The Magic Flute (German: Die Zauberflöte pronounced [ˈdiː ˈtt saʊʊ bɐˌfløːtə]), K. 620, is an opera in two acts by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart to a German libretto by Emanuel Schikaneder. The work is in the form of a Singspiel, a popular form during the time it was written that included both singing and spoken dialogue.[a] The work was premiered on 30 September 1791 at Schikaneder's theatre, the Freihaus-Theater auf der Wieden in Vienna, just two months before the composer's premature death.

In this opera, the Queen of the Night persuades Prince Tamino to rescue her daughter Pamina from captivity under the high priest Sarastro; instead, he learns the high ideals of Sarastro's community and seeks to join it. Separately, then together, Tamino and Pamina undergo severe trials of initiation, which end in triumph, with the Queen and her cohorts vanquished. The earthy Papageno, who accompanies Tamino on his quest, fails the trials completely but is rewarded anyway with the hand of his ideal femalecompanion Papagena.

From the bookshelf

Last year’s publication by Monash University Publishing of “Half the Perfect World – Writers, Dreamers and Drifters on Hydra, 1955-1964” by Paul Genoni and Tanya Dalziell, along with the University of NSW’s publication this year of Sue Smith’s new play “Hydra”, have quite naturally sent me back to my bookshelf to reread some of the famous books by those two significant and much loved Australian writers GeorgeJohnston and Charmian Clift.

Their combined oeuvre is of course considerable, and their fans will certainly have read the whole or most of it, but I will restrict myself to recommending just five books, which can be read separately, but which can also be found in collected editions.

A simple click on Google nowadays will tell you all you may wish to know about Johnston and Clift. If, however, you are not online and unfamiliar with them, then it is enough to know that this couple, as did many other Australian artists and writers, left a rather uninspiring Australia in the 1950s to live in Europe. For Johnston and Clift London proved to be even more dismal than Sydney, and in 1954 they decided to live on the remote Greek island of Kalymnos. Clift describes their year there in herfascinating book “Mermaid Singing”.

Desirous of a little more “civilisation” and an education for their children, in 1955 they moved to Hydra (about 2 hours by ferry from Athens) where they lived until 1964. Clift describes their life there in “Peel Me a Lotus”, which more than hints at

the marital tensions which were developing.

Johnston’s book dealing with this period is “Clean Straw for Nothing”, the second book in his semi-autobiographical Meredith Trilogy, between the very well known “My Brother Jack” and “A Cartload of Clay”.

Australians regularly visit Hydra to take “selfies” in front of the “Australian House” and to pay homage to two great Australian writers, whose five books mentioned above will give the reader both a thoughtful Mediterranean break and a deeper insight into the human condition.
