Almighty God,

You are the Light of the world, Grant us your heavenly blessing. May the radiance of Your Light

illuminate our hearts and brighten our school

with the spirit of faith and love.

Let the Light of Your Presence guide us, for in Your Light we see light. Bless us also with Your Spirit,

that happiness and peace may ever abide in all men.

CCC News

The CCC team is committed this year to introducing the concept of Joy to the students and staff of St. Maria Goretti. Joy sounds like such a simple word, however it carries a lot of power. Through expressing daily gratitude we effect brain changes. Expressing gratitude daily produces what we have called to the students ‘happy juices’ in the brain.

This coming month we will continue to encourage the students to be more grateful thus creating Joy and a happy heart. Even the very search for something positive in our lives to be thankful for creates these ‘happy juices’. Expressing gratitude to others especially in a family creates a positive feedback loop in which each family member is more likely to reciprocate in being grateful for what the other family member brings to the relationship. Grateful family members stick together much more easily and much longer than those who do not express gratitude for the other. Some suggestions for the family might be to do some ‘brain curls’ like: 1. Start a daily family gratitude journal and record one, two or more things to be grateful for or people you

are praying for. 2. Remember to be grateful to your partner or loved ones close to you and say that to them every day. This teaches the family to build up their gratitude and they will be able to do gratefulness almost without realizing it and almost without out any effort. It works! Have a Blessed and Grateful Christmas, From the CCC Team Italian Classes for Parents

In past years, we have run an extremely successful series of Italian classes for interested parents of St. Maria Goretti students. These classes were designed to complement the program that students were studying in school. Course material was selected in order to assist parents in supporting their children in their acquisition of Italian. Mrs. Collins has agreed to offer these classes twice a month on Thursday evenings from 7:00-9:00 pm,

starting on January 12th, 2017. There will be a nominal fee charged for the classes.

If you are interested in participating please call the office at 403-500-2099. A registration form with Italian class dates will then be sent out to parents who sign up.

Christmas Sing-along On Thursday, December 22nd at 11:00 am, students will have the opportunity to join in on a carol sing-along in preparation for the Christmas break. Please feel free to drop by and sing with us!

Santa Lucia

The Santa Lucia legend is said to have originated in Syracuse on the island of Sicily. A young girl, about to be a bride, gave her entire dowry to the poor of her village and admitted that she had become a Christian. She was accused of witchcraft and burned at the stake on December 13, 304 A.D. Much later in history, the early Church made a saint out of her - Santa (Saint)

Lucia. Italian artists sometimes picture her as a blind girl holding a lamp. She is a patron saint for Italian fishermen and she is said to help guide them home through the rough seas during a storm. There are many legends about her and in each one Lucia stands as a symbol of light and hope to all mankind. Santa Lucia's coming begins the feasting, merriment, singing and the spirit of friendliness and goodwill that lasts all through the holidays. Santa Lucia is a traditional Neapolitan song. It was transcribed by Teodoro Cottrau (1827–1879). The original lyrics of "Santa Lucia" celebrate the picturesque waterfront district, Borgo Santa Lucia, in the Bay of Naples, in the invitation of a boatman to take a turn in his boat, to better enjoy the cool of the evening.

“Bookworms Know How”

We are happy to announce that we are continuing our reading incentive program, “Bookworms Know How” which rewards students for daily reading. Students who finish a prescribed amount of reading (depending on the grade level) are given a ballot. The ballots are collected in each classroom and at the end of the month a ballot is drawn. The lucky

student from each class will receive a gift certificate entitling them to $10 to purchase a book. Bookworm winners will be announced monthly at our CCC assemblies. Thank you to the DiMarzo Family for sponsoring this reading incentive program.

Too sick for school?

Recently we have had several students at school who are sick. Parents are asked to make alternate arrangements on the days when their child is too ill to attend school as this helps prevent the spread of viruses, thus reducing the risk of illness to classmates. Please ensure that

you call in student absences so that all students are accounted for. Thank you.

SchoolConnects Notification System

The district uses the automated call-out system ‘SchoolConnects’ to notify parents/guardians by phone if your child has an unexcused absence from class. To avoid receiving these attendance calls from SchoolConnects please call the school at 403-500-2099 before 8:30am to excuse your child from class.

Phone calls from SchoolConnects are made to all phone numbers provided by the parents in the morning and afternoon. Please make sure your contact phone numbers are up to date. Thank you.

Parking in Nirvana

Residents in the Nirvana section of Hawkwood have asked us to remind parents that it is a no stopping zone on the west side of the street by the walk way and that the zone stretches for a

Page 8: NEWSLETTER DECEMBER 2016...NEWSLETTER DECEMBER 2016 Dear Parents, We are now into the season of Advent, a time of waiting patiently and preparing our hearts for the birth of Christ

ways around a good section of the block. Please be aware that this area is being patrolled by the Calgary Parking Authority. School Patrols

When the temperature is colder than –18 degrees Celsius (including wind chill) there are no school patrols outside. Parents and students should take extra care crossing the streets at the designated crosswalks. School patrollers should still report for duty inside the school

where they will be utilized to assist staff in supervising younger students in the classrooms. Busing Issues

A reminder to parents -- If your child’s bus is late or there are other service problems, please contact First Student (bus) at 403-531-3900. They will have more up-to-date information on busing problems than the school. If you need general information or

have an inquiry about bus scheduling, please call the Calgary Catholic School District Transportation Department at 403-500-2458. Thank you! The Grade 4 Squeeze Team

As part of our grade 4 curriculum, Waste in Our World, the grade 4 students have made a very important commitment to the recycling program at St. Maria Goretti School. Even though it is not the most glorious job, it is very important to protect and preserve our environment. Our

grade 4 students are responsible for squeezing the excess liquid from the juice and milk boxes and placing them in a bin to be recycled. This makes the transport of the recyclables much cleaner and easier for our dedicated parent volunteers who deliver them to the bottle depot. Thank you Grade 4's!

