Dear Friends
As I write this welcome message, the clocks have gone forward and we are now into British Summer
Time. I’m never sure whether it’s best to have an extra hour or, in this case, get to bed an hour earlier!
However, it’s lovely to see the spring sunshine again.
We have just held our AGM, marking my first completed year as chairman, and I would like to thank you
all for your support and encouragement of our committee volunteers who have worked so hard for us.
As mentioned in the last newsletter, we tried something new at our AGM by showing you some of the
hundreds of photographs taken by members over the course of the last year. I thought the standard of
the photographs was first class, and my thanks to Val Hirth for assembling them into a slide show of the
various destinations. It is perhaps in this way that we can appreciate the wide spectrum of places of
interest that we visit. I hope this show gave plenty of encouragement to sign up for as many trips as
possible!
On a completely different tack, did you happen to see the obituary of Dame Jennifer Jenkins (wife of Roy
Jenkins)? Dame Jenkins has died at the age of 96 years and I for one did not know of or appreciate her
role as chair of the National Trust. She was born in Buxton where we were based for last year’s NT
holiday and was the daughter of Sir Parker Morris who drew up the standards for council housing. Her
career included school teaching, Chairman of the Consumers’ Association, member of the British
Standards and Design Council and the Historic Buildings Council. More relevant to us, she oversaw the
addition of over 50 villages and hamlets to the NT and half the coastline of Britain, including the (topical)
White Cliffs of Dover. She also reactivated the Neptune Campaign, a vital project to protect our
coastline. To her credit, she was instrumental in taking the NT forward at a time when it might have
been split over the controversial subject of hunting.
In closing, I look forward to joining with you at our monthly meeting and summer outings, and would
ask again for volunteer(s) to organise our outings for the next winter period.

MEMBERSHIP
The annual subscription of £12 each is due for renewal on 1st JANUARY 2017. The renewal form is
included with this newsletter. If you do not attend the meetings or wish your membership ticket posted
to you, please send me a stamped addressed envelope. Twenty members have not paid their
membership yet. Unfortunately for one reason or another several members have not renewed.
We need to boost our membership so do not forget to spread the word to family and friends and please
remember to let me know if you change your address or if you now have an email address. If you bring
along a visitor the charge is only £2. Please make sure that the visitor comes and sees me.
Our condolences to Janice Ford whose husband Mike sadly passed away in December. Mike was always
one of the first to come forward at the end of the meetings to help put the chairs and tables back and to
help carry the boxes of books and bric-a-brac to the storage cupboards.
National Trust Senior Membership Rates
You may not know that if you are over 60 and have been a National Trust member for at least five years
within the last ten years, you can convert to Senior Membership which means a 25% discount on adult

NEWSLETTERS
Let me know if you have anything you would like to contribute to our newsletters that may be of interest
to our members. The publication dates are the Thursday of our meetings in January, April, July and
October. You will have to let me have any articles or interesting facts at least two weeks before the date
of the meetings in each of the months stated.
If you do not attend our monthly meetings to collect your newsletters, we would be obliged if you could
send 2 medium size stamped addressed envelopes to cover the July and October newsletters. This will
help cut our postage costs. (It would normally be 4 stamped envelopes for the year but as this is the
second newsletter for 2017 you need only send 2).
Also, if you live in a block of flats that has a locked main door which prohibits the newsletter being put
through your own letterbox, please send me medium sized stamped addressed envelopes. Our stalwart
Chairman and Treasurer who kindly deliver these newsletters have come across this problem.
Don’t forget to let me know if you are now on the internet so your newsletter can be emailed to you.
PLEASE NOTE – As I’m on holiday when the July newsletter is due the committee have agreed that this will
be issued at the August meeting.

THEATRE GROUP
On Tuesday 28th March 41 of us went along to the matinee performance of “Beautiful” - the Carole King
Musical – thoroughly enjoyed the look back to the music of our youth! I’m looking at tickets for later in
the year at a price we can afford!

REFRESHMENTS/BRIC-A-BRAC & BOOKS
Volunteers are always needed for the refreshments – there’s very little washing up involved! We have
very few male volunteers yet I’m sure that men are perfectly able to pour hot water into a cup!
Your bric-a-brac is always welcome but, unfortunately, due to lack of storage space, we cannot take large
items.
I thought you might be interested to know that I take any items or books which have been around for
some time to St Luke’s Hospice charity shop in Wembley. As they are gift aided I receive notification
from them to let me know how much they have raised on the items I take along. October 2016 to
February 2017 it was £112.93 – so we are helping another very worthy cause.

