Principal’s Report
Winter Wonderland
It was fun seeing some students on Tuesday
excited about the brief snowfall after lunch. It almost
makes the cold tolerable.
I encourage all carers to check whether their child is
wearing their warm green polar fleece top to school.
Uniform Update
Thank you to those carers who have helped their
children to not wear ugg boots and/or tights to school.
Firstly, it is a better look, and secondly the school
then conforms to the Occupational Health and Safety
Act.
The hoodies are now in Sydney being embroidered,
and should reach us next week. I appreciate the
patience everyone has shown this Term waiting for
their arrival. I encourage you to place an order as soon
as you can to be prepared for Term 3.
Reports
Take the time to read your child’s report when it
arrives home. Should there be questions you wish to
ask teachers, I encourage you to contact the school
and make an appointment to discuss your concerns.
Agile Minds
I have just returned from Bathurst South Public
School where Year 5 students were immersed in a
Science activity being run by Mr Luccarda and
several talented Kelso HC students. It was great to see
these young men interacting as tutors and role models
for future KHC students. I hope the straw towers stay
standing!
School Development Day
There will be a combined Denison College School
Development Day on Monday 18th
of July. Staff from
both campuses will be interacting during the day,
ensuring that the College and its campuses continue to
provide such exceptional programs.
Students resume school on Tuesday 19
Have a safe and happy holiday, and we will retu
of enthusiasm next Term.

College Principal’s Report
Recognition for exciting Initiative!
Staff at both campuses of Denison College have been
working hard over an extended period of time to
ensure that we are able to cater for the needs of all of
our students, especially since the introduction of the
new school leaving age in January 2010.
Creating partnerships with other agencies is a key
strategy in ensuring that education is relevant and that
the skills are transferable to the workplace.
To this end, Denison College worked with a wide
range of non-school based agencies throughout the
latter part of 2010 and throughout the first part of this
year to create the School Within A School Program.
This program, aspects of which have been trialled
during this term in conjunction with Bathurst TAFE,
Central West Community College and Headspace,
will be expanded in Term 3 with a view to full
implementation in 2012.
As a result of the quality of work that has been done
to date and the importance of this strategy in engaging
young people with education, Denison College has
received a significant grant from the Department of
Education and Communities to support the further
development of this program.
I particularly thank Mr Hastings (Principal, Bathurst
High Campus) for his work in initiating the project
and bringing the various agencies together and Mr
Behan (Program Co-ordinator, Kelso High Campus)
for the outstanding work he
the curriculum and coordinating activities.

Elective Drama Performance Evening -
Tuesday 28th
June
Kelso High’s Drama students in Years 9, 10 and 11
have been very busy over the semester. They have
been stretching their creative brains by studying a
range of topics including Playbuilding, Comedy,
Commedia D’ell Arte and exploring aspects of
technical production through Michael Gow’s play
Away. Quite a few of them have found the subject to
be both challenging and engaging – including coming
to the realisation that, yes, you really do have to work
hard in Drama (!). A selection of the students’
performances will be presented at a Drama Night that
is being held next Tuesday 28th
June, commencing at
6:30pm. All are welcome to attend and tea and coffee
will be served. The details are:
Where: Human Movement Studio – Kelso
High Campus
When: 6:30 – 8:30 pm (approx) Tuesday
28th
June 2011
Cost: Gold coin donation
Please come along to what promises to be a very
entertaining evening given the talent amongst our
Drama students.

F1 Car Challenge 2011
This year Kelso High will be entering the F1 In
Schools Car Challenge which is an International
competition requiring students to design and make a
model F1 racing car to stringent guidelines together
with a portfolio outlining all aspects of the project.
Earlier this month representatives from Re-
Engineering Australia visited the school and discussed
the requirements of the challenge as well as
demonstrating the race track. At the end of 2010 some
Year 8 students were fortunate enough to travel to
Eastern Creek to spectate the State finals of the
Challenge.
Five, now Year 9 students, will be undertaking the
project. It is then hoped to expand the opportunity to
more students in the coming years. Glen Porter, from
Practical Drafting and Design in Bathurst, will be our
industry mentor and we thank him for his
involvement.

