombreux livres pour adultes et pourenfants. Ses livres abordent des sujets sérieux sur la société etsur des situations familiales compliquées, mais elle réussit à lefaire sur un registre comique et à travers des personnagestoujours très attachants. Son roman « Google-Eyes » aremporté le Guardian Chrildren’s Fiction Prize et le très célèbreprix The Carnegie Medal, qui récompense les auteurs delittérature pour enfants. Elle a également décroché à deuxreprises le Whitbread Children’s Book of the Year pour seslivres « Flour Babies » et « Tulip Touch ».

Les élèves de PS3 ont écouté Christine Vachoud raconterl’histoire de Grichka et le petit âne qui a un nouveau maîtredont il peine à déchiffrer les motivations. Comment expliqueren effet que son propriétaire le charge de lourds sacs àtransporter en pleine nuit, lorsque tout le monde goûte aurepos dans les bras de Morphée? Sur les conseils de l'âne dumeunier, Grichka prend la poudre d'escampette. Enfin libéré, lepetit équidé perd tous ses repères alors que la neige tombe drusur une forêt de plus en plus dense….
Un joli spectacle qui donne à réfléchir.

A storyteller in preschool
Students in PS3 listened to Christine Vachoud telling them thestory of Grishka and the little donkey. Grishka has a newmaster who makes him carry heavy bags at night wheneveryone is asleep. He does not understand the motivations ofhis master and on the advice of the miller’s donkey, Grishkadecides to leave. Finally released, the little donkey startsfeeling completely lost while the snow is falling over a darkforest…
A beautiful story that gives food for thought…
PrimaireLes Grade 5/CM2 sont allés au Musée Paul Klee à Berne. Ils ont participé à des ateliers, visité l’exposition et réfléchi surles différentes interprétations d’un tableau. Ils ont égalementappris qu’un œuvre donne des indications sur la vie du peintreet sur la période qu’il traversait.
La semaine dernière, les classes de Grade 4 et de CM1bilingue sont allées visiter le CERN. Les enfants ont participé à un atelier de physique animé par MrSmith. Ils ont assisté à des expériences utilisant de l’azoteliquide : ils ont vu une balle de tennis geler, des tubes secourber…. mais ce qu’ils ont le plus apprécié c’est la glace auchocolat faite pour tout le monde !Cette sortie mémorable restera dans les esprits de tous etnous l’espérons suscitera des vocations de chimiste ou dephysicien !Un grand merci à tous ceux qui ont permis que cette sortie seréalise : Mr Smith bien sûr mais aussi le département ‘Voyages’et tous les parents qui ont accompagné.

