The award is to honor women who live within the state of Alabama and inspire others through their work and dedication to a stronger, more culturally aware commu- nity. Altogether only ten women were honored this special award. Dr. Xu was honored with this award for her promot- ing of Chinese language education and cultural awareness, and her outstanding contributions and performances in both CIT and the local communities in Alabama. The awarding dinner is also a part of Spotlight on China serial events host- ed by BIC. It is also its annual celebration of International Women’s day to award the women who have made econom- ic, political, and social achievements. Contestant Selected by CIT Won the 3 rd Place in Chinese Bridge Houston Preliminary Contest of Chinese Language On April 26 th , 2015, Contestant Afsaneh Faki, recommended by the Confucius Institute at Troy Universi- ty(CIT), won 3 rd place in the middle school students group, at the Chinese Bridge Houston Preliminary Contest of Chinese language held in Dallas. Xu honored with Alabama 2015 Motivating

Women Award

On May 5th, 2015, Birmingham—Dr. Iris Xu, director of

the Confucius Institute at Troy University (CIT), was

awarded as motivating women by Birmingham International

center (BIC). The award is to honor women who live within

the state of Alabama and inspire others through their work

and dedication to a stronger, more culturally aware commu-

nity. Altogether only ten women were honored this special

award. Dr. Xu was honored with this award for her promot-

ing of Chinese language education and cultural awareness,

in Chinese Bridge Houston Preliminary Contest of Chinese Language

On April 26th, 2015, Contestant Afsaneh Faki, recommended by the Confucius Institute at Troy Universi-

ty(CIT), won 3rd place in the middle school students group, at the Chinese Bridge Houston Preliminary

Contest of Chinese language held in Dallas. This is the 4th year CIT selects and coaches contestants to

participate in Chinese Bridge and all the selected contestants won the prize.

TheCIT attended Montgomery Cam-

pus Open House

On Apr. 29, CIT staff went to Montgomery to at-

tend Open House. Open House Day is an important

teaching promotion event for Troy University one

time every semester, which would have a direct

influence on students’ signing up for courses and

participating in campus activities. CIT takes this

great chance to demonstrate traditional Chinese

culture to the attendees in this event, and it was ef-

fective to popularize and promote CIT.

Charles Henderson Middle School Staff Visited the CIT

On April 22nd, Superintendent of the Troy City Schools, Dr. Lee Hicks and Principal of Charles Henderson

Middle School (CHMS), and Mr. Aaron Brown visited the Confucius Institute at Troy University (CIT)

and experienced Chinese culture with all the CHMS staff. CIT staff introduced CIT basic situation to

guests, and provided related guidance and support to help the Confucius Classroom at CHMS. At the end

of 2014 Hanban approved CHMS to establish a Confucius classroom. An agreement was signed with CIT

to establish another Confucius Classroom in Alabama .

The CIT Staff Attended Troy fest in Partnership with Johnson Arts Center

On April 25th and 26th, CIT staff was invited to attend 2015 Troy fest and give folk dance show and pre-

sent one of our popular folk arts, paper cutting, by Vicki Pritchett, the executive director of Johnson Arts

Center. Both the dance and paper cutting were very popular among the festival attendees. Troy fest, held

in honor of Jean Lake, is the premier fine art & craft festival for the central Alabama region. The week-

end long show draws upwards of 10,000 people to downtown Troy to celebrate the arts.

Chinese Culture and Language Workshop at Dothan Campus Kicked off

On April 28th, the 3rd Chinese Culture and Language Workshop at Dothan Campus, launched by the CIT

kicked off. 30 people from all walks of life around Wiregrass area attended the opening ceremony and the

lectures. The moderator, Dr. Iris Xu, Director of CIT, made the opening remarks and gave the attendees a

brief introduction to CIT. Then, the keynote speaker, Ying Springna Zhao, senior adviser of Sterne Agee,

gave a lecture feathering Chinese Oversea Investment. The following keynote speaker, Dr. Rui Feng, the

professor from College of Education, Troy University, delivered a speech on Cultures, East and west---

Historically and linguistically, which aroused the audiences’ great interests. It will end on May 21.

The CIT attended the Asian Pacific Islanders Heritage Month Kick-off Event

On May 1, The CIT was invited to attend the Asian Pacific Islanders Heritage Month Kick-off at the Ex-

change center, Fort Rucker. Decorated by Chinese paper cut, Chinese calligraphy, painting and Chinese

knot, CIT booth was the highlight of this event. Which attracted about 500 visitors. Also, CIT staff taught

the visitors on site Chinese paper cut and calligraphy. Especially the Chinese calligraphy themed Chinese

zodiac has attracted the attention of many children.

May 21 Closing Ceremony of the 3rd Chinese Language and Culture Workshop on Dothan Campus.

May 22 CIT will give performance at Asian-Pacific Islanders Heritage Month at Fort Rucker.

May 23 China Trip 2015 will set off.

The CIT Attended Camden School of Arts and Technology Festival

On May 8, CIT was invited to make a comeback and gave performance at Camden School of Art and

Technology. CIT prepared the calligraphy and paper-cutting for students and presented them a great Lion

Dance Show.
