Welcome to your Division 4 Newsletter. As your newly appointed Councillor for Division 4, I’m excited about bringing our community together through strong communication. Once our restrictions are lifted I will announce regular mobile office dates and times. This will give our community better access to me, your Councillor. Our new look Council has hit the ground running! We are currently reviewing the 20/21 budget for delivery in late June. I look forward to announcing what this means for Division 4 in my next edition. I understand that navigating through these unprecedented times has been challenging for all. Council has allocated several different types of Grants as part of an almost $20M stimulus package, offered rate assistance packages and we are currently working on bringing forward several projects to help stimulate our local economy with the aim of keeping locals employed. Buying local has never been as important as it is now! I’m proud to say that Council has passed a policy at a recent Council Meeting offering local businesses a heavier weighting during our tender process. We take buying local very seriously and ask that you do too! Until next time, stay safe. Warm Regards, Jodie. Story of Resilience Times are tough, but Moreton Bay is tougher. The COVID-19 global pandemic is having unprecedented impacts on the world. Despite this, the Moreton Bay community are uniting to foster a culture of resilience, perseverance, innovation and community-spirit to rise above these tough times and support one another. To highlight the inspiring stories and to cultivate the region’s community spirit, Moreton Bay Region Industry & Tourism (MBRIT) in partnership with Moreton Bay Regional Council and USC, supported by 16 business partners, have developed the Moreton Bay Tough campaign. Moreton Bay Regional Council is backing the tourism and events sector to help drive a post-coronavirus economic recovery. Tourism is worth more than $1 billion to Moreton Bay’s economy and drive tourism is the most important component of that. One of the most immediate and important ways of getting our local economy back on track is to boost tourism visitation into our region. Council’s partnership with Moreton Bay Region Industry and Tourism (MBRIT) will deliver a supercharged events program and new destination campaign, as social distancing restrictions are lifted. This includes a $240,000 destination campaign to support those businesses hit hardest by COVID-related closures, our local tourism, retail, and hospitality businesses. In recent months we’ve also seen the cancellation of many of South East Queensland’s favourite events including the upcoming Redcliffe Kite Festival. That’s why Council is working with MBRIT to supercharge our region’s major events program with $150,000 so they will be able to cater for an influx of residents and visitors, as soon as we can safely deliver these events. This includes events like Moreton Kids Festival at Strathpine, Australia Day at Bribie Island, The Hills Festival, Redcliffe Kite Fest and Lunar New Year at Caboolture. It will give SEQ families additional reasons to make Moreton Bay top of their travel lists - which is great news for local business. MBRIT will also be investing $50,000 to continue its free professional development for local businesses through its Business Moreton Bay Program. Find out more: www.mrbit.com.au

Moreton Bay Region Libraries have reopened with extended hours to give customers greater flexibility and find visitation times that suit them best. All library branches now have a special late night, and eight out of the ten locations are now open until 6pm on weeknights. That means an extra 47 hours a week that people can now access our wonderful libraries! Only 10 customers will be allowed at a time in a library for up to 15 minutes browsing for books or 30 minutes using the public computers. The Click and Collect service is back up and running where you can call ahead and arrange to collect your reservations or a mixed bag selected by library staff from outside the branch.

While it may be tempting to feed our beautiful native birds, please remember it can be harmful to the health of the animal and the environment. Wild animals depend on a balanced diet of natural food

they find themselves — not store-bought bird seed or bread. Unnatural feeding can cause malnutrition, spread disease and trigger aggressive behaviour. There are other ways to engage with local animals. Plant native species and install a

birdbath are better options for attracting wild birds to your garden. Native plants like grevillea, bottlebrush and banksia are excellent food sources for wild birds and are available at your local community nursery. Remember to change birdbath water regularly to avoid breeding mosquitoes. Find out more about wildlife at: mbrc.qld.gov.au/services/environment/native-wildlife

BBuusshhffiirree PPrreeppaarraattiioonnss Council will undertake planned burns in the coming months to help reduce fuel loads ahead of fire season. The aim of planned burns is to reduce ground fuel and lessen the impact of bushfires, reduce the threat to life and assets, while also protecting and enhancing the diversity and abundance of native plants and animals. Contractors have updated the stage (including native animal footprints and additional shade sail) and stairway to Osprey House Environmental Education Centre. Inside, upgrades have also been made to the thea-tre with a new interactive 75-inch monitor. Whilst the boardwalks are always open, we are working toward opening the centre from 15/6.

