Good News Week In this world of rush, rush, we often focus on a deficit model of communication and feedback. Good News Week is a proactive focus to reverse this trend of focusing purely on the negative in an unconstructive manner. As they say a positive will take you further than any negative.

What to do:

1. Look for the positives around you

2. Communicate the positives by thanking the person for their contribution

3. Watch the sharing of positives grow with the knowledge of everyone reinforcing what works!

If you want to do this in a written form, you will find ‘Peace Mails’ or ‘Good News Postcards’ in the office.

Name Calling and Rumouring – Being ProactiveFrom time to time, we have issues with students name calling, swearing and spreading gossip. While for some people this may seem like an insignificant problem, we see it as a very serious matter that requires specific attention.

In an environment where we want to encourage risk taking in learning for all, inappropriate social behaviour seriously undermines learners’ willingness to have a go.

It is sometimes difficult for some to tolerate the differences in others. Being different sometimes means that we just don’t understand that person well enough. It should not be an excuse to condemn that person for their perceived differences.

We actively encourage our students to develop tolerance and understanding of others. In the vast majority of cases, a simple reminder and refocus is all students need.

If students in Year 6 to 10 resort to harassment, we use the following process to reinforce our school’s position on harassing behaviours.

1. In the first instance a verbal warning to the student or students is provided usually with an outline of how and why the behaviour is not acceptable in a learning environment.

2. A series of 3 written warnings are then issued for any further infringements. This involves a letter to the student and one to the parents outlining the unacceptable behaviour and expectations.

3. With the third written warning, the matter is referred to the Administration team to discuss whether school disciplinary absences should be applied.

If you receive a letter that outlines that your child has been treating others unfairly, please realise that we have gathered information on the incident from a variety of sources, that your child has had an opportunity to outline their position, that verbal warnings have been discussed previously with appropriate behaviour alternatives being outlined and that the behaviour seriously undermines a culture that supports learning.

You can help by assisting your child in their learning journey by:

Reinforcing behaviours that are socially acceptable and discussing and encouraging socially acceptable behaviours that can be applied to their situation.

Contacting your child’s class or form teacher to discuss the matter. If we don’t know about an issue, we cannot do anything about it.

If your child is being subjected to name calling, encourage them to disclose the details to their class teacher so that we can observe the situation to collect information for action.

Encourage your child not to report malicious gossip back to the subject of the gossip as this is what the perpetrator wants. Report the malicious gossip to adults so that investigation and action can be taken to reveal the source. It is much harder to take effective action

when the subject has retaliated in a similarly inappropriate manner.

Report matters promptly. It is very hard to verify issues that occurred last week let alone last month, so please report matters promptly while students can still remember what actually happened.

Encourage your child to have resilient thoughts like, ‘Am I really a XXX? Does that person’s opinion really matter? Who can I be with that will support me at this time? Practise socially acceptable replies like, ‘I am sorry you see it that way but we don’t speak like that around here.’ Get some help for the person who has trouble speaking appropriately.

These learnings take time and considerable effort from all concerned but to say and do nothing condones and reinforces the unacceptable behaviour and provides no opportunity for social learning.

Curriculum InsertUsing Language CreativelyLiteracy involves using language to communicate effectively and to make meaning and sense of the world. Sometimes we are required to interpret and use language creatively, where words and phrases might be used in unexpected and unfamiliar ways.

There are many ideas you can try to encourage your child to use language creatively. These include:

describing people, places, events and objects in unusual and unexpected ways, as is done in poetry, plays, cartoons and videos

locating ways in which other speakers and writers use language in creative ways, for example, puns and word plays in TV and magazine advertisements, rhyming and repeated sounds in picture books and reading the by-lines and captions in newspapers

discussing favourite sayings and creating new ones together

sharing a love of language by talking about how language is used in different contexts and situations. Talk about your favourite poems, plays and stories and discuss with your child what you like about the author’s style.

Bookweek Dress upOn Tuesday August 22, students and staff are encouraged to participate in Bookweek by dressing up as a book character or in the theme, Escape to Everywhere. Simple low or no cost items often create the best costumes, so please think outside the square and maybe just come up with a prop. There is no cost to this participation, however it does generate quite a bit of excitement within the school. Bookweek is about reading and sharing the wonderful books in our lives. Consider sharing your favourite book with others.

Daffodil DayOn Friday August 25, students can recognise Daffodil Day by wearing something yellow. Clothing needs to be sunsafe and meet the same requirements that school uniform usually does. An optional coin donation will be collected by the student councillors to be passed on to the Cancer Council to contribute to their research and family support services. We are doing this to assist students to recognise issues that impact on our community as a whole, and how we can all play a small part to a bigger picture.
