Benefits of Joining
We believe in togetherness and helping
one another. Our strength lies in the
support of our members and their well-
being. We strive on helping out the
needy members and their families.
The Institute of Chartered Accountants
of Sri Lanka - Members’ Benevolent
Society (MBS) was founded in 1983
owing to the untiring efforts of late Mr.
Dayalan S R Tharmaratnam.
The Society was formed on the founda-
tion of three objectives;
Creating a fund to help members and
their families who are in need of fi-
nancial and moral support
Promoting the general welfare of the
members and fellowship among the
membership
Create greater awareness amongst
members on a wide range of subjects
After an existence spanning over three
decades spattered with many ups and
downs and times of defunctness, the
MBS today stands strong and is humbly
proud of its achievements. The Society
extends a helping hand to members who
request for financial assistance and to
the families of deceased members whilst
also organizing many events over the
year for the benefit of its membership.
The Society’s strength lies in the strong
member base, the support provided by
the Institute and sponsors and the untir-
ing efforts of the volunteer executive
committee.
The Society and its committee is fo-
cused on strengthening its member-base
and creating greater awareness amongst
the younger members while also widen-
ing the assistance provided to the mem-
bers.

It is a great pleasure and privilege to present you
with our first newsletter for the year 2016.
The MBS Newsletter is prepared with the objec-
tive of keeping our members informed of the
events that have been carried out in the past few
months and to provide a sneak peek at the
events that are lined up for the next few months.
The President’s message will give you an insight
into the Society’s progress and its plans, while
the remaining sections will enlighten you on the
executive committee and its sub committees, the
benefits of joining the Society and our contact
details.
One of the main objectives of the Society is to
enhance the knowledge of our members, in areas
that are within and beyond our professional
scope. With this objective in mind we organize
regular guest lectures and events. Further to this,
we hope to include articles that would enrich the
knowledge and be of interest to our members in
the future editions of this newsletter. Therefore,
we would like to invite members to send in arti-

cles or suggestions on topics for future editions.
The MBS Newsletter is still at its infancy, and
your comments would be highly appreciated in
order for us to improve and publish an improved
newsletter in future.
The newsletter is a combined effort of the Ex-
ecutive Committee of the MBS, and let me take
this opportunity to thank them for the assistance
extended in publishing this.

stated that ―No one is useless in this world who
lightens the burdens of another‖. Therefore, let
us invite you to join with us to lend a helping

Greetings!
I am very happy to forward this message for
the first newsletter for the year 2016 of the
CA Sri Lanka Members’ Benevolent Society
(MBS). In 2015, I assumed the position as the
President of MBS with my strong commit-
ment to work for the MBS community. It is a
pleasure to give an overview of the progress
of the Society and some of the developments.
During the last four months, the Executive
Committee has been shaping the planned
activities for 2016 while also facilitating net-
working and fellowship events for the benefits
of its members. These include membership
development with special attention being
given to attracting young people, making the
society more visible to the overall member-
ship and ensuring the future sustainability of
the Society.
It was decided at the outset that the main
objectives of the Society were to foster fel-
lowship amongst the members and to assist
needy members. We worked tirelessly in
organizing activities during the period from
January to April 2016, and every effort was
made to ensure that our members were pro-
vided with the best service always. During
this period, we organized a series of pro-
grams for members with the aims of creating
greater awareness on health related issues,
facilitating a free medical camp and entertain-
ment, while also lending a helping hand to
some needy CA members through the provi-
sion of financial support for medical and other
requirements etc.
Guest lectures followed by dinner have be-
come a happy social occasion for MBS mem-
bers and they make it a point to attend such
events both for the expansion of their knowl-
edge as well as for the opportunity to net-
work.
The guest lecture conducted by Dr. M.R
Mubarak - MD, Consultant Cardiologist at
Lanka Hospitals, on ―Healthy Heart – Healthy
Life‖ was a well-attended, very informative
and interactive programme which provided an
opportunity for members to clarify any ques-
tions and doubts they had on this subject.
Normally a guest lecture time is limited to 45
minutes to an hour. However this lecture
took more than two hours due to the high
participation of the participants, especially
during the question and answer session.
Guest Lecture was followed by fellowship and
dinner for MBS members.
A free medical camp was organized in col-
laboration with Lanka Hospitals for the bene-
fit of all, not only MBS members but also all
CA members and CA staff. Over 200 indi-
viduals enjoyed the services provided at this
medical camp.
Sinhala & Tamil New Year Celebration was
organised for the 4th consecutive year, as the
main event organized by the Society. This
event was open for all CA members and their
families and CA staff and their families. We
organised many exciting events including
Kotta Pora, Singithi Avurudu Kumariya,
Singithi Avurudu Kumaraya and Elle Matches
for children and adults who enjoyed the
whole day. Fellowship and enjoyment of over
475 MBS members, CA Members, CA staff
and their families was heartening to witness. I
wish to state that we were able to obtain
sponsorships amounting to Rs. 1,115,000
which was a significant improvement on the
sponsorships received in 2015 of Rs. 797,500.
I wish to thank all our sponsors for their
generous sponsorships which helped us to
organise and host this event as a fully spon-
sored event where the event was entirely
free of charge for the CA members and their
families and CA Staff and their families. We
have recorded Rs. 281,689 as income over
expenditure from this event which would
help us organise many such events for the
benefit of MBS members during the year.
During the period under review, we have
assisted three needy members to meet their
medical requirements and other financial
difficulties.
We have planned to organize Guest Lectures,
a CSR project, a sports event and a Day Out-
ing for the entertainment of MBS members,
CA members and their families during the
later part of the year.
In addition, over the past 32 years our mem-
bership has grown significantly, with the high-
est number of new registrations for a year of
125 new members being recorded in 2015.
The membership now stands at 850 and I
wish to inform members that we have
planned to exceed the last year’s registrations
and recruit new members during 2016 as
well.
I take this opportunity to thank members for
placing confidence in me and electing me
uncontested for the second term to provide
leadership to the Society as the President. I
also wish to thank the Committee Members
of MBS for the support extended to me
which made the above events a reality.
I will conclude by taking this opportunity to
thank those who have contributed to the
success of our activities during this period
especially, Mr. Lasantha Wickremasinghe –
President, CA Sri Lanka, Mr. Jagath Perera -
Vice President, CA Sri Lanka and Mr. Aruna
Alwis – CEO, CA Sri Lanka.

It is necessary to help others, not only in our prayers, but in our daily lives. If we find we cannot help others, least we can do is to desist from harming them.

tion with Lanka Hospitals Corporation PLC, for
the benefit of all CA members and CA staff.

―Healthy Heart—Healthy Life‖ Guest Lecture
The Guest Lecture followed the Medical Camp and
was delivered by Dr. M R Mubarak, MBBS, MD—
Consultant Cardiologist—Lanka Hospitals.
The Guest Lecture was very informative and engag-
ing, with many questions being asked and clarifica-
tions being sought from the doctor.
The importance of maintaining a healthy heart was
emphasized by Dr. Mubarak along with the proce-
dures that would be carried out in the event of a
heart related ailment. The emphaisis that needs to
be placed on preventing heart ailments was ex-
plained in great detail and we believe this was of
immense help to the members in order to ensure
that heart ailments are kept at bay.
The Guest Lecture was followed by fellowship and
dinner for the MBS members.