Have you spotted the upgraded red benches across our region?

Upgraded as part of Council`s Red Bench Program initiative to encourage Moreton Bay residents to speak out against domestic violence (DV), 12 benches were rolled out across the region in March. The red bench initiative is the brainchild of the Red Rose Foundation and CEO Betty Taylor says her mission is to end domestic violence related deaths in Australia. The benches aim to prompt people to start an uncomfortable conversation and reach out for help that could literally save lives.

Osprey House Update

Child Safety Improvements I recently met with the Principal of Mango Hill State Secondary College, Representatives from the P&C and also Minister Steven Miles to discuss safe travel to and from school for our children. As a result, Council is currently planning for the installation of new footpaths along Maryvale Road and Mallard Street, Mango Hill, as well as undertaking a ‘speed review’ along Kinsellas Road East.

Ten Point Action Plan

1. Reject the recommended 2% pay increase for councillors.

2. Immediately activate the Moreton Recovery Group to provide real time and expert external advice on the recovery challenge.

3. Deliver a second COVID-19 Stimulus Package to assist local businesses and residents.

4. A new Economic Development Strategy, finalised within the first 100 days.

5. Establish a Beneficial Enterprise to guide the use of council-owned land at The Mill within first 100 days, to start attracting business investors and help drive economic recovery.

6. Implement Neighbourhood Plans to ensure our Planning Scheme meets the expectations of locals.

7. Enact a Regional Growth Management Strategy to strategically sequence development at a pace our region can absorb.

8. Partner with Moreton Bay Industry and Tourism (MBRIT) to take our $1 billion tourism industry to the next level.

9. Help protect koalas by embarking on an Environmental Land Buy Back Program, so Council owns its own green corridors.

10. Finish implementing all the recommendations in the Council Reform Review to make Moreton Bay Regional Council a modern, outcomes-focussed workplace.

A new decade has certainly brought new challenges, but your new team at Moreton Bay Regional Council is already stepping up to the plate and taking coronavirus head on.

We’ve delivered nearly $20 million in economic stimulus projects targeted at keeping tradies on the tools, supporting ratepayers in financial distress and helping community clubs keep the lights on.

These are extraordinary times, so we’re taking extraordinary action. In fact, already this year we’ve provided more than 14 times the usual level of funding for community clubs to build new infrastructure and repair ailing clubhouses.

My commitment to you is that economic recovery will be at the heart of every strategic decision we make and community recovery will be at the heart of everything we do.

Certainly that’s my philosophy as we finalise Council’s 2020-21 Budget. We will focus every day on getting local families through the months ahead and making sure Council’s efforts reflect local expectations

On that note, I want to say that my door will always be open to anyone who has ideas on how we can do things differently here in the Moreton Bay Region.

I’m already inspired by those local businesses who’ve embraced the #MoretonBayTough mantra, by innovating and adapting day-by-day

to keep their doors open and keep one step ahead of this pandemic.

Council is doing what we can. We’re supporting the ‘buy local’ campaign by changing our tender processes to give stronger weighting to local contractors.

We’re keeping the bulk of our existing contracts, we’ve brought forward capital works to help keep locals employed and we’re also hiring new staff at Council to better serve our community - as recommended in the Grassroots Review.

But we’re not out of the woods yet, and as we slowly return to something that feels a little more like normality, I thank you for continuing to abide by the Government’s social distancing and hygiene regulations to prevent widespread outbreak of COVID-19.

Finally I’d like to congratulate all our councillors on the results of the March election. Residents have put their faith in a range of people with a range of views and professional experiences which will enrich our chamber.

I’m very pleased to have six returning Councillors bringing their experience back to the chamber, and six new Councillors bringing fresh ideas with them.

We may be living in uncertain times but voters have given us the foundations for success, and I know this new Council will deliver for you.