Grade 2/3 Visit to the Natural History Museum As part of the Exit Point for our IPC Topic `Footprints fromthe Past` we visited the Dinosaur exhibition at the NaturalHistory Museum in Geneva.The children worked in small groups to discuss and answerquestions about the displays. In the main hall the childrenwere fascinated by the life size models of the dinosaurs. Theydid some fantastic drawings of the T- Rex skull on display. Theyalso enjoyed looking at the huge range of fossilized plants andanimals in the exhibition. A great trip.
The Grade 5/CM2 classes went on an Art trip to the PaulKlee Museum in Bern .Students participated in Art workshops at the museum, visitedthe gallery and learned what it means to have ‘differentinterpretations’ of what you see in a painting. Students alsolearned that paintings can reveal information about a painter’slife and about what was going on in that period.
GRADE 4 and CMI Bilingual Classes` Visit to CERN.Last week, all the Grade 4 and CM1 bilingual classes visitedCERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, inGeneva. We went in groups, over a 2 day period, in order toattend the Funny Physics workshop, which was given by Mr.Vince Smith, who used to work there, but is now retired andlectures at Bristol University, in the U.K. We were entertained,for over an hour, to a series of experiments involving the useof liquid nitrogen, often referred to as dry ice, and used instage productions. We saw tennis balls frozen in it, bendy tubessolidified, a foaming fountain, exploding canisters, and amagical balloon experiment, where an inflated balloon becamedeflated and crunchy, only to re-inflate itself in the heat ! Theyummy finale was when Mr. Smith made chocolate ice creamfor everyone, using chocolate milk, cream, and, of course,liquid nitrogen.I think this visit, which also included seeing the Microcosm,with hands-on exhibits for students to use, will be rememberedfor a long time by all of us. It took us almost into the realms ofalchemy, and will, hopefully, encourage a real interest inPhysics, too.Many thanks to Mr. Smith. We would like to thank the traveldepartment too, and the parents who came along to help us.
Grade 2 Treasure HuntersToday Grade 2 started their new IPC topic on Treasure. Thepirates in training, scoured the playground for clues; counting,
reading and discussing answers. The answers lead them to atreasure trove which was guarded by a very friendly pirate.After whispering the password, Captain Jack Sparrow, alltrainee pirates received a golden ducat.
STAFF/TEACHER teamgives lesson to VarsityBoys
The traditional Varsity Boys –Staff/Teachers “Showdown in theDome” game was played onMonday January 21. A large crowdon hand was treated to anotherexciting game in one of the mostpopular events on the sportscalendar. The Teachers werecruising throughout the first halfwith a comfortable lead. TheVarsity Boys put on the pressurewith their full court press defenseto take the lead in the thirdquarter. The Staff/Teachers withtheir experience, kept calm in the4th quarter, to prevail 57-52.
Well done to the CDL Junior andCDL/Odessy Club cheersportteams for the excellent half timeperformance. Special mention ofthanks to the PFA for promotionand the food stand.

2. Grade 7/5ème Ski Camp
This camp will take place for 3 days during the weekcommencing 4th March. Grades 7/1 and 7/2 will be away withthe 1er Cycle classes from Monday 4th March until Wednesday6th March, whilst Grades 7/3, 7/4, 7/5, 7/6 will be away fromWednesday 6th March until Friday 8th March. Full details will beemailed to parents by this coming Monday.
3. AMIS Music Festival at The Hague
This event was held last weekend and was hugely successful. Itinvolved 26 students from all sections of the school(Anglophone, Francophone, Primary, Middle and High School).Read more about it and see some photos!

High SchoolOption choicesThe High School and the Grade 8 students are in the process ofchoosing courses for next year, following the informationmeetings last week. Their advisors, Ms Ross, Mrs Krainova (forthe IB programme) and Ms Cosso are available to help if thereare any further questions concerning the options.
Extended Essay Workshop at CDL – January 19th and20th The Extended Essay is an essential part of the IB DiplomaProgramme. Each IB Diploma student has to produce aresearch paper of up to 4000 words on a focused topic withintheir subject of interest. Nineteen CDL High School teachersdevoted their free time to attend an Extended EssayWorkshop held during the weekend of the 19th and 20th
January at CDL, led by two outstanding IB workshop leaders. This was a wonderful opportunity for professional developmentwhere the experts came to us rather than the other way round,to ensure that we provide our students with excellentinformed guidance and support for this important component oftheir IB Diploma.
IB2 Students DeadlinesThis is the time of the year when a flood of deadlines descendon the heads of IB2 students. At this moment IB students arecompleting their French and English orals, then commencework on their Maths Projects and immediately before the SkiWeek all students have to upload their TOK Essays on the IBOwebsite for submission. After ski week, the mock IBexaminations will take place and hopefully after that thestudents will be able to take stock from the exam results andstart revising for their finals in May!

