– Debbie Ayres

Congratulations go to several of our members, this week. Firstly to Peter Beddek, who has received Honours in the Laurie Thomas National Landscape Competition for his image, Waikanae Estuary Dawn, and also three acceptances in the same competition. See inside for more noteworthy accomplishments of our members... The club is planning several fieldtrips in the next few months. Peter has included notes in this edition about two proposed fieldtrips to Makara and Soames Island respectively, and a flyer about a 3-day excur-sion to Rathkeale College in the Wairarapa. Happy reading!

The Frank Hinchcliff Memorial Trophy competition was judged by John Boyd at our clubnight last Tuesday, 28 July. It was lovely to have John’s partner, Val, also join us for the memorable evening. Scott Stevenson introduced two of KCPS’s life members, Peg Griffin and Em Keall, and Peg’s daughter, Meg. After a very informative feedback and judging by John, Peg and Em presented the Trophy to the winner, Bernie Fraser, for his image, Mustafa of Tunis. Neil Gordon was Runner-up with his image, High Flyer. Thanks to all those who helped to make this evening the success it was, including all those who contributed towards the delectable supper! The image directly below is a copy of a photo taken at our club meeting on 25 May 1999, which was judging ‘Portraits’, and a special birthday celebration for Peg (aged 95 then) and Em (aged 90). Scott Stevenson supplied the copy (thank you, Scott), but we are not sure who took the photo.

Frank in the future

Frank Hinchcliff (1911-2004) was the first President and Pa-tron of our own club, the Kapiti Coast Photographic Society (then the Waikanae Camera Club). He was also a Foundation Member of the Photographic Society of New Zealand, and a Foundation and Life Member of the Nelson Photographic Soci-ety. The KCPS committee is investigating a complete change in the form and type of the Frank Hinchcliff Memorial Trophy. The intention is to launch it in 2011 as a national black and white competition.

We still have everything to do but will be progressively researching and defining the competi-tion over the next year and will keep members informed.

Once again, this month our club’s congratulations are extended to Shona Jaray and Neil Gordon who each had images, Sunrise on the waterfront and Ducks in a Row respectively, chosen by The Photographic Society of New Zealand for its New Zealand entry into the 4 Nations Competition. From 240 submitted images, PSNZ selected 100 images from 91 PSNZ members to make up its en-try. They aimed to select 100 images that would best represent the membership of PSNZ. The list of images that made up their entry can be found on the PSNZ website. The competition is between the PSNZ, the Australian Photographic Society, the Photographic Soci-ety of South Africa and the Canadian Association of Photographic Art. Entries have been sent to Great Britain where they will be judged by three members of the Judging Panel of the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain. The results will be returned to PSNZ near the end of August and shortly afterwards they will an-nounce which awards will be for : Winning Society; Highest scoring image (out of all 400 images submitted); and Runner up to the highest scoring image. There will also be a bronze Medal for each of the five highest scoring PSNZ images which will be presented at the 2010 Convention in Nelson. A DVD will also be shown at this convention. Good luck Shona and Neil!

Interclub Battle

Every year, one photography club in our region hosts the regional interclub battle. This year we have been invited by Kapiti Camera Club (in Porirua) to join them 18th August in a print battle. The Competitions Group is coordinating entries and every-one is welcome to both submit images and attend the Competition Group meetings to be part of the selection process. Organise your prints now and get them to Stephen Massey! There are a total of 10 themed rounds:

a) River and/or water b) Weather c) Cats and/or dogs d) Natural e) Illusion f) Wires and wood g) Friends h) Exposed i) Oops j) Yummy

The battle evening is a social get-together filled with friendly rivalry and KCPS needs your support whether or not you are submitting prints for the competition, so plan to be there! The secretary of the Kapiti Club needs to know numbers for catering pur-poses, so please let our secretary, John Rockell, know if you are planning to attend.

This group caters for those interested in capturing images on black and white film of different formats and darkroom techniques for processing and printing. The next meet-ing will be on Thursday 27th August at the home of Bill Harris, at 12 Kohekohe Road, Waikanae at 1930 (i.e.7.30pm).

