Catholic Education Week

Last week (24 – 30 July) saw all Catholic Schools throughout Queensland celebrate Catholic Education Week. The theme for

Catholic Education in 2016 was Opening Doors in the Year of Mercy. Throughout Catholic Education Week all Catholic schools

throughout the state of Queensland stopped to celebrate who they are and how they open the doors and welcome and value

all staff, students, families, parish members and volunteers.

Students at St Monica’s discussed the importance of Mercy and, how they can be merciful. The students in each class brain-

stormed ideas of how to be merciful and created a wordle, which are proudly displayed within each classroom.

Dear Students, Staff, Parents, Caregivers and Friends,

Thank you to our community for supporting Catholic Education Week, it was great to see so many parents in the school

grounds last Friday. I trust that you enjoyed the breakfast. A special thank you to the staff who provided a prepared

breakfast for the families in attendance. It was our way of saying ‘Welcome’ and ‘Thank you’ to our families.

As the theme for Catholic Education Week 2016 was based on mercy, I hope the children gained a greater understand-

ing of the concept of mercy and how to apply it in their relationships with their friends at school.

It was great to hear that our Prep and Year 1 students enjoyed their visit to the Cobb & Co Museum yesterday to partic-

ipate in a number of learning opportunities to enhance their understandings of Indigenous Culture. From all accounts

although the weather was poor, the participation and behaviour was great.

Today a number of students attended the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day at Yumba at the

Primary School. The morning was organised by Goondir Health and emphasised the importance of healthy habits. A

nurse spoke about immunization. The students participated in a number of Indigenous art and craft activities. A number

of awards were presented during the morning and we congratulate the following students who were nominated from

our school to receive awards:

Brady Dodd- Sport

Georgia Mailman - Academic Achievement

Jessica Mailman - School Attendance

Frankie Pride - Upholding School Values

Next week our Year 4 students go on their overnight camp to Highfields and I wish them a great two days of fun and

learning.

St Monica’s Day, the Patron Saint of our Parish and School will be celebrated on Sunday 14th August. I really encourage

all of our families to get involved in the morning’s activities as we endeavour to develop in our students an appreciation

and deep respect for the example of our religious heroes.

Mr Roland Poulton

Principal

Reminder:

Don’t forget that Friday 19th August is a Pupil Free Day so there will be no school. All our staff will be attending a professional devel-

opment day in Toowoomba with staff from other Catholic Schools in the

region.

Catholic Schools’ Netball Carnival

Last Thursday we went to Nell E Robinson Park in Toowoomba for the

annual Catholic Schools’ Netball Carnival. We played five games alto-

gether, winning three and going down in a close contest in the other

two games. This was a fantastic result as we were a combined Year

5/6 team playing in the Year 6 competition. We had a great day and

enjoyed the beautiful weather. Taylah and Emily

Catholic Schools’ Touch Football

Carnival

Last Thursday we had two teams complete in the Catholic Schools’ Touch Football Carnvial at Kearney's Spring in Toowoomba. Both teams played very well with great sportsman-ship and skill displayed.

APRE

Great and merciful God, Transform our hearts that are often ruled by judgment… And help us treat all people as equals. We pray that you help us as we carry out our vocations as carers of the young In our speaking, our listening, and our actions. Trusting in your grace and wisdom, may we be able to discern actions… That are consistent with a great and merciful heart. Amen Catholic Education Week: What a lovely way to celebrate the difference our Catholic schools make. Thank you to everyone who helped in supporting our activities, either through spotting acts of kindness, participating in our Mass, joining in class activities, or simply be-ing positive about what we do here as a school community. Your efforts were most appreciat-ed. St Monica’s Day Celebrations: August 14 is near ly upon us – I’ll stop nagging next week! Thank you to those people who are working on playing an active part in our celebra-tions through a role in the Mass, presentations, or food. We are hoping to have representa-tives of different cultures doing a prayer of the faithful in their own language and then in English so if you think you could do this, or bring along some food, please contact me via the school. Naturally we are wanting as many St Monica’s students as possible to attend this morning. Year 5 & 6 students are working on a presentation about our Australian culture.

(No need to wear uniforms). Please fill in the form below and return to school so we know whether you will be attending the mass and festivities. Please return to school by Tuesday 9th August. Until next week, try not to judge others, unless it is in determining how much you can help them. God bless.

Prep:

This week I completed the first formal reading assessments in Prep for the year. The students have been very excited about

demonstrating and articulating their learning. It is evident that many children have been practising and enjoying books daily

with family members. Congratulations to all students on their progress, but particularly those who have worked extra hard to

reach their goals. I endeavour to teach in partnership with families, and sincerely wish to help your child achieve their very

best, please support me to support them to realise their potential by reading daily. The children enthusiastically engaged with

our school excursion and had fantastic day of learning and appreciating Indigenous Culture. Thankyou Mrs Conneely for or-

ganising this trip.

Till next week Kind Regards

Ms Robyn Crisp

Year 1:

Wow! what a fabulous time students had at the Cobb and Co Museum on Wednesday, where we experienced many facets of Indigenous Culture. Thanks to Linda and Amanda who came to brave the cold and help on the day.

During Mathematics students have been looking at placing numbers on a number line. They are developing their understand-ing of the properties of 2Dimensional shapes and counting coins to set values.

