President’s Perspective Honorable Nacny A. Hopf, President

Were you as captivated by the Olympics as I was? As I watched the teams march in the opening ceremo-nies carrying their national flags, en-joyed the competition between the nations’ athletes, then watched the athletes mix at the conclusion of the games having a good time together, I couldn’t help but think about compe-tition, team work and what it means to be part of a group. Competition and working together toward a com-mon goal as a team are essential hu-man characteristics. We have lots of competitors in our organization too-- isn’t that the nature of our ad-versarial profession? There are times, though, when we want and need to set aside our identities as competitors and just be together in community. As incoming President, I’ve also been thinking a lot about com-munity as it is reflected and en-couraged in the Arapahoe County Bar Association. Some of us live in Arapahoe County, some work here. But our focus isn’t just geographical. Our Association provides a home and a community of shared values for those who enjoy the practice of law and honor the rule of law.

Our young lawyers move from firm to firm and try to figure out where and what they want to be in 5 or 10 years. Our experienced lawyers and judges participate as they transition to “senior” status. Want a group where you can find someone who’s been there, done that? Want to feel at home? The ACBA provides a community where competitors can sit down together and share a laugh at a meet and greet, share an idea at a business law lunch, work togeth-er on a House of Hope project, or honor our peers with a toast at the annual meeting after round of golf. Speaking of teamwork… I’m lucky to be taking the baton from DAVE STEVENS. He is a role model to us all-- he balanced home, law practice and community involvement while leading our organization and made it look so easy! We have a terrific vol-unteer leadership team this year. We welcome PAUL PRENDERGAST to the officer team as Secretary and LORI HULBERT (recipient of the Drinkwine Young Lawyer award) to the Board as Paul’s replacement. Check out the whole list of direc-tors and committee chairs. You can become part of the team by calling any of these folks to help out in your area of interest. Our Bar Association, one of the largest bar associations in Colorado, provides its terrific programs, CLE and social events due to the efforts and imagination of these leaders and the incredible skill and energy of our team coach and manager- ANGEL McCALL! So as we recall the Olympic spirit of teamwork and competition and move on to the partisan times ahead this fall, remember that whatever your party, stage of life or practice, we invite you to be in community with us at the Arapahoe County Bar Association. See you soon!

ACBA members have been invited to join this Douglas/Elbert Bar Dinner/CLE program. Susan Elkins and David S. Rolfe will introduce family law attorneys to ENE/ENA and discuss how it is being integrated into the family court process.

Early Neutral Evaluations/Assesments are innovative ideas designed to provide the parties to both pre-decree and post-decree dissolution of marriage cases and paternity cases with early, neutral feedback on their case from a multi-disciplinary female/male team who will then be available to facilitate settlement. An NEA/ENE assessment is quick and significantly less expensive than a full blown evaluation of an investigation by a child & family investigator or a parental rights evaluation. In many cases, the ENE/ENA will meet the mediation requirement. They are designed to complement those tools and to assist the parties in early settlement of their disputes.

Reserve by October 10th at 2:00 by e-mail to [email protected] . (You will pay at the door with cash or by a check payable to DEBA.)
