“While no data can replace the magic that happens

between a teacher and a student, we can harness the

science of learning to illuminate each student’s path to

discovery.”

Teaching is an art that can be improved with the addition of science. At City Beach Primary School, we understand the importance of positive relationships with our students to support their growth. We use our experience and practice as compassionate educators to create connections. These connections allow us to know each child as a learner. These teacher student connections are made more meaningful and deliberate when combined with data and research.

Our teachers use assessment data and research throughout the year for learning, and to help each child make the progress they are capable of making over the year. We are constantly looking at ways to use the data we collect about each child to improve their learning and impact positively on progress. This is an area that is constantly changing and teachers put energy and effort towards practising and mastering the science of teaching.

An example of how we use data to impact on students learning is the NAPLAN assessments completed on line. We use the data suites available to us to identify gaps and target individual student needs. The data guides our planning for student progress and identifies whole school focus areas to be addressed through our operational plans.

This year in Year 3 & 5 our NAPLAN mean in Numeracy, Reading and Writing assessments were at or above like schools. In Grammar and Punctuation our Year 3 student mean was above that of like schools while our Year 5 student mean sat below. In Spelling both year level means were below that of like schools. We use this information to look for gaps in our curriculum delivery from a year level perspective and also use the data to look specifically at individual students to identify areas of need. The science of using data to improve the outcomes our students are able to achieve is always a focus for our teaching, in the school improvement cycle.

A summary of our NAPLAN data is shared with the School Board and always included in our annual report. Keep an eye out for our 2019 Annual Report – it’s a comprehensive and informative read and is published at the end of Term 1 2020.

The generosity of our school community never ceases to amaze me. Our fundraising goal of $3 000 for the Rainbow Run presented by Space Realty this weekend, has been reached and surpassed!

There are over 190 registrations so far and the event will be capped at 250 registrations – so please don’t delay if you haven’t already registered –

Bread Tags and Fairy Bread in Room 7

Congratulations Year 1 Room 7 for collecting 197 grams of bread tags for the Bread

Tags for Wheelchairs program. Collectively the whole school stopped over half a

kilogram of tags going to landfill. As a special reward Room 7 made fairy bread,

which after a busy week at swimming was a great way to boost energy and

enthusiasm. Please keep your bread tags and we will start collecting them in 2020.

Please note that all recycling undertaken at CBPS will stop on Friday 13 December.

This will give us time to send the items we have collected to the appropriate places

for recycling. We will resume our recycling initiatives in 2020.

Student Leadership 2020

Yesterday the 2019 student leaders spoke to the Year 5 group about their experiences as school leaders this

year. They described the benefits of being a leader including being involved in the planning of school events,

greeting special guests and getting to know and be known by the younger students in the school. The

challenges they described were talking in front of the school and on City Beach Radio as well as managing

their time to complete work missed when undertaking leadership duties. They encouraged all the students to

have a go and nominate for a position a leadership position.

Notes with all the details of student leadership will be sent home with the Year 5 students today.

Nominations close on Thursday 28 November. Nominees will present their speeches to the Year 3 to Year 6

students on Tuesday 3 December from 10:15am in the library. Students and teachers will then vote. A special

stand up assembly will be held on Friday 6 December to announce 2020 leadership team to the school and

present them with their badges. The first role of the leadership team will be in assisting with the Year 6

Graduation on Wednesday 18 December.

Orientation Days for Kindy to PP and PP to Year 1

As the year draws to a close we start our planning for 2020. A part of this is the transition of our Kindergarten

and Pre-primary students. On Wednesday 27 November the Kindy students will go to the Pre-primary class

for a session in the morning, while the Pre-primary class will go to the Year One class to see what happens in

the “big school.” As the Pre-primary students have been enjoying having lunch in the school for several

weeks, they are very familiar with the school and are well-known to the other staff and students. This should

make the transition to Year One a smooth process.

Kindy – Pre-primary 2020 Parent Information session

The date of these two information sessions has been changed. We

will now be having one information session for both Kindy and Pre-

primary parents on Thursday 5 December at 9am in the library for

about an hour. The early childhood staff will talk to parents to

provide information about the programs for 2020. There will also

be some representatives from other community groups that

support the students at CBPS.

We look forward to welcoming our new parents and catching up

with familiar faces at City Beach Primary School for the Kindy and

Pre-primary Information Session on:

Thursday 5 December at 9am in the library.

Special Assembly Thursday 12 December @9am – Farewell to Kerry and Laurel

This year we farewell two of our fantastic and long standing staff members of City

Beach Primary School. Kerry Larson and Laurel Godfrey will both we retiring at

the end of the year and to say an official farewell we will be having a special

assembly on Thursday 12 December at 9am. Please come along to say a huge

thank you to these special ladies who have touched the lives of so many of our

students in the collective 33 years they have been at CBPS.

If you know of other past families and students who would like to come and

farewell Kerry and Laurel at the assembly, please let them know of the details of

this event.