Under 15 Girls Soccer
The girls in the Bill Turner Shield girls’ soccer
recently played James Sheehan Catholic School in the
second round of the competition. In the first round we
were drawn to play Lithgow High but, for the third
year, Lithgow forfeited. This was disappointing as the
girls missed match practice before facing James
Sheehan.
The game began with a very even battle about to
unfold. The James Sheehan team had a couple of
quick forwards that were to be our undoing in the end.
In the first half we gradually took control of the game.
With the momentum in our favour we started many
attacking raids on the James Sheehan goal. Eventually
we were rewarded with a goal to Rebecca Bennett.
This was Rebecca’s very first goal in a competitive
soccer game; well done Rebecca. We kept up the
pressure for the remainder of the half. A penalty goal
to Morgan Sherman saw our team go into the half
time break with a 2 goal lead. At this stage it looked
as though we could be in for a big win.
The second half was a different story. Our girls
seemed to lose their way for about 10 minutes. Our
defence eased off and the result was 3 quick goals to
James Sheehan. The Kelso girls appeared to regroup
after this and for the remainder of the game attacked
the James Sheehan goal. Unfortunately for Kelso we
were unable to score another goal. The end result was
a loss 3 goals to 2.
The team, pictured below, consisted of:
Morgan Sherman (C), Brooke Inwood, Cassandra
Talbot, Chloe Lamberton, Courtney Downey, Olivia
Sheehan, Kayla Grenfell, Caitlin Morris, Rebecca
Benett, Minna Annand, Kelly Baker, Gina Grenfell,
Chloe Gibson.
Senior Boys Soccer
The Kelso High senior boys’ soccer team has
progressed to the final of Western Region. In doing so
they have defeated the following schools: Lithgow
High (4-1), Bathurst High (2-1), Orange High (3-1)
and Cowra High School (7-0). In these 4 matches the
team has scored 16 goals whilst conceding only 3
goals.
The squad consists of: Tim Porter, Hayden James,
Lachlan Thomas, Michael Betts, Andrew Christie,
Jacob Soetens, Harley Henderson, Joshua Sandry,
Brayden North, Jye Fleischman, Joshua Hugo,
Lorenzo Andalo, James Cox, Caleb Moore, Jack Press
and Jeremy Judge.
This team is possibly the most talented boys’ soccer
team that Kelso High has produced for some time.
Congratulations go to all the players for such an
outstanding performance, and especially to their
captain Tim Porter for his excellent leadership.
Activities on the agriculture plot
Poddy calves
All the agriculture classes, plus a few Science classes,
have been busy caring for two friesian poddy calves
that were kindly donated from Avondale Dairy,
Springhill. The calves were two weeks old when they
arrived and were reluctant to drink milk from a bucket
as they had come straight from a foster cow. The
students have learnt how to mix and patiently feed the
calves their milk as well as grooming and teaching the
calves to lead.
The calves are now seven weeks old and have a gusty
appetite for pellets. At the end of this term, they will
go to live on a large farm as the Agriculture Plot does
not have the facilities to handle, or feed to keep them
when they grow to a 400kg size!
Dog attack on calf
Last week a stray dog entered the school and attacked
the calves in their paddock. One of the calves
sustained lacerations and a fractured jaw requiring the
services of Dr Tom McClelland, Veterinary Surgeon.
It was a horrific incident for the students to witness.
The Pound was called and the dog removed and
destroyed. Corey Chapman from Year 10 is to be
commended for his prompt action in assisting in the
rescue of the calf.
Please if you have a dog that roams, keep it at home. The Agriculture Plot plans to have lambs next
term and they would certainly not survive a dog
attack.
Chickens
Year 10 Agriculture students are currently negotiating
with their parents to buy and bring home their 6 week
old chickens that they have hatched in the incubator
and raised.
A small flock of layer hens are kept at school which
is very popular with Year 8 Agriculture classes. The
students learn how to handle chickens, clean and feed
them.
Winter Chill
The low temperatures have brought a halt to growth
of vegetables in the gardens. The students have been
sowing seed trays to plant when the soil temperature
rises next term. The hot house is a cosy place to be on
our chilly days!

Careers News
Year 10 students have received their Work
Experience packages and can now start contacting
their chosen employer and organising their
placements. Parents are asked to look at the package
with their child to ensure they are familiar with the
operation of the Work Experience program.
