KURUNJANG PRIMARY SCHOOL ~ “Learning Together” NEWSLETTER 27 - 2020 Thursday 10 th September, 2020 PRINCIPAL’S REPORT An important reminder of our notice on COMPASS and in the newsletter regarding enrolments for Foundation in 2021. If you have a child ready to start Foundation next year we are having an information evening tonight at 5.30pm via ZOOM. Please email the school before 4.00pm this afternoon to register on [email protected]. Once registered we will forward the ZOOM link to click on and attend the hour session. Families who already have children attending KPS can pick up an enrolment form from the office once we resume on-site learning. Please know that if you are residing in the designated neighbourhood area for Kurunjang your child is assured a place at Kurunjang PS. Knowing as soon as we can however allows us to plan the required staffing and room allocations. If you know any families who reside in our schools designated area and will be enrolling in school for the first time please ask them to contact the school on 9743 0633 and we can assist them. The on line alternative to our usual information evening is necessary as a result of the current restrictions for gatherings. We will still be able to share an electronic presentation about year Foundation, introduce you to this year’s Foundation teachers and leaders, provide opportunity to ask questions via the ZOOM chat feature and verbally. We look forward to meeting you all at 5.30pm in the ZOOM meeting space! Last Sunday’s announcement by Premier Daniel Andrews and Education Minister James Merlino has shed light on the direction for schools in Term 4. However, at the moment it is expected that remote learning will continue next week (the last week of term) and recommence following the holidays on 5th October. On the 12th October (week 2) the children in Foundation, Year 1 and Year 2 will return to on site learning. Children in Years 3-6 will continue remote PRINCIPAL’S REPORT learning until at least the 26th October (week 4). It is hoped that the Year 3-6 students will return to school on the 26th October, however this is dependent on the number of new COVID cases at that time. We are awaiting further detail tomorrow regarding staggered arrival and dismissal times when the children are back at school, eligibility for children attending supervision on site during remote learning and work permits. I will forward this information in preparation for the return to school. At School Council on Tuesday night the provision of LOTE (language other than English) was discussed. Five years ago we canvassed the opinion of the community around a preferred language to be taught at KPS. At the time Mandarin via Skype was being trialled in Years 1/2. Languages most popular with the community were Aboriginal (Woiwurung), Auslan and Mandarin. Permission was given by the Wurundjeri Council for the teaching of Woiwurung, however attempts to recruit an approved Woiwurung teacher were unsuccessful. Mandarin via Skype was therefore incrementally extended to Foundation to Year 4. School Council are returning to seeking your opinion regarding continuing Mandarin or pursuing the other popular choice of an accredited language - AUSLAN. We will soon send an invite via COMPASS to participate in a short survey regarding your preference for LOTE. Take care and stay safe, ~ Learning Together

CELEBRATION OF LEARNING

3/4 BLAKE

"I congratulate 3/4 Blake for their continued success during this second round of remote learning. They have improved their attendance and engagement this second time around and have demonstrated their resilience and growth mindset. Students have been improving their ability to follow feedback using this growth mindset, asking themselves if it is their best work and how they can improve it. Having been one of the first classes to engage with Webex Meetings, they were a true set of role models by understanding and following the expectations we discussed. They immediately understood the nature of this new remote learning platform and have continued to act in this space following the KPS school values."