Reading

Did you know that the biggest single indicator of academic success for students is whether or not they read and are read to? A regular routine of reading to your children before bed can be the most enjoyable part of your day. Students who witness their parents reading are more apt to read themselves. A commitment to reading pays off!

PROJECT WARMTH

SAINT MARIA GORETTI ADVENT SERVICE PROJECT 2016

Dear Parents,

This year Saint Maria Goretti School will be supporting and collecting items for Project Warmth Society of

Alberta for our Advent service project.

Most of us have never known, or even imagined, what it would be like to be homeless and without proper warm

shelter. Exposure to the cruel, harshness of the cold elements, is something that all of us hope and pray will

never happen to us or any of our family and friends. Homelessness does happen and affects hundreds and

even thousands of Albertans every year. Presently, with the economic down turn, we know many more

Albertans are in need.

The Project Warmth Society of Alberta is a registered charitable association that has been formed to assist the

homeless and the underprivileged. Blankets, gloves, scarves, parkas, boots and items of warm clothing are

gathered for distribution to those in need.

We are asking the students of our school to bring any new or clean gently used items listed below:

Winter Jackets,

Snow Pants

Hats

Mittens

Scarves

Fleece Jackets

Blankets

Hoodies

Jeans

Boots

Sweaters

Runners

These items can be of any age from infant to adult sizes. They are especially in need of adult (XXL or

XXXL) sizes.

All items will be collected and placed under our Christmas tree and in the front showcases which then will be

donated to the Project Warmth Society of Alberta. The Project Warmth Society has kindly offered to provide us

with boxes and they have made arrangements to pick up the donated items before the Christmas break.

This project is a great opportunity for our students to help those in need in our own Calgary community.

Students can bring in the warm items during the Advent season, November 28 to December 16, 2016.

Thank you in advance for all your help and have a wonderful blessed Christmas season.

Sincerely yours,

Saint Maria Goretti Staff

November 28, 2016 Dear Parents, Christmas Showcase is fast approaching, and we would like to share some information with you. The students are getting excited to perform! Christmas Showcase is a performance of Christmas repertoire that the students have been working on in Music class. Each grade level will sing/play all together. Junior & Senior Choirs will also be performing. There will be two performances, both on December 14th, and a dress rehearsal at 9:45 am. The afternoon performance will begin at 1:30 pm, and the evening performance will begin at 6:30 pm. Both performances will be the same and we invite parents to attend. Doors will open at 6:00 pm for the evening performance, and students are asked to arrive at that time.

If you are bringing grandparents or other family members we ask that you attend the afternoon performance as seating is limited. Tickets will be required for the evening performance, but are not required for the afternoon performance. Due to fire regulations the evening performance is reserved for parents only. Thank you for your cooperation. If you would like FREE tickets for

the evening performance, please fill in the form below and return to the school by Thursday, December 1st.

There is a dress rehearsal as well, which is only for students and AM Kindergarten families, on the morning of December 14th. This is the only performance the students will be watching -- they will remain in their classes until it is their turn to perform for the afternoon and evening. It is expected that the show will last 45 minutes to 1 hour. Due to limited seating capacity, we ask that you attend only one of the performances. There will be 300 seats available, however there will be standing room at the back and sides of the gym. Thank you in advance for your support of our Christmas Showcase! Sincerely, Mrs. Breen Mr. Macdonald Mrs. Rea-Gilmour Music Teacher Principal Vice-Principal ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CALGARY CATHOLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT MONTHLY NEWS

ConnectionsDECEMBER 2016

Board of Trustees’ Christmas MessageHis Holiness Pope Francis has been a wonderful role model to all of us living and learning in Catholic faith together. As he reflected on the close of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, he shared many insights about what it truly means to give and receive mercy. He said, “If every one of us, every day, does a work of mercy, there will be a revolution in the world!” Visit our website under News to read more.

Chief Superintendent’s Christmas MessageIt’s hard to believe we have already entered the Advent season and are preparing for Christmas! The school year has been moving quickly, due to how busy our district and schools have been. But no matter how busy we get, there are always opportunities to slow down and reflect. As you may know, the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy concluded on The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, on Sunday, November 20. As a district, we will continue on the road of exploring mercy with our faith theme for the school year, “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful” (Luke 6:36). Visit our website under News to read more.

Celebrating Faith Day & Shepherd Leadership Award Winners 2016Calgary Catholic staff members came together as a community at the TELUS Convention Centre on No-vember 1 to celebrate our annual Faith Day—an inspirational, faith-based professional development day. Field of Crosses ProjectThank you to our students who wrote 321 biographies on Southern Alberta soldiers who lost their lives in world conflicts. The biographies were affixed to the white crosses along Memorial Drive from November 1–11, as part of the Field of Crosses memorial project. In the coming years, we hope to have our students write biographies for all of the over 3000 soldiers represented.

School Nutrition Pilot ProgramWe are pleased to announce that St. Peter School and Holy Family School will take part in the Govern-ment of Alberta’s school nutrition pilot program. The program, which has been launched in 14 school boards across the province, provides funding so students can have healthy meals every school day, as well as learn about healthy eating and nutrition.