This week we have continued our focus on using reading strategies to decode and interpret text during reading groups. Spelling words will relate to the sp and st blends. Handwriting is a major focus for the students this term. This week we have worked on the letters j, k and l. Next week we will work on m, n and o.

Students have been developing an awareness of health and wellbeing this week. They have identified and reflected on healthy food choices.

Mrs Chris Conneely

Visual Arts:

Over the past few weeks many of the students have been working hard on entries for competitions. This week students have been looking at painting techniques as they prepare for the Holy Name Art Show. 25 entries have been selected for submis-sion. Each child who has an entry into the competition will receive a brochure with details of the upcoming event. Parents and students are welcome to attend.

Where: Hall, Holy Name School

When: Friday September, 2nd 2016

Time: 5:30 - 9pm

Year 2 CA:

Year 2CA have been enjoying working with poetry this term. This week we have been looking at alliteration and onomatopoe-

ia. Alliteration is when most of the words in the sentence begin with the same sound. An example of this is Lucy licked Linda’s

lollypop. Onomatopoeia is the use of words that imitate sound. Examples of this are crash, bang, and woof! Students were

encouraged to use these words with expression.

In Science we have been discussing mixtures. The students have enjoyed experimenting with different mixtures and discussing

whether these combinations have changed, and how they have changed.

Please encourage your child to use the Look, Say (Spell), Cover, Write, Check strategy when practising their spelling words at

home. Many students are bringing in their homework with spelling words spelt incorrectly. It is important that they check

their work.

Have a great week and God Bless.

Year 2 LE:

The children and I have been very busy keeping up to date with our work to ensure a nice smooth return to class for Mrs Eck-hardt on Monday. This week, we have learnt some interesting facts about the beautiful country in which we live and did a won-derful job of colouring a map to show Australia's different climate zones.

A very big thank you to everyone for making me feel so welcome at St Monica's.

Mrs Jenny Shellshear

Year 3:

We have had a bit of the flu here in year 3, with a number of students and myself having some time off to recover. That aside

we have continued to learn about kilograms and grams in Mathematics. I hope you haven’t been driven mad with all the solar

system facts that students have been memorising. It is exciting to see the enthusiasm and sense of awe the students are show-

ing in science as we explore space. Just a note that library has been moved back to Tuesdays.

Mr Dylan Philp

Year 4:

Everyone is very excited to think that this time next week we will be on camp! We have been discussing the routines and activi-

ties that we will be participating in, as well as the expectations for behaviour, as representatives of St Monica’s. If you are yet to

return your child’s medical form, please do so as soon as possible.

Thank you to everyone who joined in our Catholic Education Week celebrations. It was wonderful to see so many families come

together to enjoy breakfast, Mass, classroom activities and morning tea. On Friday, the students also had a visit from the Japa-

nese students and they enjoyed joining in the activities organised in the classroom by our visitors.

This week in Maths, we have been working with money, calculating purchases and the amount of change to be given, as well as

completing more complex problem solving activities. In Science, we have been investigating gravity as part of our Smooth

Moves unit.

Mrs Kaylene Bruggemann

Year 5

This week in Religion students have been learning about Judaism and Jesus as a Jew. Students have been researching Shabbat

(the Sabbath) and its significance. During Maths lessons we have been continuing to develop our multiplication and division

skills. During English lessons we have been looking at structure of news articles and the meaning conveyed in the news article.

Students are excited about their upcoming Science research projects based on Deserts around the world. Don’t forget that

camp forms are due this Friday. Please make sure they are sent into school.

Have a great week

God Bless

Mrs Charmaine Tancred

Year 6

Camp permission slips are due tomorrow Friday at the latest. Please hand these direct to Mrs Tancred or myself so we can fol-

low up outstanding slips.

I will be conducting parent/teacher interviews in the coming weeks so I am able to catch up with you all before starting materni-

ty leave. Please return the Parent / Teacher Interview reply slip promptly so I can confirm your interview time with you.

Thank you

in fourth tem, at a date to be confirmed. Drama will be held on Wednesday lunch break in the Prep room this term. We are

seeking Script writers, editors, actors, stage design, props, costume, a director and producer. This is a fun relaxed group of

mixed ages, strengths and abilities. You need no prior knowledge or skill of drama to join the group. It is a great way to make

some new friends, build your confidence and learn a little about performance art and the behind the scenes art of production.

Please come along and check it out.

Critical Thinking and Problem Solving Sessions:

Over the past few weeks of this term a group of students have been working with me to develop an effective problem solving

process. At the moment we are exploring a process which firstly includes understanding and exploring before we begin a task,

secondly thinking and exploring to expand on the depth of a question and then before completion of the task learning the im-

portance of evaluating and refining the finished product to a much higher standard.

This process has been chosen because it has been designed as a way to optimise the potential for each individual to develop

and adopt more productive work habits.

Each day we begin with a whole group lesson where we learn new techniques which enable each member of the group to par-

ticipate in problem solving activities.

Our small group activities are based upon two goals:

The first is to develop comprehension with reading math problems so as to fully understand how to interpret why they are

being taught how to calculate and solve number problems.

Our second goal for this program is to support the students in developing their skills of sentence writing and editing to a high-

er level.

If any parent would like to discuss the program and the ideas being used to develop the skills of our students to a higher level,

please call in to see me on Wednesday or Thursday mornings before school.
