EYFS Pilot Visit This week Reception and Nursery were very excited to have a visit from one of our parents, who is a pilot. Pilot Ed talked to the children about what his job entails and the different parts of an aeroplane. He shared photos with the children and then answered any questions they had about being a pilot. At the end of the discussion, the children had the opportunity to try on pilot and cabin crew hats. The children have learnt about lots of different types of air transport this week, maybe you could challenge your child to see if they remember all of them? Mrs Webb

Curriculum Focus...Design and Technology

Miss Kirwan- Design and Technology Leader

I am delighted to see how much our children enjoy their Design and Technology lessons at school and their

enthusiasm is clear to see when I observe lessons across the academy.

Design and Technology gives pupils the opportunity to develop their own ideas and we certainly have seen

creativity being nurtured at Mayflower I am very much looking forward to seeing the outcome

of their projects this term! Miss Kirwan – Design and Technology Leader

Intent: Introduction, Vision and Philosophy At Harris Mayflower we believe that a high-quality Design and Technology curriculum should engage, inspire and challenge pupils. The intent is to develop human creativity by equipping students with the skills to experiment, invent, create and evaluate. Design and technology inspires pupils to use their creativity and imagination to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems. Pupils acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. Pupils learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. By doing this it enables the children to have a purpose in their creations whilst understanding the importance to their functionality.

Pupils in Year 5 made prototypes of their gingerbread houses from paper before

making them from gingerbread.

Pupils in Year 3 designed, made, tested and evaluated boats made from a variety

of materials.

Implementation: What does DT look like at Mayflower? Overview: Our academy uses the National Curriculum in England framework for Design and Technology. In KS1 and 2, pupils receive 1 hour of Design and Technology teaching each week and the learning opportunities can be divided into three main areas:

Investigative, Disassembly and Evaluative Activities (IDEAs) These activities provide opportunities for the pupils to explore existing products and to gain skills, knowledge and understanding which can be applied in a design and make assignment. Focused Practical Tasks (FPTs) Focused practical tasks provide opportunities to learn and practice particular skills and knowledge Design and Make Assignments (DMAs) A design and make assignment provides an opportunity for pupils to combine their skills, knowledge and understanding to develop products that meet a perceived need, for example, a shield for a warrior. In general DMAs in Key Stage One will tend to be shorter in duration and, as pupils move towards the end of Key Stage Two, their designing and making will become more complex and therefore more time consuming. Questions to ask your child about what they know and remember? Year 1 (Unit of work: Food Technology- Fruit Salads) Why is it important to eat fruit? What are two of the ways that fruit can be prepared before being eaten?

Year 2: (Unit of work: Textiles, templates and joining techniques- Bendy bags)

What is a design brief? Why should designers make a prototype before creating a product?

Year 3: (Textiles, 2D shape to 3D product-Money holder/wallet) True or false? A money holder needs to be functional. Name one feature of an effective money holder.

Year 4: (Electrical Systems, simple circuits and switches: Night lights)

Can you three different light sources? What can light be used for?

Year 5: Structures, Frame structures: Bird cage What do we meant by a temporary structure? Can you explain what a ‘design brief’ is?
