What a fabulous day was had by all at our school NAIDOC celebrations last week. The children enjoyed many wonderful activities including face painting, screen printing, storytelling, artefact exploration and Aboriginal games, as well as some delicious fried bread (Johnny cakes). We would like to extend our thanks to Mrs Karen Newton for organising the day and Aunty Thelma, Tina Franke, Bilyana, Glen Rhodes and the students from The Rivers College, Richmond River High School Campus for coming to support and run the activities. Mrs Bronwyn Pagotto also coordinated a fantastic group of parent and grandparent volunteers in the canteen during the day. The children thoroughly enjoyed the food and activities.

Enrolling Now – Kindergarten and Preschool 2017 If you have a child who is beginning in either Kindergarten or Preschool with us at Lismore South in 2017, please come in to the school office to pick up an enrolment form. It was great to see many families attend our Kindergarten Information Evening last week. If you were unable to attend, please don’t hesitate to make an enrolment interview through the school office to find out more about our transition to school program, which will begin in Term 4. Youth Forum The staff and RED Inc ISS Team would like to congratulate the Year 5 and 6 students who attended the leadership forum last Thursday. The school received many positive comments on their participation and behaviour. You were a credit to our school.

What’s been happening in Preschool?

NAIDOC Week Celebrations On Tuesday, the Echidna group was lucky to be part of our whole school NAIDOC celebration. We spent the whole day rotating around our school, being a part of many different activities such as face painting, screen printing, painting message stones, playing traditional games, listening to dreamtime stories, singing songs in Bundjalung and learning a few traditional Aboriginal words from our local area. We were even lucky enough to try some delicious ‘Johnny cakes’. Thank you to all of the staff and parent helpers, everyone had a great day. It was lovey to see how well the preschool children listened and followed instructions all day. Well done Preschoolers! Thank you The Goanna group had a special visit from some baby animals last week and we would like to thank Jordeena for bringing some baby ducklings and a two day old lamb into preschool and Tanya for showing us a two week old piglet. The children and the teachers loved seeing the baby animals. Dates to Remember Echidnas – Last day of Term 2 is Tuesday, 28th June. Term 3 commences on Tuesday, 19th July Goannas – Last day of Term 2 is Thursday, 30th June. Term 3 commences on Thursday, 21st July Preschool will be closed on Friday, 1st July for cleaning and Monday, 18th July is a Staff Development Day. Did you know? Children under two should steer clear of screen time altogether. Children aged 2-5 years need no more than an hour a day. And children aged 5-18 years no more than two hours. Here are some play ideas that will keep children entertained without using small screens like TV, computer, tablets or phones: Music or story CDs are a good option for preschoolers. Make up dance moves to go with their favourite music. Put together a special box of games, puzzles, toys or objects that you bring out only at those difficult times of day. They don’t need to be expensive or fancy – just things your child doesn’t see all the time.

Sometimes all you’ll need to do is point them in the right direction – towards the jumble of dress-ups and toys on the floor, or to the table with crayons and paper. Kellie Keed - Preschool Educator