Board News

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

The City Beach Primary Board met last week for the last meeting of 2019.

We had a packed agenda, but the highlights included:

Agreeing the process for an election for the three nominated parent

representatives.

A detailed review and discussion on the 2019 NAPLAN results with solid

improvement across several key metrics. The Board was very interested to hear

from Mari about the detailed data analysis that is completed on NAPLAN data and

then how these findings are used to adapt learning and teaching practices - both for individual students and

for the school.

The Board reviewed the draft budget for 2020 and the planned annual school contributions. With enrolment

numbers growing steadily it is critical that the budget be tightly managed to ensure continuation of all

programs. Voluntarily contribution payments are an important part of the budget, especially in 2020, so all

families are encouraged to ensure these payments are made.

The Board discussed risk management and is progressing with a risk assessment tool that will allow the

school to focus on key risks and implement mitigation strategies.

The Board reviewed the schools progress against the 2020 Business Plan strategy of “Building Community”.

The school has made significant progress against these metrics including strong partnerships with the

Japanese School in Perth, with universities and local community groups. Key relationships are also in

excellent health such as with the P&C and the wider school community, and the school is regularly favourably

featured in media and social media.

This was the last meeting for Rochelle King who has served a full three-year term as a parent representative,

and crucially, as Board Secretary. Rochelle has done a fantastic job fulfilling both roles and her contributions,

and organisational skills, will be sorely missed. Please when you see Rochelle thank her for the significant

contribution she has given.

Lino Printmaking

This term, the Year 6 students have been busy earning their lino licence. To obtain a licence, the students

had to demonstrate how to use lino cutting tools safely. Every student received a licence on their first

attempt. The next step will be to produce an edition of five prints.

P&C President News

Our Rainbow Run and Sundowner is this weekend!! The only P&C Event of Term 4 -

‘Rainbow Run Presented by Space Realty’ is to be held on Saturday the 23rd of

November (2:30 PM) followed by the classic P&C Sundowner. (5:30 PM)

We would greatly appreciate if you could:

Stronger Communities Programme

Recently the P&C was invited to apply for a grant from the Stronger Communities

Programme by the Federal Member for Curtin, Celia Hammond MP. The grant was

applicable for projects that contribute to the community (not just the school) and

our quadrangle resurface was suitable as it is used by the broader community (e.g.

before/after school sports and weekend activities).

It is my pleasure to announce that the P&C has been awarded a grant to the value

of $10,000 which greatly assists in the overall funding. The P&C would like to thank

the office of Celia Hammond for inviting us to apply for the grant and helping us

through the process.

P&C Vacancies

Jo Fuller, Brooke Lundy and Suzie Starr will be stepping down from P&C Canteen

Liaison duties at the end of the year and so the P&C are seeking expressions of

interest from one or more parents/caregivers who are interested in getting

involved in 2020. This will enable the P&C to continue to offer and improve this

valuable service. The P&C would like to thank Jo, Brooke and Suzie for their effort in running the canteen this

year.

YearBook 2019

Thank you to everyone who has ordered a yearbook (over 100 books ordered!).

For those who have not got around to paying as yet, please transfer $28 (per book) to the P&C account (016-

305, 340901657) or you can leave cash for Sandra Fox (P&C Treasurer) in the front office (P&C drop

box). Books are being printed and are expected to be delivered in a few weeks.

Canteen News

Thank you for your support of the canteen and with the different foods we have been trying out this term,

including apple pikelets, mango smoothies and last week’s one-off lunch special of Chicken Noodle & Veg stir

fry. Next week’s cookie special: Gingerbread Stars.

Pizza Update

Homemade pizzas will be back on the menu from next Tuesday 26 November due to popular request, using

pizza dough made on the premises, Rachel’s napolitana sauce (which is made with mushroom, celery, carrot,

leek, zucchini and tomato) and a choice of ham & cheese or ham, cheese & pineapple toppings.

The pizzas from Just Pizza will still be available to purchase on Tuesdays but we will be increasing the portion

size (another survey request) so the price will go up a little to reflect this.

School Lunch Online

Monday 11 November we launched our trial of School Lunch Online, an external provider which offers a range

of hot food, sandwiches, sushi, sweet treats and drinks that are prepared and delivered by a local provider

(Chef’s Delight). We will continue to offer this on a trial basis on Mondays for the rest of the term in addition

to and separate from normal canteen operations on Tuesdays and Fridays (thus no recess/window sales on

Mondays).

view the menu, set up your child under their room number (nb. PP = ECB3) and ensure your order is placed by

8am on Mondays. Lunches are delivered to the fridge/area outside Room 1 (the Year 5/6 classroom) for

students to collect.

Whilst we are not currently relying on volunteers it’s always lovely to see parents/ grandparents in the canteen

so feel free to pop by or contact me or Rachel if you’d like to stop by to help with window sales, food prep or

baking on Tuesdays/ Fridays.
