    Issue 1

Dear partners and those who are interested,

From the Project secretary-management Aeres University of Applied Sciences Wageningen I want to welcome you by reading this rst Newsletter of the ViSuAl-project.

During the EARPIL conference the steering committee meeting took place. Besides this, the project members worked very hard in the morning and evenings. The meetings where very constructive and leaded to good conver-sations about the experiments resulting good instruments of describing the pilots and rst cycle of experiments in the ViSuAL project. Also, the basis was build for other constructive instruments for building the pedagogical model about video-collaborative learning, but also for the model of cooperation between Higher education institutes and educational video environments designing companies. Therefore, it was wonderful to have the input from our com-pany partners during these meetings. The latter shows the power and strengthens of the ViSuAL project.

Greetings,Frank de Jong, project responsabel manager.

    Eapril 2018

Most of the time members of the ViSuAL project see each other through computer or telephone screens while being connected with Zoom or Skype, but on the 11th of Novemebr there was a rare chance to meet each other face to face. Quite a lot of ViSuAL partners were present during the Eapril conference which took place from 12th to 14th of November in Portorož, Slovenia. We had a possibility to discuss important matters more eciently and it also gave us a chance to get to know the people with whom everybody is working.

But what exactly is the Eapril conference about and why did ViSuAL participate in it? Eapril (European Association for Practitioner Research on Improving Learning) https://www.eapril.org/ acts as an associate partner in the project. EAPRIL’s annual conference in November was chosen as ViSuAL-project’s dissemination platform and co-creation workshop arena due the fact that EAPRIL gathers teachers and research around Europe and globally to network and learn from each other from practice-oriented research projects focusing on learning and professional development, which ViSuAL’s core idea is.

Next year the conference will be held in Tartu on the 27th to 29th of November 2019. The University of Tartu will be making sure that the upcoming conference will be as great as it was in Slovenia.

  • ViSuAL seminar in the University of Tartu

On 17th of October the Univeristy of Tartu had a seminar where they introduced 4 out of the 6 Educational Technology Designers. IRIS Connect and Fowbox were present online, giving short presentations about their opportunities. EdVisto and Nordic Simulators kindly sent the Tartu team introductory videos about their video based solutions. The goal was to create interest in the participating lecturers to conduct an experiment using one of those technologies. After the presentations, there was a space for the participants to create an idea of how they could use them in their activities. All in all, it was a success and the rst experiment plan meeting was done with one of the participants.

  • JAMK University of Applied Sciences (JAMK) is an internationally-oriented higher education institution providing Bachelor and Masters’ programs and in addition a wide range of professional development and continuing education programs and courses in the elds of Technology, Business, Social and Health as well as Teacher Education. The total amount of students is about 8500 and personnel about 700. The basic tasks include degree awarding education, RDI, and continuing education and services.

The ViSuAL-project has been visual and active at JAMK University of Applied Sciences soon after its launch in January 2018. They have designed and implemented a number of local, regional and national level activities during the rst year of the project’s life.Soon after the project’s kick-o meeting, JAMK was excited and really keen to inform the sta members at the university and everyone else outside the university about the project and its aims. They thought the best way to reach a wider publicity was to write a blog text in Finnish. The text was published in their university’s blog page in February 2018 and can be accessed using this

JAMK created a team of 9 motivated and innovative university lecturers together a project coordinator, who are involved with the ViSuAL-project at JAMK to make sure the project’s aims will be met. As a team, they meet once a month to discuss the tasks to be completed, share experiences, concerns and successes they have faced. Recently, the team’s discussions have focused on the design and implementation of the experiments At the regional level, JAMK organised a workshop for the educational technology business partners to introduce their products to the wider audience. This event took place on 8th of May 2018 at JAMK University of Applied Sciences in where about 30 interested professionals in video technology gathered to listen to what the presented applications have to oer for collaborative learning. A blog text of the event was written in Finnish.JAMK presented the ViSuAL-project also at the national level at the National Forum of Teacher Education on 5th April 2018 organised by the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture. The national forum gathered almost 100 participants. The blog text of the event can be read via this

  • IRIS Connect is a video-based collaborative professional learning platform that enables teachers to capture, reect on, analyze and share practice. The objective is to improve pupil outcomes by improving teaching through eective and evidence-based professional development.

Born out of, and continually informed by research, IRIS Connect’s innovative system radically improves professional development by enabling the types of learning that research has shown to support teachers and improve outcomes. This includes experiential learning, peer-to-peer collaboration regardless of geographical location, collaborative learning communities, research and action research. An evolving feature that facilitates sustainable and scalable coaching has been real-time in-ear coaching.

Uniquely, IRIS Connect have developed a structured, interactive professional learning program - The IRIS Connect Film Club - to support eective implementation and adoption of innovation at schools and HEIs, and develop a culture of trust and support.

As a pioneer in the use of video for teacher professional development in the UK since 2008 and as a learning company, they were very glad to be invited to partner with HEI and other industry partners within the ViSuAl project. It gives IRIS Connect a valuable opportunity to both validate what they have done so far and to continue to develop the tools, frameworks and approaches necessary to engage teachers impactfully in video-based professional learning in the co-creation process.

    Some upcoming experiments

JAMKThe experiment will take place at School of Music with BSc-students who are becoming kantele teachers. Kantele is a Finnish national instrument which has 39 strings. Kantele is still quite uncommon instrument having small number of BSc-students nationwide.

Plan is to use IRIS Connect and/or iVideo technologies by videorecording music teaching practice sessions, where teachers are the music students. And give students possibility to analyse the videos and also to receive peer-feedback from students from other UAS, who will access to the videos as well. Peer-students can be from another UAS and they are not participating at the same time or at the same place as the student. These technologies could oer remarkable support for students learning to play Kantele. Responsible teacher-researcher in this experiment is Ms Tiina Takkinen.

University of TartuThe experiment takes place as a part of teacher education practice course titled “Digital Technologies in Art Education” at the University of Tartu. This is a compulsory practice course for all student teachers who have selected the art teacher module.

For this experiment EdVisto, and it’s possibilities to create videos in a more collaborative way, are compared to a more traditional video editing software. The challenge is to explore ways to achieve collaboration during video editing tasks - traditional video editing software limits the number of people contributing to the project to one and delegates others into the role of bystander. Can collaborative video-editing apps/software change how video projects are done while working in a group? The main interest is to see how the roles will be divided by the students, what kind of group dynamic will develop. Meelis Brikker will be the responsible lecturer in this experiment.

SFIVETThe study will take place at the Swiss Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training SFIVET from November 2018 to February 2020. The experimentation will be developed within the VET teachers’ basic training track which includes inter alia reective activities on authentic professional situations. 36 in-service VET teachers will be participating to the experience which will be focused on collaborative and shared feedback on actual instructional situations as well as on self-provided feedback tasks on one’s own lesson. The interactive video software iVideo.education will be used primarily, as it enables to directly annotate a video and to share all the written comments. Two conditions are foreseen: a) teachers will provide feedback to peers and to themselves in a collaborative way on video-recorded lessons using the video-annotation feature of iVideo.education; b) teachers will deliver feedback to peers and to themselves based on direct observation of peers’ lessons. In both cases, each feedback session conducted in pairs will also be followed by a group collaborative session to discuss specic sequences and related feedback. Analogously, a nal activity of analysis on an unknown teacher’s lesson will be also conducted.

This study aims to evaluate the impact of hetero and self-video analysis and annotation on teachers’ reective skills, and assess the eects of using video-annotation on the quality and quantity of collaborative peer-to-peer feedback, as well as and to test the feasibility of the instructional model to be steadily integrated
