INSIDE THIS ISSUE

Message from the Principal

PC Newsletter

Term 2, Issue 3—July 2014

A huge thank you to

everyone who helped out

with the organisation of

our College Fair and also

to the community who

attended on the day. We

estimate about 3000-4000

people attended on what turned out to be the perfect

day, weatherwise!

Proceeds from the Fair meant we

were able to donate hundreds of

cans to the Kapiti Foodbank as well

as being able to hand over a

cheque for $800. $4000 was raised

for Kapiti Youth Support (KYS) with

additional money being raised by

College groups for various activi-

ties.

It was a highly successful and fun day for all. Without our sponsors and

volunteers this would not have been possible.

Watch this space for details of our next College Fair earmarked for

2016!

Tena koutou katoa

I am constantly amazed at the achievements

of Paraparaumu College’s students. Our

latest national champions are the brand new

Paraparaumu College team of Cheerleaders

who won the national secondary schools title

at the “Cheer Brandz Rock n Cheer Nationals”

in Auckland at the end of last term. As well

as winning the secondary schools’ title the

Paraparaumu College team was selected as

the Grand Champions of the entire competi-

tion.

It is hard to keep track of all of the successes

of our students, but I am aware of individuals

from this school who have represented New

Zealand in 2014 in BMX racing, wrestling,

mountain-biking, tennis, karate, vaulting, AFL

and inline hockey. Many of our winter sports

teams will also be competing in the finals of

their regional competitions over the next few

weeks. We wish them well.

In the extra-curricular arts programme, re-hearsals are underway for this term’s musical showcase and planning has begun for a ma-jor drama production, to be held at the end of this term.

Involvement in school activities outside of the class-

room helps students to feel connected to the school.

It also enables them to meet and work with students,

teachers and parents from throughout the College

community towards a shared goal. Involvement in

these types of activities often has a positive impact

on academic achievement as students transfer the

confidence, independence and ability to relate to

others developed through the extra-curricular pro-

gramme into their classroom work and interactions.

Despite this the major focus in Term Three, especially

for our Year 11-13 students, is on completing NCEA

internal assessments and preparing for the external

examinations in Term Four. It is crucial that students

prioritise their academic work now to ensure that

they achieve the best possible results at the end of

the year. From the conversations I have had, I know

most students are carefully monitoring their achieve-

ment towards their goals.

I wish everyone in the Paraparaumu College commu-

nity a successful term.

Applications for Tertiary Study

Students intending to continue their

study at any tertiary establishment

(University, Polytechnic or private

Halls of Residence Applications

Applications for Halls of Residence at the

various Universities usually become

available on-line (or sometimes in hard-

applications have to be at Universities by

the middle of September but students are

advised to get their application done on-

line as soon as possible. Students are

responsible for submitting the other part of

the application and the College’s Confiden-

completion of these references by the

College is extremely time consuming so

we ask that the Common Confidential

to the College Office by Monday 4th

August at the LATEST.

Students may apply for a Hall of Residence

at more than one University and should

apply even if there is some doubt whether

Year 9 Gifted and Talented Programme 2014 With the intention of personalising learning here at Paraparaumu College we are undertaking a process to identify Year 9 students with

special skills and abilities. For identification purposes the definition “gifted and talented” for us applies to a wide range of students

with many different abilities and qualities.

The breadth of these qualities and abilities is reflected in the following six broad areas of giftedness and talent:

Intellectual/Academic

Creativity

Expression

Social/Leadership

Culture-specific

Expression

Our initial identification process will involve teacher nomination, however, if you would like more information around this initiative or

would like to discuss nominating your child to be involved in the programme, please do not hesitate to contact Aaron Mead at the Col-

lege at [email protected].

Once we have identified our students we will explore ways of assisting these students to realise their full potential.

Please click here for further explanation of the 6 areas of giftedness and talent or you can find it on our website under Students/Gifted

and Talented Programme 2014.

Sheilah Winn Shakespeare in Schools Competition

Paraparaumu College has had another successful year at the Sheilah Winn Regional Shakespeare in Schools competition. The College took an enthusiastic and talented group to Otaki College for the regionals and came away with two well deserved awards for their efforts. A group of 10 students performed a combined witches scene set in a modern school yard and as a result of their performance Josh Lamb, who played MacBeth, received the Moby Dickens Bookshop award for Best Delivery of Text. Renee Black, Paraparaumu College’s Head Girl, directed a 5 minute scene, also from MacBeth, where Lady MacBeth has been driven to the point of insanity by her actions. For her stunning portrayal of Lady Macbeth Flora Dryburgh won the award which gives her auto-matic entry to the National Shakespeare in Schools Production week. This is the group which is made up of direct entry winners and those from the National competition held at Queen’s Birthday weekend. In September the national group ends up being around 45 and half of these are selected to go to the Globe Theatre in London.
