COMMUNITY NEWSLETTER SUMMER 2018

Madison and Whetsel updateAfter years of planning and preparation, Madisonville’s Neighborhood Business District is poised to see major investment in the form of new construction beginning this summer. A local team including Ackermann Group, Neyer Construction, and glassworks will start construction on the southwest corner of Madison & Whetsel later this summer.

The project includes 104 mixed-income residential units and 24,000 sf of office, restaurant, and retail space. The Madison Center across the street will see exterior improvements, the addition of a public plaza, and a renovated and expanded Braxton Cann Health Center, including the addition of a new dental clinic.

The project also includes streetscaping on all 4 blocks at Madison & Whetsel. Construction is expected to take approximately 18 months and the project will open in early 2020. It is also estimated that the project will generate 142 full-time construction jobs during the 18-month period, sometimes ballooning to 300 jobs during labor-intense periods.

For project updates, please see MCURC’s website at www.mcurc.org, follow us on Facebook, or come to Community Council meetings.

Construction is starting in July on four new homes, two on Peabody and two on Ravenna. The Madisonville Community Urban Redevelopment Corporation (MCURC) is partnering with the City of Cincinnati, the Hamilton County Land Reutilization Corporation, and Titan Real Estate Group to convert vacant land to single-family homes. The homes were listed earlier this year at $159,900 and were quickly under contract. Buyers worked with Titan Real Estate Group to pick preferred finishes.

The homes were made available for sale to buyers who were at or below 120% or less of area median income, which means that, with the grant from the City, MCURC was able to provide affordable new homes to middle income families. Two of the families already live in Madisonville and are excited about the opportunity to get larger homes without leaving the community they love.

But the news gets even better: on June 22, MCURC learned that we received another grant from the City to build five more homes, also on vacant lots! Keep an eye open for these homes to hit the market once all of the contract arrangements have been finalized with the City. With skyrocketing home prices all around us, MCURC is thrilled to be able to offer a high-quality, affordable option in the neighborhood. We are grateful to the community for your support of this program and to all of our partners who are helping to make this possible.

Welcome to our new neighbors

Madisonville Foraging Woodland Garden at Erie, Brotherton, Red BankDid you know that a Pawpaw is a native tree to Ohio and that it produces a delicious fruit that was a staple food for Native American Indians? Come and learn about it at the Madisonville Foraging Woodland Garden! Brand new colored signs now adorn the garden, full of fun facts and harvesting tips.

In May, the Go Local installed the signs and laid out a mulched path that invite visitors to discover what grows in the garden. A main garden sign with the name of the garden now welcomes visitors at each gateway, on Erie Ave and Brotherton Court. The two arbors include a box that also contains explanatory brochures with a map.

The garden is part of the Civic Garden Center network of neighborhood gardens. It relies solely on grants, donations, and volunteers for its maintenance and development.

If you would like to meet its co-coordinators, Karen Brown and Laurence Deprez, join one of our volunteer events.

Our next clean-up will be on Sat 25 August from 9:30 to 12:30.

The garden has its own Facebook page “Madisonville Foraging Woodland Garden”.

Madisonville Cares, the crisis response committee of the Madisonville Community Council, will have its quarterly roundtable on July 25th at 5:30 pm at St Anthony’s.

The committee is a coalition of churches, service organizations, and residents who want to help their neighbors in times of crisis. By presenting our activities at the roundtable, we’re better able to collaborate on projects and have a larger collective impact than any organization could have alone.

Additionally, the roundtable will serve a clearinghouse for volunteer opportunities. Residents who want to engage in direct service to benefit their neighbors will be presented with an number of ongoing projects in Madisonville.

Food will be provided.

Madisonville Cares Roundtable

Students in grades 4-6 participated in the Roadmap to Freedom project. They traced the Underground Railroad, while learning about the environmental, historical, and global implications during that time period.

Students travelled from Maysville, Kentucky to the John P Parker House in Ripley, Ohio and to Ontario, Canada. This is what the students had to say about their journey:

Crossing the Border: On Wednesday, we woke up and went to the border of Canada. We had to get off the bus and give the officers at the border our passport to cross over to Canada and went to our hotel in my room. We had a nice view of Niagara Falls, lit up with beautiful colors like a rainbow.

Riding the Boat at Niagara Falls: In Canada, we got up and went on a boat ride on the Niagara Falls Rivers, close to the falls. We got wet because of the mist from the falls.

The Wild Herd: On Friday, we got up and packed. We went to the border with our passport. Next, we went through New York. Our bus driver said that we would see a wild herd, but they were plastic buffalo by the side of the road. We all laughed.

John P Parker grade 3 students study recycling first-hand

Work has begun on the rehabilitation of the historic Metz House at 6111 Madison Road. The Metz House was the residence and office of Dr. Charles Louis Metz, obstetrician, archeologist, school board member and all around “Mr. Madisonville.” Over the past few years, MCURC has raised almost $400,000 to save this important historic structure. This will be MCURC’s second historic renovation; the first was the Bank Building at the corner of Madison & Whetsel in 2016.

Once the renovation is complete, the building will become home to small office users, including MCURC. We envision the space as attractive to entrepreneurs, people who have outgrown a home office, and small nonprofits. MCURC is doing everything we can to rehab the building with historic accuracy.

Contact Matt at 271-2495 to learn more about the available space. And you can follow the construction progress on the Metz House Facebook page @HistoricMetzHouse

John P Parker’s grade 3 students decided to study recycling as part of their Global Environmental Literacy focus this year. Teachers integrated science, social studies, mathematics, and writing into the project, which also included field excursions to Greenacres and Rumpke’s landfill.

After learning that plastics are one of the least degradable materials in the world, they decided they wanted to impact the amount of plastics in the landfill by recycling plastic caps into a bench.

In May, we counted and added up our caps into bunches of 50 lbs in trash bags. With the help of our community businesses like Cincinnati Public Schools Treasurer’s Office at the Board of Education, as well as Artsville, Lala’s, Cookoo’s, and others, we were able to collect 527 lbs of caps.

Students traveled to Evansville, Indiana, the boyhood home of President Abraham Lincoln. There, we recycled our caps into benches and received plastic animals as souvenirs.

Upon returning, we learned that a school in Oberlin needed additional caps to reach their goal. Our students donated their excess to them to assist those students with reaching their goal. Our students kept 527 lbs of plastic out of our local landfill.

Metz House rehab has begun