SUMMER HOLIDAY - DEVON HIGHLIGHTS - 8th to 13th October 2017.
There has been a good response to this holiday. Thank you to all the members for booking early.
We will be staying at the family run 3 star Langstone Cliff Hotel set in 19 acres of woodland on the
beautiful South Coast of Devon nestled in the heart of Dawlish Warren.
There are only three double/twin rooms available and there is a waiting list for single rooms so if you
have any relations or friends who would like to join us please contact me for a full itinerary and booking

You can join at any time of the year deducting £1 per share for each month you have missed. Each share
in the club costs £12 and you may purchase as many shares as you like giving you more chances to win a

You MUST be a member of the Wembley & District Centre of the National Trust but you can purchase
shares if you are a non-National Trust member.

WINTER OUTINGS
We have now finished our winter outings for this session. Thanks to all of you who have supported them
and hence contributed to the fund for our Centre.
You will recall from our Chairman’s letter in the January newsletter that Diane White is stepping down
from organising some of the outings. A request was made for someone to take over her role but so far
there has been no response. I am unable to do these outings on my own therefore unless anyone
comes forward by the end of May there will be no more winter outings!

I am a Seenager (Senior teenager).
I have everything that I wanted as a teenager only 60 years later.
I don’t have to go to school or work.
I get an allowance every month.
I don’t have a curfew.
I have a driver’s license and my own car.
The people I hang around with are not scared of getting pregnant and they do not use drugs.
And I don’t have acne.
Being Old Is Great!
An old woman was asked - at your ripe age, what would you prefer to get Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s?
The woman answered - definitely Parkinson’s - better to spill half my wine than to forget where I keep the
bottle.

LECTURES
Thursday 18th May – Brent Volunteer Police Cadets - by Jamie Steele
Jamie Steele of the Metropolitan Police will tell us about the work he does with the Brent Volunteer
Police Cadets and their place in the community. He will take a questions and answers session and the
cadets will be in attendance to show us their drilling skills. Those of you who have been to Diva Opera in
December at St Andrew’s Church will have seen their skills and support of that evening. Do come along
and learn and support them.
Thursday 15th June – The Battle of Waterloo - by Rupert Matthews
Rupert is a well-known speaker having visited other National Trust groups. We all know of the Battle of
Waterloo which took place on 18th June 1815, but I am sure you will be interested to know more about
this momentous event in European History.
Thursday 20th July – George III and Queen charlotte and their connections in West London - by
Andrea Cameron.
Always a popular speaker, Andrea returns to us with another of her interesting talks of our history.
George III is one of the longest reigning monarch in British History and during a period of extraordinary
advancement in the arts. sciences and manufacturing. This has been completed overshadowed by his
image as the mad king and as the monarch who lost America.
Thursday 17th August – World Heritage sights in Great Britain and Ireland - by Frank Weare
Frank is a well-known lecturer and a chartered civil and structural engineer. His wish is to show some of
the magnificent architecture and designated UNESCO World Heritage sites here in Great Britain and
Ireland and to share his joy with travellers who want to appreciate and understand their fascination and
beauty as well. Most of you will have visited some of these sites, maybe with the National Trust but
were you aware that they were listed by UNESCO as Heritage sites.
Thursday 21st September – by Tony Earle
Tony returns after a few years absence to tell us about the London Underground, from its inception to
the present day. It is the oldest underground system in the world and how, every day, thousands of
commuters, tourists and Londoners use the tube service to travel around London. The London
Underground system is an iconic and important part of the city, as much part of London as black cabs,
Big Ben and over-priced pints. Have you ever stopped to wonder how it got there? Tony will explain all.
Thursday 19th October – Patrick, Father of the Bronte’s - by Colin Pinney
Colin will present his live One Man Show, about Patrick Bronte, a former priest from Northern Ireland.
He outlived all his children and his wife by 40 years. Described as “strange” and a “half-mad” man who
was not naturally fond of children, he has been regarded as a cold and unfeeling man who terrorised his
family with sudden outbursts of temper. This show includes the verse of Bramwell and Emily Bronte –
with Charlottes’ comments!!!