Meeting Review

Our last meeting unfortunately became another victim of the weather. The Wellington contingent, which makes up half of our group, had to turn back at Paramata due to slips resulting in road blockages. Never mind - we still forged ahead and were joined by Neil Gordon from across the digital divide which ensured some interesting and lively discus-sion. We did go over some topics on our agenda which included different lens perspectives with print examples and the mixing of chemicals by percentage solution. We will have to revisit these topics and others on the agenda such as:

• A new film development regime to be presented by Brian Smith;

• Different size negatives at different focal lengths to be presented by Fred Wotton;

• Safelight test review with Herman Visser and Fred;

• Exposure adjustment between filter grades by Fred. Of course this is assuming the Southern contingent make it through for the next meet-ing.

Food for Thought

The following is an excerpt from an article by Andy Luck in Issue Number 100 of Black + White Photography magazine. Andy was on a photo trip to Venice when one of the cameras he was using, a digital compact, ceased to work and he became re-acquainted with his Olympus OM3 film camera which he had along as backup……..

“Indeed, it is when comparing the old film style of shooting to the DSLR in a situation like this when one almost questions progress. No

battery dependency, no chargers and trailing plugs to carry around,

no memory card issue, or portable storage or laptop to worry about

and no live view, histogram, face detection, programme modes, cus-

tom functions or AF to distract. Just you and your own judgement and

the sound of that precision clockwork whirring as you select the shut-

ter speed – joy!”

One could draw similar parallels between his trusty mechanical OM3 and the later elec-tronic auto everything film cameras as well.

Brian Smith at the opening of his exhibition, “A Shot in the Dark”

Exhibitions by Fellow Photographers

Brian Smith, a member of our Black and White group, has put together an exhibition of beautifully printed traditional fibre based, black and white landscape prints. Herman and I went along to the opening night of his exhibition called, “A Shot in the Dark”. There was a good turnout of other keen viewers which made for a successful evening. The exhibition can be viewed at Tactics, Level 1, 241 Thorndon Quay.

Tim Abbott, past member of our own club, has an exhibition, “Stolen Moments” currently on dis-play at Mahara Gallery, Waikanae, until 16th August. It comprises a collection of unposed portrait

style colour and black and white prints. Congratulations to both Tim and Brian on their efforts. Look, See, Compose, Capture and most of all Enjoy. Michael

What is the PPG?

This is a group of members who are inter-ested in digitally processing their images after they have been taken off the camera or scanner. The meetings are not digital cam-era sessions - they include topics also inter-esting to those who process film chemically and sometimes scan their image onto a digi-tal file. The meetings are typically divided into two parts to cater for both novice and experi-enced photographers - the first half hour is dedicated to learner skills, and then the fo-cus moves to more advanced techniques. Members are also encouraged to bring along prints for suggestions on how to improve them – not necessarily live on the computer but as part of a group discussion and assess-ment.

Post Processing Group – Ian Linning

As the saying goes "There's more than one way to skin a cat" and this appears to apply to selecting a method to convert your images to Black and White. Each has it's pros and cons, but is there an optimum approach? At our August 4th PPG meeting we will attempt to expose the pros and cons of the various methods, learn some new approaches, and reach a consensus decision on which method is best and why. Members are invited to air their views and bring along some examples of their preferred approach. To as-sist logistics could you please forward your example images to me by Sunday 2nd August, email address is [email protected] and I'll load into the laptop prior to the meeting.

Also please don't forget the "Restoration master" competition this month. Please bring along an image you would like to be restored on a thumb drive and we will select one to be used for the competition. Remember how it works, the image is distributed to those attending who have one month to use their skills and knowledge to restore the image. Bring your "repaired/restored image" to the next PPG meeting (Sept 1st) where the best result will be judged. The winner will then be asked to demonstrate the approach they adopted to produce the winning image. I suggest that we present the ap-proach demo at the following meeting (Oct 6th) to allow the winner to prepare the demo presentation.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Ian
