Newsletter 426 – March 2020

From the ANSW President - Tim Nolan. COVID19 and its Impact on our Sport

We have made a firm decision based on the Prime Minister and State Premiers’ decisions on Sunday 29 March to severely restrict public movement and gatherings. These levels of restrictions may increase shortly. In consultation with the Executive of ANSW we are advising that all Clubs flying fields should now be closed until further notice. If you have to maintain the field then please keep people in attendance to an absolute minimum with all keeping a safe distance from each. We implore all clubs to take this matter seriously as the majority of our members are in the high-risk categories. None of us want to lose our flying mates nor be responsible for giving the virus to someone. Take the time to finish or start some of those projects that you have been putting off. I am taking this opportunity to clean the shed and to build a Shearwater, my COVID 19 project. What will you be doing? Tim Nolan President ANSW

Newsletter 426 – March 2020

From the Editor – Rob Masters. In line with ANSW’s position, as communicated in Bulletin Number Twenty One 2019-2020 of 26 March 2020, ANSW expects that all programmed events, at this stage until the end of May 2020 will either be cancelled or postponed pending further advice. I have done my best to contact each of you currently listing events in the Rolling Calendar – thank you all for getting back to me. I have decided to leave the calendar intact so as not to lose complete track of everything that was planned. All events from now through to the end of May Have been either cancelled or postponed pending further advice and indicated in the calendar thus. As well, all events for June and beyond where specifically advised by the contact that they have been cancelled for now have also been struck through Should things begin to look up and restrictions on gathering lifted, I have no doubt that those concerned will review their options and advise us accordingly. Likewise, should this current situation drag on then those events planned for beyond June that have not been cancelled at this stage may also need to be reconsidered - please keep me updated and stay tuned. In the meantime, I echo Tim’s sentiments and suggest we all “take some time to finish or start some of those projects that we have been putting off” - your workshop is your safe haven. Take care Rob Masters ANSW Newsletter Editor

Newsletter 426 – March 2020

At The Field As your editor, I occasionally get stuck for something interesting to add to the newsletter and resort to cruising the web – sometimes I luck in and sometimes not. Many times I have resorted to the aeromodelling newsletter editor’s bible, “At The Field - Offbeat Stories About R/C Model Airplanes And The People Who Fly Them”, courtesy of David P. Andersen. David’s book is a joy to read, a mixture of technical articles, humorous stories and insights. He is truly generous in that “modelers who write for their club newsletter are welcomed and encouraged to copy anything they find here—permission to copy is granted to all, but please credit the source”. I have reprinted the introduction to the book here in full and the following link will download it in a pdf version. If you do download it please read and enjoy. If you Google David P. Andersen you’ll find a wealth of references to his aeromodelling contribution. http://www.tcrconline.com/documents/At%20the%20field.pdf

Introduction This book is an anthology of the best of David P. Andersen’s writing to date. All of the material presented here has been published before in Model Aviation, R/C Modeler, R/C Report, Flare-Out, the newsletter of the Twin City Radio Controllers and other magazines. This book is unique among modeling books because of its intentional lack of focus. It includes fiction, technical stuff, flying techniques, humor, aviation history, theory, building tips, the full gamut of R/C modeling. Consider the short story, Fly It Again, for example. It’s about a man fondly remembering his dad and how they flew free flight airplanes before the invention of radio control. But it takes place while he is flying in a pattern contest, so the underlying message is a lesson in how to adjust aerobatics to a crosswind. Or consider the story, Forbidden Flight. It is about how a typical modeler invents solutions to modeling problems. But it takes place in ancient Egypt. It speculates on how a model airplane could have built at that time, maybe even a hang glider. Alas, poor Dewey Goddit, a big-hearted ditz who takes everything literally. He gets into messes as most modelers do, but on a bigger scale. Yet he perseveres, as all modelers must. There really was a Klotz the Kat. He was a homeless kitten someone “released” at the TCRC flying field. He hung out with the flyers who shared their sandwiches with him. He became so comfortable around model airplanes that he once climbed onto a wing while the engine was running. After that incident, one of the flyers found a new home for him, but the legend continues. The premise is that Klotz is present at the field all the time, so he observes everything that happens. Sometimes he stows away in a modeler’s minivan to report from Toledo or Top Gun. The TCRC Flare-Out newsletter editor leaves his laptop overnight once in a while for Klotz to write his monthly column. He continues to this day. This book was written for R/C modelers and their friends and families. Modelers will find much valuable information buried in the silliness and humor. Non-modelers will find insight into the lifestyle of R/C modelers.