SUMMER OUTINGS 2017
RNLI College Discovery Tour There is a small waiting list Tuesday 30th May
Poole, Dorset
There will be time in Poole, where there are numerous places to eat and shop, or wander around the
harbour. At 2.30 we have a 90-minute tour of the RNLI college to find out how their crews and
lifeguards are trained. The tour explores the training facilities, including their world class Sea Survival
centre, which hosts the wave tank and Lifeboat simulator. There will be time for a cup of tea before we
leave for home.

Sissinghurst Castle Garden NT
Nr Cranbrook, Kent Saturday 17th June
The garden at Sissinghurst Castle in the Weald of Kent is among the most famous gardens in England
and is Grade I listed. It was created in the 1930s by Vita Sackville-West and her husband Harold
Nicolson. The garden itself is designed as a series of 'rooms', each with a different character of colour
and/or theme. There is the Granary Restaurant serving meals using their own ingredients from their
vegetable plot, fresh cakes and drinks.

Compton Verney Saturday 15th July
Warwickshire
Compton Verney is an award-winning art gallery housed in a Grade 1 Listed Mansion. Set in 120 acres of
‘Capability’ Brown parkland within the beautiful Warwickshire countryside. There are 6 permanent
collections of art from around the world. Our visit will start with a free introductory talk and then a
group tour of the exhibition. There is a cafe and restaurant for lunch or afternoon tea.

Petersfield and Goodwood House Tuesday 22nd August
West Sussex
We stop in the town of Petersfield where we can purchase lunch and have a walk around before re-
joining the coach for the short ride to Goodwood House. Goodwood is the seat of the Dukes of
Richmond, Lennox, Gordon & Aubigny, whose family art collection is one of the greatest in any English
country house. We have a guided tour of the house followed by tea and scones before the journey
home.

Audley End House Saturday 23rd September
Saffron Walden, Essex
Explore this Jacobean mansion house and meet the staff in the Victorian Service Wing. Wander the
tranquil gardens created by 'Capability' Brown and enjoy the stunning views across the unspoilt Essex
countryside. There is a Servants Hall tea room with locally-sourced hot and cold meals, drinks and
snacks. There are also light refreshments in the Cart Yard cafe.

An Interesting Fact
Brent is the most ancient borough name of all. Brent predates the Anglo-Saxons and even the Romans,
it comes from a Celtic word meaning 'holy one' or 'high place'. A river of the same name still flows
through the borough. It is one of only a handful of pre-Roman names still in use in the London area,
along with Penge, Thames and London itself.

CANCELLATIONS:
Cancellation within 14 Days of outing - If seat is not filled a 50% charge will be made.
Cancellation within 24 hours - no refund will be given.
Some trips have to be paid for in advance - in these cases no refund will be made.
GENERAL: Members are reminded that an amount for a gratuity for the driver is included in the amount you have
paid for the outing. Should you find yourself unable to attend an outing please telephone to let me know you are
not coming, even if this is fairly late on the evening before the outing. We may have members on a waiting list who
could take your place. When visiting National Trust properties and other similar properties you are asked to ensure
that you are wearing suitable footwear – NO SHARP HEELS.
SAFETY & INSURANCE
Members and guests who participate in visits do so entirely at their own risk and the Wembley & District Centre or
other participants cannot accept any liability.
A reminder that the National Trust insurance does not cover people over 80 years old and therefore anyone to
whom this applies should be aware of this.
Also, please use your seat belt when travelling as, in the unlikely event of an accident, insurance companies will not
pay out if the seat belt is not being used.
Members are advised that many properties and grounds have steps, slopes and uneven surfaces that require extra
care. Good sturdy shoes are a must. If you are unable to cope unassisted for whatever medical, physical or other
reason throughout an excursion you must bring a carer with you as neither the organiser nor participants of an
excursion can be responsible for you. The carer need not be a member of the National Trust.
ICE (In Case of Emergency): Please ensure you put a number to be contacted in the case of emergency under “ICE”
on your mobile and carry an ICE Card (or some form of note) with you, giving the name of a person to contact in an
emergency and a list of your medication.
ALWAYS HAVE YOU NATIONAL TRUST MEMBERSHIP CARD WITH YOU as an unscheduled stop may be made.
If changes have to be made you will advised if there were reasonable time in which to do so.
Non-National Trust members will have to pay entry fees at all National Trust Properties