Secondary School
Parents and students are reminded that students should not beon the campus after school or on weekends without officialapproval through their registration in after-school activities orclasses. We do not have staff on duty to supervise suchstudents and therefore this is a safety and security issue.
It has also come to our attention that some students have beencongregating after school in the vicinity of Snoopy’s, thenreturning to school to be collected by parents at 5pm orcatching the late bus. This is unacceptable since groups of CDLstudents in that vicinity can attract unhealthy attention fromlocal youth as well as disturbing local residents. The second busservice is also only for students registered in after schoolofficial activities.
International AwardWe are pleased to announce that eleven IG2 and 10th Gradestudents have been the first students at CDL to achieve theirBronze International Award. They have participated in sports,skills, voluntary service and an adventurous journey, consistingof a 2 day hike and overnight camp. The students learnt avariety of new skills from navigation to camp cooking and firstaid to team skills and communication. So congratulations toChloe Eaton, Daniella Zarza, David Ehimenmen OluwatosinOlumebe, Emily Newman, Isabella Farrow, Blake Williams, ReidMoreschi, Lea Garguet-Duport, Max Forrest, Mallory Kocher andAnastasia Ebbinghaus.
This year we currently have 12 students working towards theirSilver level and another 25 students working towards theirBronze. The International Award is currently run by Mr Corbin,Miss Wilson & Mr Hetherington.
Charity
‘ZOA ROCKS’ CONCERT - Saturday 2nd February from7pm to 11pm
at Les Caves des Bon Sejour in Versoix This annual charity event is organized voluntarily by Mr PhilShaw on behalf of one of our school charities ZOA, whichsupports the orphanage in Zambia known as the ‘SerenjeOrphans Childrens Home’. Bands of talented students and staffwill provide a feast of music (over 30 songs) to entertainparents and High School students. The inaugural event lastyear was a wonderful success.
Admission to the event will be by ticket only – i.e. therewill be NO ticket sales at the door. The total number oftickets is restricted to 150 due to the safety capacity of thevenue. Tickets are CHF10 each, and are now on sale eachlunchtime in the Cervin Foyer, or by contacting Mr Gilbert:[email protected] (Please note that this event is restrictedto CDL High School students and their parents.
Usual school rules of behavior will apply to all studentsattending – specifically, no alcohol and no smoking. Oncestudents leave the event, they cannot regain entry.
NHSThe National Honor Society is undoubtedly one of the mostrobust organisations at Collège du Léman, its forty-memberbody endeavoured to contributing to the community ofstudents, faculty and parents with the utmost commitment.Membership open to those who best embody the school spiritand those that strive to excel in their academic environment,the group of students has organised numerous eventsthroughout the year, the first a highly successful PFA Barbequethat helped raise funds for various charity organisationsthrough food, music, competitions and games.
Furthermore, for the Middle School Halloween Dance, the NHSbuilt a life-size haunted house, much to the students’enjoyment, continuing its festive spirit around Christmas timein its supplying of candy canes to students and staff.
Holidays aside, the Live Lounge was a huge success, featuringnumerous impressive musical performances by many students,
as was the NHS bonding event, an evening through which allmembers of the organisation were able to socialise as acommunity.
Through its dedicated and enthusiastic members, the NationalHonor Society hopes to continue providing innovative andenjoyable events for all members of Collège du Léman in theforeseeable future.
National Honor Society
Le National Honor Society est sans aucun doute une desorganisations les plus robustes au sein du Collège du Léman.Avec ses 40 membres nous contribuons chaque semaine aubien-être des élèves, des professeurs et des parents avec leplus grand des engagements. L'adhésion est ouverte à ceux quiincarnent le mieux le "school spirit" et à ceux qui s'efforcentd'exceller dans leur environnement académique.
Le groupe d'étudiants a déjà organisé un grand nombred'évènements, tels que le PFA Barbecue, qui nous a aidé acollecté des fonds pour plusieurs organisations caritatives grâceà la vente de nourriture, de boisson, mais également grâce àdes jeux organisés pour les enfants.De plus, pour la danse de Halloween du premier cycle, nousnous sommes chargés de créer une maison hantée, qui abeaucoup plue aux élèves. Cet esprit festif, nous l'avonspoursuivi en distribuant des sucres d'orges aux élèves etprofesseurs la semaine avant les vacances de Noel.
Ce qui a été un très grand succès cette année est le "LiveLounge", évènement où beaucoup d'étudiants ont pu montrerleurs talents musicaux, tout en permettant au public desocialiser d'autant plus. A travers l'esprit dévoué et enthousiaste des membres, laNational Honor Society espère poursuivre ses évènementsagréables, notamment dans un Hôpital, afin de véritablement
