Thursday 22 June 2017 Term 2 Week 8 Connected, self managing learners, striving for excellence Tēnā koutou katoa ngā mihi ki te whānau ō te Kura ō Otatara - greetings to all families of Otatara School. MATARIKI Rooms 1, 2 and 3 celebrated Matariki with a breakfast yesterday in the Community Centre, it was wonderful to see such self managing learners waiting patiently to spread their own toast. MID YEAR REPORTING We are very excited next week to be sharing our learning with parents/caregivers at our mid year reporting student led conferences. If you have not yet made a booking please do so as soon as possible at www.schoolinterviews.co.nz with the code 6n3jm. Please remember if you are booking for more than one child you need to leave a gap between your conferences/interviews. Classes will finish on Wednesday 28th June at 12.30pm with buses, Chipmunks and Cornerstone pickups running at that time. Thursday 29th June classes will finish at 2.00pm with supervision provided for those students unable to be collected early. Please note buses and after school programmes will run at the usual 2.50pm time on Thursday. Year 1-3 students will take their learning journal home after the student led conference, please return these to school on Monday 3rd July. For Year 4-6 students, student led conference conversations will be based around student books. A short report showing progress and next learning steps in relation to the National Standards of reading, writing and mathematics will be provided. If you have a conference booked early on Thursday afternoon before the usual school end time of 2.50pm and intend to meet your child at school, please go to the library for juniors or the hall for seniors as no students will be playing unsupervised in the playground. COMMUNITY FEEDBACK Given that many parents/whanau will be in and around school next week with our mid year reporting process we thought we would utilise the opportunity to elicit your feedback. There are multiple ways that you can engage with our feedback process. Peter, Alison and I will be available if you would like to chat to someone face to face, classrooms may have ipads or computers in their waiting areas with our google forms survey and the survey will be accessible from our web page. The survey is very short, consisting of only 2 questions related to your child’s learning. Your feedback is an important part of our self review process so we hope you take a moment to respond to our questions. NZ PLAYHOUSE We recently received a thank you from the New Zealand Playhouse, the group who performed Puss in Boots. They commented on ‘what a treat it was to perform at such a drama focused school’. BLOCK B UPDATE Rooms 6 and 7 are almost complete and we expect to move back into these spaces next week, fingers crossed. Rooms 8 and 9 will then relocate to the Community Centre as their rooms are refurbished, returning at the beginning of Term 3 if everything goes to plan. SOUTHLAND CROSS COUNTRY Eleven of our students are off to Waimumu tomorrow to represent Kiwi Zone in the Southland Cross Country championships, we shall be thinking of them all and wish them every success. SPELLING STARS Congratulations to the 2 teams of 4 students who represented our school at the annual Southspell competition at James Hargest College last night: TEAM A - Dayne Harvey, Molly Flynn, Keita Ruwhiu and Kobe Rooney TEAM B - Lucy Cooper, Poppy Donnelly, Jordan Marshall and Sam Kubrycht-Ellis Team A gained third place out of 31 teams, special thanks to Mrs Rooney and Mr N-V for coaching and supporting our teams over the last few weeks.
